Good Friday

Friday, March 25, 2016
Dropped by to see mom around 2:30.  Mom and Donna were having yogurt and banana in the cafeteria.  Soon, coffee and cake appeared.  They feed the clients well here.  Mom and Donna had hot turkey sandwiches with gravy for lunch.  They seem to have enjoyed that.
Because the sun was shining, I decided to take mom outside for a walk.  Donna said she would rest so that mom and I could spend some time together.  Mom objected to putting her winter coat on, but I didn't want her to get cold.  I couldn't remember the code to open the gate to go to the park so we just walked around the nursing home grounds.  Mom was anxious about getting lost.  We couldn't go back in the way we came, but I was able to the find another way in.  Mom was relieved to get back to her room.
I brought mom a baby orchid and a box of chocolates.
She loved the orchid and the box of chocolates.
She shared the chocolates with her roommates, Donna and Gerry.  She insisted they take 3 a piece.  All the ladies were happy.

Telephone

Sunday, February 28, 2016
Today, I dropped off the telephone.
It was so cute.  Donna and my mom were sitting in front of the fish tank with their feet up on Donna's walker.  The were both smiling and laughing at the fish.

Kitties

Saturday, February 27, 201
Dropped by with Ethel to bring in more clothes.  Mom and Donna were having a snack in the cafeteria.  They joined us in mom's room.  I brought a stuffed cat for mom and she was very happy.
Donna brought her big black and white stuffed cat and her stuffed tiger to show us.  I wish I could have taken a photo.  It was so cute.

Dinner with mom

Friday, February 26, 2016
Had dinner with mom.  Mom wouldn't eat until my dinner came.
We had "barbecued ribs."  It was actually ground pork shaped into ribs with bbq sauce.  A little salty, but not bad.  Mom ate it all.  She didn't have the cake for dessert, but she shared an orange with me.
There was a horse racing activity after dinner.  At first she didn't want to join, but she sat beside Donna and was soon waving goodbye to me.
At dinner we talked about Peter, the cat.  He is the resident cat.

Things are getting better

Thursday, February 25th, 2016
Mom  woke up a couple of times in the night and visited the nursing station.
She spent a lot of time with Donna, her roommate.
She was starting to take part in activities.

My friend and I visited around 8:00 p.m.
I was apprehensive, but mom was calm and happy to see us.
She let me hug her.
I was worried she would still be angry.
We went through her photobook with her.
She interacted with us and was alert.
We hugged when I left and she insisted that I saw good-bye to her roommate.
I felt relieved.

The Morning After

Wednesday, February 24, 2016
They told me that mom cried after I left yesterday.
She slept well during the night.
She ate breakfast and was walking with Donna, her roommate.
She was quiet.

Plan B

Tuesday, February 23, 2016

I got a call at 9:30 that mom would not be going to daycare.
I asked the support worker to tell my mom to put her coat and shoes on.
The support worker was successful in getting mom ready to go and even got her downstairs, but then mom bolted and went back to her room.
When I arrived at her place, mom was lying in bed.  She told me that she was very sick and would probably die.  I said that I would take her to the hospital.  She seemed fine with my response.

It looked like her hair wasn't washed so I washed her hair and gave her a bath.  She is supposed to get a bath on Mondays and Wednesdays, but it doesn't seem to happen often.  At the nursing home she would only be bathed once a week.

I couldn't pack her suitcase in front of her because she would suspect something was up.

When mom's friend arrived at 11:45 to pick me up, I told her there was a change in plans.  Mom hadn't gone to daycare this morning.  I asked her to take my mom to the restaurant and I would meet them in ten minutes.  I needed time to pack her bag.  We had  nice lunch.  After lunch, mom wanted to go to the washroom.  We went back to her suite.  She left to go to the car with her friend and I told them that I would follow after because I had to go to the washroom too.  I asked her friend to leave the trunk open for me so that I could put the suitcase in there when I came down a couple of minutes later.

We got to the nursing home and mom was fine.  No one was at reception and it took a while before we found someone to help us.  Finally we had someone to show us around.  The staff were very friendly and mom seemed at ease.

When mom realized that she would be staying, she freaked out.  All of a sudden she could speak English.  She even referred to me as her daughter.

She kept asking why she had to stay.
She kept asking to go home.
She felt betrayed.
She said she would rather die.

Everyone tried to reason with her, but to no avail.

The nurse was concerned and asked if mom would harm herself.  The nurse was wondering if she should call the doctor.

I tried to get her to join in on an activity with a little success.  Mom likes physical activity.
I was trying to get paperwork filled out.

Around 5:00 p.m. we looked at her photo album together and she seemed to calm down.
I asked if she was hungry and ready to eat and she was.  We went to find her place in the cafeteria.
She insisted that I share her food with her.  We both enjoyed her meal.  It was fried fish with tartar sauce, rice and carrots.  There was a fruit cake for dessert and an orange.

I had to make a run for it to catch a bus.  Mom wouldn't let me hug her good-bye.
