Boxing Day

Saturday, December 26, 2015
Mom is still complaining about not being told about going to Ethel's place for dinner.
Thankfully that did not prevent her from eating a good breakfast.
Mom helped dry breakfast dishes and did some vacuuming.
We did some exercises.  She said she felt a bit stiff and not herself with the floor exercises.
We watched "The Dog Whisperer" with Cesar Milan.
She's napping now.

Christmas dinner

Friday, December 25, 2015
It was a late night for both mom and me.
Mom thought she was going home to her place.
She wasn't happy about going to Ethel's for Christmas dinner.
She complained the whole time and didn't eat very much.
She hardly ate any of the turkey or ham so I was going to eat her leftovers, but she got mad at me.
She told me not to eat too much.
She wouldn't even eat the pumpkin pie.
I ended up eating her pie too.
I ate too much.
Thank heavens for bubble wrap to get us through the evening.

Mystery of the box of cookies

Thursday, December 24th, 2015

I had left a box of cookies for mom's volunteer visitor, but she never came.  Today I noticed the box was opened.  Mom said she didn't know anything about it.  Then, mom said the box was empty.  I checked and was shocked!  I checked the snack cupboard and some of the cookies were there so I put them in a container with a lid.  I wonder if she had given the other layer of cookies to someone.  I hope so or she must have eaten quite a few cookies.

Mom's developed quite the sweet tooth.
I noticed that she had already gotten into the package of shortbread cookies she had received from her daycare today.  She had only eaten two, but I suspect she had already plenty of sweets today.

Mom said she wasn't taking a bath.  Her feet smelt clean so I assume she had a bath last night.

Another evening of bubble wrap and Home Alone.  They play that movie a lot during the holidays.

Sunday 20 December 2015

Sunday, December 20, 2015

I'm a bad mom.  I'm keeping mom occupied with bubble wrap and television.  She really enjoys "Home Alone."  Interestingly, she didn't complain about watching "Cougar Town."

Yesterday she was quite contrary.  but today she seems quite content.  Although she ate all her meals, she said nothing tasted good except for the piece of chocolate I gave her and the peanut butter and honey toast.  We went to visit Uncle at the hospital after his hip replacement surgery.  Mom complained all the way there, but she was in good form.  We had to take a bus and transfer to a skytrain and then there was a bit of a hike to the hospital, but she did it all.  She had to climb a lot of stairs.

This morning we had banana pancakes and bacon.  She ate two pancakes and one slice of bacon with gusto.  She had two cups of tea sweetened with honey.  I always worry that she is getting dehydrated.
Her skin is still not good.  I've been applying Vaseline and coconut oil and it's getting better, but it still hasn't completely healed.

Close call.

Saturday, Dec. 12, 2015
There was an event at the Nikkei Centre today.  I went to forage for food, but they didn't have much.  I got some futomaki, inarisushi and some chicken teriyaki at the store.  I cut up the chicken into smaller pieces for mom.  She told me that the chicken smelt funny.  Sure enough, I caught a whiff of mold.  Good thing mom's sense of smell is still good.

Marriage

Sunday, November 29, 2015
Today mom asked me again whether or not I was married.  I told her that I was married, but now I was divorced.  Usually she ends there, but today she kept going.  She said I really should get married.  She asked me if there was anyone.  I told her that AH wasn't married.  She said he was a boy so it was okay for him not to be married, but I was a girl and should be married.  Mom expressed regret that I wasn't married and apologized to me.  She felt that she wasn't doing enough for me.

Friday, Nov. 27, 2015
Took half a day off work.  When I arrived at mom's place at 13:30 she wasn't there!  I guessed that she had gone for a walk.  Shortly after I arrived I got a call from mom's social worker.  Mom came home shortly after.  She had gone for a walk.  She was wearing a spring coat instead of a warm winter coat.  Although it was sunny outside it wasn't warm.
I decided to go ahead and wash her hair since I had to leave in an hour and a half and I didn't know how long the visit with the social worker would be.  The social worker arrived just as I had finished washing mom's hair, but I still had to blow dry.  The social worker talked to mom as I did her hair.  Masako was satisfied that mom was doing well.
I noticed that the bathtub was dirty so cleaned it.  I assume she had a bath this week.
I gave mom ice cream and bananas as a snack.  She was in a good mood.

Lost key

Monday, November 23, 2015

Someone called and left a message on my answering machine telling me that mom wanted me to phone her.  Mom had apparently gone over to a neighbour's place complaining that a robber had stolen everything and that she wanted her to call me.  (Mom can't used the telephone to call out.)  I called her as soon as I got home.
I figured out that mom had lost her key, but I couldn't verify it until I talked to AH who didn't arrive until 6:30 p.m.  As I thought, the key was not in the drawer where it was supposed to be.  I surmised that it must be in a coat pocket.  I told AH to look in the coat pockets.  I told him that it was probably in the pocket of a tan jacket with a high collar.  This jacket was like felt.  I told him this jacket could be in one of the closets or on her bed.  After about an hour and much arguing he found the jacket on the bed and the key.  Thank heavens!  If he didn't find the key, I would have had to go there.

E-mails were sent to the social worker from the activities coordinator and myself.

Mom didn't go to daycare on Thursday.  She said she was sick.  She did sound phlegmy.
Her nose doesn't seem particularly runny and she's not coughing.

On Friday, she seemed fine.  She had a good appetite.  I gave her a bath and washed her hair and that made her happy.

Saturday she was in a good mood until the bus came late and was very crowded.  We came back to my place for a bit and then went to meet friends at the restaurant.  It was very crowded and noisy and it took a long time for our table to be ready. Mom was upset so I took her back home.  I think she was tired and hungry.  I made her some cream of wheat with milk, butter and maple syrup.  I made her peanut butter toast with maple syrup.  I played Home Alone for her on the DVD player and she was happy.  I went back to restaurant and had appetizers.  Service was really slow.  I went back home again to check up on mom and she was fine watching the video.  I went back to the restaurant to finish my meal.

This morning she was in a good mood.  She slept a lot.  She had a good appetite.

Wednesday, November 11, 2015
Mom was in a good mood.
It was a beautiful day.
Mom told me that she had gone for a walk in the morning.
I made a kind of nikujaga domburi for lunch.
Mom liked it.
She was very tired after lunch and dishes and fell asleep on the couch.
Chris was supposed to do dinner.
I went shopping to Metrotown.
At 6:30 p.m. on my way home, I got a call from AH.  He had forgotten to make dinner for mom.  He said he had called her and she said she was fine.  I thought I'd better check in on her.
She was fine.  She had eaten the breakfast I had prepared for her for dinner.
I gave her some ice cream and some oranges for a snack and prepared another breakfast for her.
She was looking forward to going to New Vista in the morning.
She didn't think her hair looked good.  I told her that the helper was coming between 9:00 and 9:30 p.m. tonight and would help her wash her hair.

Peanut butter toast
Mom was in a good mood this morning.
I gave her a cup of warm milk when I arrived.
I made miso soup with wakame, tofu and green onions.
Cucumber and baby tomato salad. Chinese broccoli. Reheated deep fried squid in the frying pan. Leftover oyako domburi.
I washed mom's hair and picked out an outfit for tonight's dinner.
Gave mom a glass of water and vitamins.
It was pouring rain today.
Mom was upset that droplets were forming on her coat.
She thought her coat was old.  I told her that it was new, but she didn't believe me.
After grocery shopping we came back to my place and I made her peanut butter toast with butter and honey.  She looked at it and said it was too much.  I told her not to worry, because I would eat it.
After she had eaten two pieces, she noticed that I had already eaten 3 and was working on my 4th.  She told me that she would be able to eat it after all.  It made me laugh.  She said it was very good.  I told her that I would make it for her tomorrow too.

Sick and dying
This morning when I called mom she seemed fine, but then she started to get progressively negative.  When I told her that I was coming at dinner, she got upset.  She said she was expecting me earlier.  She said she was very sick and was probably going to die before I got there.  She said that I was very cold and didn't care.  Sigh...

Mom turned away the cleaning lady again.  Sigh...  She says she can do her own housework.

Mom really enjoyed her dinner with no complaints.
She ate really well.  We had oyako donburi, Chinese broccoli, baby tomatoes and candied tiny fish.

She said she didn't need a hair wash and she had already taken a bath yesterday.

I was preparing her a snack of mandarin oranges and warm milk, when she told me that I needn't spend so much time on her.  She said that it was dark and the weather was bad so I should hurry home.  She said that I had already missed one bus and that I should hurry.  This was true, but how did she know?  Is she just saying that?

Also, she said that I didn't have to worry about coming so early tomorrow.  What was that about?

Walking

The person who makes dinner for mom on Thursdays reported that mom was outside when she arrived.  Mom informed her that she had just come back from a walk.  May said that mom was not wearing a hat or gloves and appeared to be cold.

I got a call from St. Elizabeth.  Mom was not answering her buzzer.  When I called, she said she had been taking a bath.  I called a few minutes later and the support worker told me that everything was fine.

Sunday 1 November 2015

Sunday, November 1, 2015

Mom was in a good mood this morning.  We had toast, boiled egg, bacon and apple crisp with yogurt.
Mom slept most of the morning.  When she got up I had to play "Home Alone" to keep her occupied.  I made salmon sandwiches, soup and salad.  She liked everything.

At mom's place, I did the laundry, changed her sheets, vacuumed, did grocery shopping etc.
I made boiled pumpkin and gave her some for a snack.
I made miso soup with daikon, onion and wakame for tomorrow.
We had bow tie pasta with a meat sauce for dinner.  She told me she ate it everyday.  I think she says that when she doesn't really like something.  She ate all the salad and Chinese broccoli.
We had apple crisp and ice cream for dessert.  She really like it.

I told her that she would be staying home tomorrow.  Usually she is happy to have a rest, but today she said that she might like to go out.  I said that M. would come and make lunch for her.  She said that M. had gone away.  I brought out a photo of M.  Mom usually likes M.  Anyways mom seemed disappointed that she wasn't going to New Vista.

Bubble wrap.
Mom has been popping bubbles for over an hour now.
I asked her to stop several times because I was worried her fingers would get tired.
She has arthritis.
She assured me she was fine.
We'll see tomorrow.
She had butter chicken for dinner.  She didn't complain except that she thought she had too much food.  I told her that I would eat it.  Anyways she ate everything.
Took mom for her flu shot today.
She seems fine.
The pharmacist said that Vaseline was fine for rosacea.

Friday, October 30, 2015

Friday, October 30, 2015
Mom was very grouchy today at dinner.
She complained that she had to eat the same food everyday.
Of course this is impossible, but this is what she feels.
She also complained that people were stealing her things.
At least she enjoyed her bath and hair wash.
She still has that rash on her face.
I think it's rosacea.

Friday, October 23, 2015

Just called mom.  She said she was very sick.  She couldn't explain what was wrong, but she was sure that she was going to die.  She said she didn't have a very good breakfast.  I tried to reassure her.  I told her that someone would come and make lunch for her and that I would be there for dinner.  She was adamant that she would not last that long.

She had a good day yesterday.  She went to daycare.  Yay!  She had a nice dinner, although she couldn't remember any details.  She said she was ready to go to bed when I called her at 9:10 p.m.

Saturday, October 17, 2015
Mom seems to be in a pretty good mood.
She is still concerned that robbers came and took away all the gifts that her sisters brought;  even though, I showed her where I had put things away.
There was a fair at Nikkei so I was able to buy some chicken karaaage at Mogu.  It was delicious, but a little too oily and salty.
Mom helped with the dishes after lunch, but then she was tired and took a nap.
I took her to my place for dinner.
She helped to prepare the salad.
After dinner she helped to dry the dishes.
She helped chop up apples for an apple crisp.
I altered mom's new powder pink pajamas that I  bought at Costco.
We watched the Honeymooners as we ate apple crisp with ice cream.

Sunday, October 18, 2015
Mom woke up in a good mood.
We had pancakes and bacon for breakfast.  She had a good appetite.
After breakfast she said she felt tired and took a nap.
About an hour later when she awoke, she said she felt cold.
I gave her more blankets and gave her a cup of warm milk.
She took another nap.
At lunch we had leftovers:  butter chicken, green salad and boiled pumpkin.
She had a good appetite.
Mom didn't even help to dry the dishes after lunch.  We watched some animals at work episodes and then she took another nap.

Mom was very upset this morning when I called.
She said she was very ill and couldn't eat breakfast.
She said that all the gifts she received were gone.
I told her not to worry because I would find them when I went for dinner tonight.
She said that she might be dead by that time.

Cats

Sunday, October 11, 2015
We had an early lunch, because I had to get home and make stuff for the dinner.  I was busy so I turned on the television and had mom watch shows like the Brady Bunch, Gilligan's Island, I Love Lucy, etc. and mom seemed to enjoy them.  She enjoyed looking at old photographs as well, but then she became concerned about the dry patches on her skin.  I washed her face and applied face cream.
Mom was very tired and took a nap shortly after she got to my place.  I washed her hair.  She was confused about where she was going.
When we got to Frank and Sharon's mom sat on the couch with the cats.  She seemed very content.  Of course, she got covered in cat fur and had to be sticky taped when she left.
She enjoyed being with her sisters.  She ate a lot.  After her sisters left, she wanted to go home.  She played with the cats briefly and then wanted to go home again.
When we got back to my place, she didn't want to take a bath.

Monday, October 12, 2015

Monday, October 12, 2015

Mom woke up in a good mood.
I made cream of wheat and added canned fruit.
Cheese and sausage on crackers put in the microwave.
Mom chopped up apples for an apple crisp.
She became a little cranky and eventually laid down on the couch and fell asleep.
She was complaining about the rough patches on her face.  She wanted me to make an appointment to see the doctor.

I had to get her ready to go to her home because we were meeting her sisters and brother-in-law.

As soon as we got to the bus stop she started complaining that we had missed the bus.  Luckily the bus showed up shortly after.

She was angry that I had invited her sisters to her home.  She wanted them to come to my home.  I tried to explain that her sisters wanted to see her place.  Mom was worried that she had nothing to offer them.  I told her not to worry because we were going out for lunch.  Finally, I noticed a situation happening at the front of the bus.  Someone had walked on without paying the fare and the bus driver had called her out on it.  She apologized and the bus driver let it go.  I explained what was going on to my mom and she was affronted.  At least, that changed the topic.

Mom was very happy when her sisters came.  She was very happy with the gifts they brought.  She had a good appetite at lunch and didn't seem bored at all.  She refused to take a nap.  We had apple crisp and ice cream for dessert.

After her sisters left, mom tried on her new clothes again.  She seemed confused about where they had come from.  I explained that her sisters had given them to her.  She was excited about wearing her new clothes tomorrow to daycare.  Then she became concerned that she had no money.  I showed her all her hiding places and she apologized to me for being angry.  A few minutes later, she did the same thing again.

We had a good dinner.  Mom was really interested in the food gifts she received.  I told her not to eat them all at once.  She ate two candies and then I put the rest in the cupboard.

She asked me if I would wash her hair tonight, but I explained that someone was coming to give her a bath and wash her hair tonight.  She was not pleased, but then she seemed to forget.

After we had more apple crisp and yogurt together I left for home.  Mom accompanied me to the building entrance.

Saturday, October 10, 2015

Saturday, October 10, 2015
The agency called to say that because of the long weekend, they were having staffing issues and mom's breakfast service would be delayed.  I called mom to let her know and she said that she would prepare breakfast herself.  I told her that if she waited 15 minutes, someone would be there; however, breakfast was delayed a further half an hour.  When I called her at 9:15 she said she had just eaten and that the support worker had left.  She seemed in good spirits.

Friday 9 October 2015

Friday, October 9, 2015

Friday, October 9, 2015
Mom was in a good mood this morning.
She was relieved to see me when I arrived for dinner.
She said there was no food.
There was plenty of food.
I took her to Suzuya and we bought some tofu, Yakulto and canned fish.
We finished off the Singapore Noodles and the hamburgers that E. had made last night.
I made miso soup with wakame, onions and tofu and sunomono with cucumbers and wakame.
There was also some leftover kabocha that E. had made.
I gave mom a fruit cup for dessert.
She wanted a piece of chocolate that E. had given her.
I gave mom a bath and washed and dried her hair.
Mom's face is incredibly dry.  I wonder if she is putting toothpaste on her face thinking it is face cream.  Or maybe she is using hand soap and not washing it off properly.
I put Vaseline on her face.
Just before I left she told me that she had no money.
I showed her where she kept her stash.
We practiced turning the lamp off and on.

Thursday at daycare

Thursday, October 8, 2015

Took the day off from work to encourage mom to go to daycare.
She usually goes without any problem on Tuesdays, but for some reason, every Friday she refuses to go.  I am now trying Thursdays.  The daycare originally wanted mom to come on Thursdays because there was a Japanese-speaking woman there, but I refused because I had already hired someone to make lunch for mom on that day.  Well, that lady quit so now Thursday was fine and since mom wasn't going to go on Friday, I thought Thursday might work.  But mom still refused.  Even though I told her that she could have a new friend, she refused.

Mom was in a really good mood today.  She was ready to go to daycare when I arrived at 9:00 a.m.  She had her jacket and purse ready beside her on the couch. I felt like it hadn't been necessary for me to come.

At 9:15 a.m. she got a phone call from the driver.  I had gone to throw out the garbage and when I returned to mom's room, she was about to go out the door.  I explained that the driver was letting her know that he was coming, but it wasn't time yet to leave.

The support worker who was supposed to get my mom ready for daycare showed up at 9:30 a.m.  We chatted for a bit and then headed downstairs to the lobby to wait for the driver.  The support worker left at 9:45 a.m.  I waited with my mom until 10:00 a.m. and got worried so I phoned the daycare and was told that the rider was on the way.

When the driver arrived shortly after she explained that there was an accident and she was delayed.

The Japanese lady talked to me and mom didn't talk to her.  I relayed back to my mom what the Japanese woman said.  My mom remarked that J. had black hair.  Mom has white hair.  J. is 10 years younger and I suspect she colours her hair.

The participants had coffee or tea and a muffin.  Then, they prepared the tables for lunch: laid out cutlery, placemats, cups, etc.  Someone came around and gave each person a choice of beef stew or shrimp sandwich for lunch.  I picked shrimp sandwich and the lady said that mom usually chose the warm dish.

The participants went to another part of the room and sat in a circle.  The coordinator chatted with the group about family gatherings on the weekend.  Then, the exercise instructor showed up.  Mom was very serious about the exercise.  I thought it was a good time to make my escape.

At first mom was anxious and wanted to leave with me, but then she was fine.

I brought mom my old lamp.

I noticed that the Wednesday night support worker hadn't gained access to mom's suite.  That means that mom didn't have a bath or get her hair washed.  Also, she didn't get her meds.  Yikes!
I saw a notice posted on mom's door that there had been an intruder on the first floor and that all windows should be secured.

Lamp is broken

Tuesday, October 6, 2015
Mom had a nice time at daycare.
Was in a rush today.  Have to go to choir earlier for sectionals.
I bought Singapore Noodles for the first time in a long time.  Mom complained we always eat the same thing.  She ate a lot of Singapore Noodles.
Just before I was leaving she showed me that her lamp was broken.
I called my brother and he said that I could pick one up at London Drugs.

Sunday 4 October 2015

Sunday, October 4, 2015

Mom woke up a few times during the night to use the toilet.  She was able to turn on the light, etc.
Mom was already awake and dressed when I got up this morning.  She had already folded the bedding.  She was sitting on the couch.  She said she had a good sleep.
I gave her vitamin pills and a glass of water.
I tried serving her cream of wheat.  I tried the whole wheat cream of wheat yesterday morning, but I'm not sure if she would like it.  We tried the regular cream of wheat this morning.  It went really well with the apple crumble I made last night and kefir.  Mom liked it.
It has a lot of iron in it.
She's taking a nap now.
When mom woke up at 10:30, I got her to chop up cucumbers, daikon and orange pepper for sunomono.  She sliced onion for our tonkatsu don.  I gave her a glass of Ensure and milk as a snack.
She dried and put away the dishes from breakfast.  We folded laundry.  I got her do a little vacuuming.  We took the recycling downstairs to the basement.
Mom enjoyed lunch.  After I washed the dishes and she dried, she was ready for another nap. During lunch she asked me if I had ever been married.  I told her that I had been for a short time, but now I was divorced.  She asked me again and I repeated my answer.
We had to wait half an hour for a bus that is supposed to come every 12 minutes.  Luckily the weather was beautiful and mom was relatively calm.
I let mom look after a stir fry while I went to check on laundry.  I had the heat set relatively low.  I bumped into M.  He thinks he may have cancer.  He said he's going to the hospital for a CT scan tomorrow.  Then I bumped into another resident who asked me to explain how to use the new washer.  When I got back to mom's apartment, the food was burning.  Mom had put the heat up high.  I took the fry pan off the element and added water.  Luckily it was salvageable.  Poor mom.  She felt bad.
She folded laundry, but was facing challenges.  She didn't know where to put things back.  This happens with the dishes too.
Mom really enjoyed dinner and that made me feel good.  The pumpkin was especially delicious tonight.  I gave some to M. too.

Saturday 3 October 2015

Saturday, October 3, 2015

Mom enjoyed her breakfast this morning.
When I arrived, the main entrance to the building was open because someone was moving out.  It turned out to be the 90 year old Korean man that mom said was handsome.  She doesn't seem to be very interested in the move.
Mom had gone for a walk this morning.  Just by chance we arrived at the building at the same time.  We took the stairs to the 3rd floor because mom thought it would be faster.
I gave her yogurt with fruit for a snack.
She complained about not having clothes again.
M. came to make mom lunch today because I had a hair appointment in Vancouver.
When I came back, mom was anxious.  She thought that I had deserted her.  She had been washing underwear in the bathroom sink.
I told her that I would do the laundry tomorrow.
Anyways she was more docile and cooperative than she has been.
She insisted that we jaywalk.  I tried to resist, but she took me by the elbow and pulled me across the street.  I told her the story about how her old neighbour died because she was hit by a car.  Mom doesn't care.  She said everybody jaywalks.
She complained about the bus being late, but she was less accusatory towards me today.
Usually she blames me for the bus not coming.
Mom was kind of restless when we got back to my place.  She was touching things on the dining table.  She found some bubble wrap.  I showed her how to squish the bubbles.  She loved it.  It kept her occupied for a few minutes, so I could get things started for dinner.
I got her to slice apples and chop up carrots.
I made breaded, fried pork chops.  Mom ate it.  She ate a lot of boiled carrots too.
We had apple crumble with ice cream for dessert.
We are watching The Heat.  I can't believe mom is still awake.
She walked into my bedroom thinking she was at her place.
Mom wanted face cream so I put some on her face.  Her face seems pretty moist to me.

Friday, October 2, 2015

Mom said she needs new clothes.
She complained about having to eat the same thing everyday.
She ate well.
I gave her a bath and washed her hair.
She refused her bath on Wednesday.

Thursday, October 1, 2015

Mom did not go to adult daycare.
She said she didn't feel well.

Tuesday, September 29, 2015

Mom went to adult daycare today. Yay!
She said she didn't have a good time because there were too many people.
There was some kind of fair today.
I bought pork chowmein for dinner.  She said she had chowmein at the fair.
She complained about eating the same thing all the time.
She ate everything nevertheless.
She seemed quite energetic.  After we washed the dishes, we went for a walk around the block two times.

Sunday 27 September 2015

Sunday, September 27, 2015

Mom is being contrary today.
She woke up agreeable enough, but now she is grouchy.
Breakfast went well.  She ate well.
She wanted face cream.  I don't like to buy her face cream because she uses too much and gets pimples.  She's concerned that she doesn't look the same as before.
We went to see F. today to get some clothing altered.  Mom was complaining about her clothes.  She felt that her clothes were ill-fitting and not of good quality.
When we got back, we made an apple crumble.  Mom enjoyed chopping apples.  Then she took a rest.  When she woke up I gave her some blueberries and kefir, but she said she didn't like it.  Usually she likes this.  Then she wanted to know when lunch was because it was 12:00 p.m.  I was surprised she could tell time.
I told her that I would start lunch.  She was angry with me because lunch was not ready. She was restless so I thought I would try doing some physical activities, but she said she was tired.  Then, I cut her finger nails and toe nails and that seemed to calm her, but now she's fallen asleep.  I wonder if I will be able to wake her for lunch.
Mom ate lunch.  She didn't have a good appetite.  She's sleeping again.  She didn't want to help dry the dishes.
After lunch, mom slept until 3:30 p.m.  I had to wake her up.  She was cooperative.  We had to run for the bus.  Once we got to mom's place, she went to lie down again and didn't get up until 5:30 p.m.  She was in a much better mood.  She ate well and helped me dry the dishes.  I gave her the apple crumble for dessert and she loved it.

Saturday 26 September 2015

Friday, September 25, 2015

Friday, September 25, 2015
Mom didn't go to daycare today.  She seemed fine this morning when I called her at 8:30 a.m.
When I arrived later in the day she seemed relieved to see me.  She thought that I had gone away for a long time.  She had a good appetite for dinner.  She helped clear the table and dry the dishes.  She often forgets where to put away the dishes.
She often spills food on herself now.  I try to get her to eat over her dishes, but she prefers to sit back.  I think it's because she doesn't have enough fat on her bum.  I have to remember to put an apron on her when she eats and get her some kind of gel cushion seat.
After the dishes I gave her a bath.  I run the water, and then she gets in herself.  I cue her about which body parts to wash.  We start from her face and ears.  She loves it when I wash her back.  I just remembered I forgot to wash between her toes.
She complained about not having any clothes again.  She spreads clothes out on the bed.  It looks like a lot.  She found a pair of pants that need hemming.  I'll have to arrange to visit the alterationist.  Hopefully we will be able to do that this weekend.
She wanted to accompany me to the bus again, but I made her leave her keys in the drawer because I don't want her going outside the building.
I checked her blood test on-line.  Her iron is okay, but her RBC, hemoglobin and hematocrit are flagged as low.  I'll have to check on-line and see what I can do.

Mom won't let support worker in

Wednesday, September 23, 2015
Mom was fine this morning.
I got a call tonight around 9:30 p.m. from the agency saying that mom would not give access to the support worker.  I called mom and she just seemed confused.  When I called mom the second time, she said that the support worker had come and gone.  I phoned the agency to make sure that this had happened, but they haven't returned my call. 10:00 p.m.  The worker gained access.  What a relief!

Tuesday, Sept. 22

Tuesday, September 22, 2015
Mom went to New Vista today.  Hurray!
She had a nice time.
She was thinking that her hair didn't look so nice today.
I explained that the support worker had come last night, but that my mom had refused to take a bath and get her hair washed.  Mom said she didn't need any help.  She said she preferred to take her own bath and wash her hair herself.
Other than that mom seemed to be in good spirits.
I bought chicken chowmein for dinner.  She really enjoyed it.
She insisted on walking me to the curb.
When I tried to say good-bye at the front entrance she resisted.  She showed me her keys and insisted she would accompany me.  She waited on the curb until the bus left.

Mom refuses bath

Monday, September 21, 2015
The caretaker called to say that mom was refusing to take a bath.  When I  talked to mom, she told me that she was very sick and could not possibly take a bath.  I asked her if she would like to look nice for tomorrow when she went to New Vista to see her friends.  Mom was adamant she wouldn't take a bath.
I talked to the caretaker and she said sometimes my mom refused a bath and other times she was okay with it.  Mom never complained about Monday baths, but she complained about Wednesday baths.
The second time I talked to mom, I told her she didn't have to go to New Vista ever if she didn't want to.  Then, mom said that she might feel better tomorrow.  I'm hoping she will change her mind about the bath too.

Mom didn't remember about going to Gourmet Club with Minako.

Saturday 19 September 2015

Saturday

Saturday, September 19, 2015

Slept in this morning until 9:30 a.m.  I call mom every morning at 8:30 a.m.  I called her at 9:30 and she was fine.
Got to mom's around 10:40 a.m.  We had a light meal and then left at 11:15 for mom's hair appointment at 12:00.
After the hair appointment we walked up from 3rd Avenue to 4th Avenue.  Mom seemed interested in going to a restaurant.  I was surprised because it was a South American restaurant.  Anyways mom didn't really like the food except for the corn chips.  It was kind of salty.  We had a soup and a fish platter with beans, guacamole, salsa and rice.  Mom liked the soft tortillas too.
After we got back, mom was ready for a nap.
I did laundry and then stepped out to do some grocery shopping.  I decided to try a recipe that someone posted on Facebook.  I bought potatoes, mushrooms and Italian parsley.
When mom got up we had some apple pie that I bought from the coffee shop downstairs and ice cream.  My mom loved it.  Mom watched Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships on television.
I found a turtle neck sweater in my closet.  Mom liked it except the sleeves were too long, the body was too long and there was a mark left by a sticker that was on it.  I'll have to wash it and get it altered for her.  I tried to hem the sleeves, but she didn't like my sewing job.
We folded laundry together and then I started dinner.  I boiled the potatoes and fried the onion, garlic mushrooms and parsley in butter and oil. then seasoned with salt.  Once the filling was cooked, I fried up some hamburger which wasn't part of the recipe.  I mashed the potatoes and added butter, a raw egg and some flour.  I made a patty out of the potato mixture and added the filling of onion, garlic, mushrooms, parsley and hamburger.  The patty was too soft so I added a panko coating and fried it in oil.  They tasted okay.  Mom chopped up the cucumber and yellow pepper for the salad.
Mom only ate one patty.  She enjoyed the salad more.
After dinner mom looked at a photo album that I had made for her while I watched Jewel in the Crown.  After the show we went to buy milk and meat for tomorrow.  I forgot to buy a little milk to take back to mom's place.  I'll do that tomorrow when I look for a daikon.
When we got back I defrosted some blue berries and put some kefir on top, but mom said she was too full and refused to eat it.  She thinks she is too fat.
There was nothing on television suitable for her so I'm playing her favorite movie, "Home Alone," while I clean the kitchen and catch up on my e-mail.

Friday

Friday, September 18, 2015

Mom was all ready to go to New Vista today, but they didn't come and get her.
Apparently there was a misunderstanding.  They will come next Friday.  I'm thinking maybe we could try Thursday.  I'll have to ask Minako if she could make lunch for mom on Fridays instead.  Then, I have to contact St. Elizabeth and ask if I could have lunch back up for Thursdays.  Then, I could ask New Vista if mom could go on Thursdays instead.  Manjit said that there was a Japanese lady who came on Thursdays.  This might work.

Mom had spread a lot of clothes on her bed.  She kept telling me that she didn't have enough clothes.  I put some of the jackets in the closet.  She then said she needed to cover her neck.  I suggested some scarves.  I really don't understand what she wants.  She has tons of clothing.  I just said that I would buy her some clothes.  I found a fleecy that I gave her that zipped up high and she seemed happy with that.

Mom had a good appetite.  I gave her vitamins too.  We had a Japanese ice-cream sandwich.

I gave mom a bath.  She complained about the people who came to bathe her twice a week.  She mentioned a man.  I asked her about the man and then she said of course there is no man.  She loves it when I wash her back.  I asked her if the people who came to bathe her washed her back, but she said they didn't.

Mom insisted on accompanying me when I went to the bus stop.  She wanted to jaywalk.  I insisted we use the traffic light.  I mentioned that her neighbour was hit by a car and killed.  Mom insisted that she knew what she was doing.  She didn't even bring a jacket with her.  She insisted she was fine.  She was upset that the bus didn't come and of course it was because I was deficient in some way. I tried to persuade her to go back home.  Finally because she was cold, she gave in and I escorted her back to the light-controlled intersection and watched as she crossed the street.

Sunday 13 September 2015

Good appetite

Sunday, September 13th, 2015
Mom's been eating well.
She's worried she may be getting fat.
I told her she was healthy.
She had pancakes and ice cream for breakfast.  She's not eating bacon anymore.
Morning snack was a fruit cup with peaches and kefir.
Lunch was a rice ball with peas (mamegohan) and seaweed, a boiled egg and a cucumber, yellow pepper and tomato salad.  Dessert was a piece of chocolate.  Afternoon snack was Boost mixed with milk.
Dinner was gyoza, chicken drumstick, boiled pumpkin, miso soup (onions, garlic, daikon, wakame) and sliced fresh tomato.
Dessert was fresh Asian pear.

Thursday 10 September 2015

Busy day at the hospital

Thursday, September 10, 2015

Metrotown bus loop has changed and now the 129 only stops at Patterson. Good thing I checked.
Spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to go by transit and figuring out where the bays are.  I can't be running around looking for bay numbers with mom. I have to know where the bays are so I can get there expeditiously. Anyways we had good connections both ways so mom wasn't too upset.

I even considered Handydart.  I spent a lot of time trying to get through.  Then, I was told that only standby was available and I would have to call again.  The bus is actually faster because with handydart you have to wait for half an hour and then you have to make detours along the way.

First we got a blood test for mom.  I went to the information booth and they told us how to get to the lab.  There was only one person ahead of mom.  Then, I asked how to get to 4R.  That's where Tomi is.  Tomi seemed to recognize us and seemed happy to see us.  She is very thin and frail.  It's no wonder she broke her hip when she fell.

Then we went to see Mits.  He seemed fine.  He said he'd been in the hospital for 20 days.  They did a biopsy this morning. He said he had water on his lungs and he was hooked up to machine to drain the water.  He said he went to the hospital because he felt so tired.  They sent him home, but then he ended up back in the hospital because he couldn't breathe.  I didn't know he worked for a flower shop.  He complained about the tasteless food.  He seemed in good spirits.

Then we went to Tim Horton's.  I got mom a bottle of juice.  She complained because it was too big, but I said she could finish it tomorrow.  She said we should have split the juice and I shouldn't be drinking tea.  She ate half the banana muffin.  She enjoyed it.

We met with the psychiatrist.  Mom recognized him.  She said she doesn't like him.  She says he always makes her wait.  She wondered why she had to see him since he couldn't do anything anyways.

Mom was nervous, but she performed well.  She answered questions well.  She even remembered that I was her daughter, even though she couldn't remember my name.

Mom's risperidone will be gradually reduced to nothing in about a month's time.  I hope she doesn't get too out of hand.

We made it back to mom's in good time.  I had her lie down for a nap.

I woke her up when I was leaving and she was very upset.  She said she would die if I left.  I explained that Elina would be coming shortly to make dinner for her.  Finally, she relented and I was able to leave.

Clothes

Tuesday, September 8, 2015
Mom went to daycare today without incident. Hurray!
However, she said that she didn't have a good time.
She says that it's just not the same.
She says that there are fewer people.
She thinks the end is coming.
I said it was important to support her friends.
They were kind to her.
When I got to mom's place she had thrown a whole bunch of clothes from the closet on the bed.
I had to spend some time putting things away.
There was a nice winter coat that she said she didn't want because it was too heavy.
Mom had a good appetite.
We went for a walk twice around the block.
She never complained about her feet.
I bought two pairs of shoes yesterday for her to try on.  One in size 5 and another in size 5.5.  I have six months to return them.
Mom was supposed to have the nurse come and visit her to take her blood at 6:30 a.m. tomorrow morning; however, she has to be able to say her name and date of birth which she can't.  Gosh, darn!
I'll try and get it done this week I guess.

Memory problems

Sunday, September 6, 2015
When I arrived at mom's place at 10:3 a.m. the dishes were done.  The dish water was still warm.
Mom said she had washed the dishes last night.  I told her that I would do them in the morning.  The dishes looked clean except for one plate that was a little greasy.

Monday, September 7, 2015
My brother called me in alarm.  Mom thought I was gone.  He wanted me to talk to mom to let her know that I was still alive.
Mom was also concerned about rice and having money.  My brother said he had to show her her wallet and money twice.
I told him to put rice in the container under the sink.  Someone probably mentioned to mom that it was getting low and she was worried that she would have to go out and buy rice.

Saturday 5 September 2015

Matsuri Talent Search

Saturday, September 5, 2015

I was surprised mom was willing to come with me as she had been complaining her shoes were too tight and her feet hurt.

We finished dinner quickly and I left a messy kitchen.

Our relatives were there and so were mom's friends.  Mom was very happy to sit with her old friends.  I was surprised she stayed for the whole concert.

She said she was very tired after she got home.  She said her bum hurt.

I cleaned off the counters, put the dirty dishes in the sink, etc.  I told her that I would wash the dishes tomorrow.  I hope she doesn't forget.

She was in a good mood.

Nails

Saturday, September 5, 2015

I have to cut mom's finger and toe nails.  I don't know when this started happening.  I remember she asked me about nail clippers and I found a a toe nail clipper and a finger nail clipper.  But then, she didn't use them.  She used scissors to cut her nails.

I try to remember to check mom's nails.  Her nails don't seem to grow so fast anymore.

Her toe nails are quite brittle.

Took mom for a pedicure on a whim.  It was the same day she got her hair done, August 1, 2015.
She said she was very tired and didn't want to go, but I had already made the appointment earlier in the day so I had to be persistent.  Luckily she finally cooperated.

The girl spent about 45 minutes on my mom's feet and toes.  They looked great.  It's been over a month now and they still look great.

Bathing

Friday, September 4, 2015

Gave mom a bath last night.  I don't even remember now when I started having to do this.  A month ago?  Anyways after I talked to the new case manager she said we could have a support worker give mom a bath and wash her hair on Mondays and Wednesdays.  I'm so grateful.

I have to tell mom which parts of her body to wash.  We start with her face.  I encourage her to use the wash cloth.  Then, we do her ears.  I point out my ears and then behind the ears.  Then, I put soap on the wash cloth and I tell her to wash her neck, chest, underarms, stomach, private parts, legs, feet, etc.  I make sure to wash between her toes.

Sometimes she likes to lay back in the water, but sometimes she can't seem to get into a comfortable position and she says her head hurts.

She loves it when I wash her back.

She uses the wash cloth to dry her body and then I use a hand towel to help her dry her back.  She dries herself.

I lay out her underpants and undershirt.

Wednesday, September 9, 2015
I just called mom.  She said she was just about to jump into the bath.
Yikes!  Someone is coming to give her a bath and wash her hair.
I called St. Elizabeth and warned them about mom.  Maybe they can just wash her hair.

Shoes

Friday, September 4, 2015

Mom said all her shoes are too tight.
I don't understand.
We went to the doctor's yesterday and she never complained about her feet.
Now, all of a sudden, all her shoes are too tight.
Maybe this is why she didn't want to go to adult daycare.
I traced her foot, but I don't know if that will help me find shoes for her.

Saturday, September 5, 2015

Today I tried cutting her toenails.  It seemed to help a bit, but she is still complaining about her feet when she wears shoes.

Anyways she went out for lunch with me at Hi Genki and she went to the Matsuri Talent Search.

Thursday, September 10, 2015
I bought shoes for mom last Monday and brought them today.  She tried them on and said they were fine.  She also tried her other shoes on and said they were fine.  Maybe I didn't have to buy new shoes.

Sunday, September 13th, 2015
I'm taking the size 5s back to the store and mom is keeping the size 5.5s.
she does look like she had some foot trauma in her nail bed.  It's red. Maybe she stubbed some toes.  She says she doesn't have any pain when I squish her toes.

New Vista - Friday

Friday, September 4, 2015

Mom didn't go to New Vista today.
I don't understand.
She was so excited about going yesterday.
Today she said she was too ill to go.
I have lunch support arranged with St. Elizabeth so that if mom doesn't go to daycare she still gets lunch.
Very disappointed.

Monday 31 August 2015

Worrying about the time

Monday, August 31, 2015
I told mom that she was going to New Vista tomorrow.
She kept asking what time people were going to come.
I told her that the breakfast lady always came at 8:00 a.m.
She told me that was too early.
I said another lady would come and help her get ready to go at 9:15 and take her downstairs to wait at 9:30.  The New Vista van would pick her up at 9:45.
She kept asking me over and over.
I told her that she didn't have to remember anything because someone would come and help her.
I told her she had nothing to worry about.
I made her do a lot of exercise to shift her attention.

She wondered why she had to go to New Vista.
I explained that she had friends there and they did fun things.
I said that if she didn't go, her friends would miss her.

We picked out her clothes for tomorrow.  She told me several times that she had no clothes.  Each time I took her to bedroom and showed her the outfit that I had picked out for her.

Hair

Friday, August 28, 2015
Mom was upset about the way the support worker had done her hair on Wednesday.
She had feathered it on the sides.
I washed mom's hair and blew it dry into a bob the way she liked.

Monday, August 31, 2015
I told mom that someone was going to give her a bath and wash her hair tonight.
Mom was still upset about the person who had done her hair on Wednesday.
I told her that it was okay because someone else was going to do her hair.

Spider

Monday, August 31, 2015
We were in the stairwell and I saw a huge spider on the wall just above the steps.  It must have been 2 inches including the legs.  Yikes!  I sidled up the stairs and motioned mom to follow.  She hesitated.  Then she told me that she was going to kill the spider.  She raised her foot as if to step on it.  I told her to hurry and come.  She kept saying that she could stomp on it.  By the time we got up to the 3rd floor, she had forgotten about it.

Saturday 29 August 2015

Mom won't come to my house

Saturday, August 29, 2015
Mom won't come to my house.
She says she feels sick.
She seems fine to me.
Anyways it was just as well.
The transit system was a mess.
Went to visit my uncle this afternoon and had planned to take mom with me.
Bus was packed and on the way back my cousin had to give me a ride because the buses were full.
After dinner mom still wouldn't come home with me.
I left later than usual because I had to give her her medication.
The buses were still not running on time.  Mom would have had a fit if she had been waiting with me.

Saturday, September 12th, 2015
Mom didn't want to come home with me.
She said she was sick.
I let her take a nap.
After she woke up she was good to go.

Monday 24 August 2015

News

Thursday, August 20, 2015
Met with the new case manager.  She said that mom met the criteria to go to residential care.  They will place her in the first appropriate bed.  This could be two weeks from now or six months from now.  We have to decide within 24 hours and mom has to move in within 48 hours.  Stress.

Friday 3 July 2015

Bad evening

Thursday, July 2, 2015
I don't like to call mom in the evening.  It reminds me of all the times when my mom insisted she had to go to emergency.
Last night when I called her she told me that she wanted to die because it was so hot.
She always sounds so dramatic.
I talked her down.  I told her to drink some water, get a cold towel and wipe her face and body and maybe take a bath.  She didn't understand at first, but finally she calmed down.  But this makes me feel very anxious.
In the morning when I called her she was in a good mood and I felt relieved.

Saturday, August 15, 2015
Mom said she had to go to Emergency.  She said had to see a doctor immediately.  I asked her if she had any pain.  She said that she didn't.  I explained that her body was fine, but her mind was not.  A few minutes later she was fine.

Wednesday 3 June 2015

Phone is off the hook

Tuesday, June 9, 2015

Mom had the phone off the hook again.  Luckily I had talked to MG and he so kindly knocked on my mom's door and put the phone back on the hook.  Mom could have missed going to New Vista.

Wednesday, June 3, 2015

I tried to phone mom to cue her that Keiko was coming to visit her; however, the line was busy so I couldn't get through.  I tried several times during the day, but the line was busy.  I called AH, but he said he had to work overtime.  I called mom's neighbour, but she didn't pick up.  Reluctantly I went to mom's place after work.  I've seen her everyday since Friday and I wanted time off.  I arrived shortly after 5 p.m.  I could smell something burning.  Mom had burnt a pot trying to heat up miso soup.
I found the phone on the coffee table.  She had forgotten to return it to the charger.  Everything was okay.  I  was so stressed.  Yesterday I had mild chest pains.

Monday 1 June 2015

Mom doesn't know my name

Saturday, September 27, 2014
9:00 p.m.
I gave my mom her pills (Remeron and Risperidone) half and hour ago.  We are doing some stretching exercises.  Suddenly mom turns to me and says she can’t remember my name.  She says she wants to die.  She feels bad that she doesn’t remember things.

Sunday, September 28, 2014
7:00 a.m.
Mom doesn’t remember how to eat a soft-boiled egg.  I cracked it in half for her and gave her a spoon, but she tried to peel it.  I showed her how to use the spoon to scoop the egg out.

Mom’s forgotten how to wash the dishes.  She forgets which dishes she’s washed and which she has to rinse.

She forgets which dishes she’s washed and which dishes are washed  dried and ready to be put away.

This morning at breakfast she told me she knows she has memory problems.  She “knows” it’s not Alzheimer’s because she is aware she has memory problems.

Doing some cleaning in my enclosed balcony.  Moved some plants.  Discovered water spilled on some boxes.  I had asked mom to water some plants yesterday.

Tuesday, June 30, 2015
I was taking a walk with mom outside in the evening around 7:00 p.m.
Suddenly mom said that she knew I was a relative and asked if I could possibly be her sister.  I told her that I was her daughter and she laughed.

Schedule mix-up

Saturday, May 30, 2015
No one came to look after mom for lunch.
The person who was supposed to come had got her schedule mixed up.
Mom was fine.
Usually she does breakfast by herself and I come and do lunch for her, but I had a choir gig.
When I called her in the morning, she couldn't find the rice.
She had miso soup and ate oranges.
She was relieved to see me when I arrived around 4:00 p.m.

Wednesday, August 5, 2015
Yuki didn't make lunch for my mom on Thursdays last month because she said she needed to do exercises for her back.  She said she was coming back in August.  She said she couldn't do Thursday lunches because she had to tend to her cat, but that she could do Thursday dinners.  I contacted Elina to see if she was willing to do lunches instead of dinners and she said it was fine.  Then, Yuki said she couldn't do lunches either.  So I had to scramble to find someone to do lunch this Thursday.
I even called Charlene.  Anyways Gina said she would arrange to have lunch delivered to my mom and I could pay her back.  Next week Thursday is covered because Yuki told me in advance that she wouldn't be able to do Thursday, August 13th.  Elina will be back from holidays by then and hopefully something will be worked out.  I've hired Hiroko to come in on Fridays to help mom with lunch and do some light housekeeping.

Sunday 17 May 2015

Accidents

Sunday, May 17, 2015
Lately, mom has little "accidents."
Usually it is a wet fart and she has a stain on her underwear that needs to be washed.
This morning she said she couldn't remember where the toilet was and she had an accident.
It happened in the washroom.  She got to the right room, but then got confused about where to sit and while she was trying to figure this out, she had an accident.

Sunday, June 21, 2015
This morning I asked mom to change her underpants.
She showed me that her pants were soiled.
There was some poop on her pants.
I put the soiled pants in the sink and ran cold water.
I got some moist bum wipes and gave them to mom to wipe her bum.
I was surprised that I didn't smell anything.
I wonder if my sense of smell is going.

Saturday, August 8, 2015
I found a wet nightie and undershirt in mom's bathroom.
I wonder if she had soiled them and then tried to clean them.

Sunday, August 16, 2015
Mom woke up several times in the night to go to the washroom.
Yesterday afternoon she thought the washroom was in my bedroom so I was kind of worried, but everything was fine.

Sunday, August 23, 2015
When I went to take a bath, I saw some stains in my bathtub that smelt like pee.
I wonder if mom peed in the bath tub?

Friday 15 May 2015

Exercise

Friday, May 15, 2015
Mom goes for walks.
Today after lunch, I asked her take to the garbage out while I was doing the dishes.
She was gone for about 20 minutes.
She told me that she decided to go for a walk around the block.
That's great, but I was a little worried.  Sometimes she runs into someone downstairs and chats.

Wednesday, May 20, 2015, 7:45 p.m.
Just called mom.  She said she had just come back from her walk. Yikes!  I told her it was a good thing she didn't get lost and she giggled.  She seems to be in good spirits.

Sunday, June 14, 2015.
Mom and I went for a walk.  Mom walked around the block and then stopped before we got her building.  She said she was tired so I thought she would continue home, but she looped back around again.

Tuesday, August 4, 2015
Mom and I went for a walk after dinner.  We took the stairs down and took the stairs up.  Mom can go up the stairs faster than me.

Saturday, August 15, 2015
Mom seems quite stiff lately and complains about pain in your lower back.
I think it's because she sits and falls asleep.
I try to get her to lie down.
I try and get her to do exercise.
When we first start our exercise she says she feels pain, but soon she says she feels fine.
Then, she says she is tired and lies down.

Monday, August 24, 2015
I called mom at 7:30 p.m. to tell her that she was going to New Vista tomorrow.  She said that she had just gotten back from a walk.  She seemed out of breath.  I hope she remembers to put her key back.

Monday, August 31, 2015
I'm doing exercises with mom.
She says her fingers are stiff.
She's still in pretty good shape.
I think I get just as tired from the workout as she does.
In fact, she kicks her leg higher than I do.

Sunday, September 13th, 2015
Mom enjoys her finger exercises.
I do "rain" and "pachi-pachi" (blinking lights).
She doesn't like to crouch down or go onto the floor, but once she's there, she is fine.

Sunday 10 May 2015

My brother

I feel like I am doing so much and he is doing so little.
I am grateful that he has dinner with mom twice a week.  He usually buys take out.
But...I have dinner with mom twice a week and I have her on the weekends.  I usually cook something.
I do most of the doctor's appointments as in he does maybe twice a year and I do all the rest.  I do all the hair appointments.
I do most of the grocery shopping as in 99%.
I do all her laundry, clean her bathroom, etc.
I even wash her hair and cut her nails.
I write all the cheques.
I do all the banking.
I found all our part-time help.  I placed ads, I made phone calls, I interviewed.
If he goes on vacation, I make sure that someone is there to cover for him.  When I go on vacation, I make sure that everything is looked after.
This time when he springs on me that he will be away the May long weekend and miss his turn, I suggest he find someone to cover for him.  I even give him a list of possibilities.  What does he say?  Mom will be fine.  Asshole!

So he finally calls someone on the list and gets lucky the first time.  He actually found someone to make lunch for mom on the long weekend.  It was so easy for him.  Usually I can't find anyone so I have to cover.

Since it was the AH's birthday I treated him to dinner and also mom because it was Mother's Day.  He didn't even acknowledge Mother's Day.  We went back to mom's place for cake.  He just sat there like a bump on a log, while I did all the preparations and clean up.  Not just because it was his birthday, but like always.

Monday, May 25, 2015
Called AH to confirm for this Sunday.  He said that I could drop mom off at his place if I had an errand downtown.  I sent him an e-mail, but I wanted to confirm.  He wants me to use text.  Heck, I don't even know how to check my voice mail.  I don't understand why he can't use e-mail.
Anyways he told me that he was making rice for tomorrow.  That was great!
But then he got really upset when I said I would drop mom off around 10:00 a.m. and pick her up at 4:00 p.m.  He brought up stuff from 30 years ago!  I don't even understand how I got sucked into apologizing for something I did 30 years ago.  I ruined his life because I called him a lazy, weightlifting bum or something like that.  He said that he had taken mom and dad to the hospital many times and where was I.  I don't remember.  I remember that mom called the ambulance regularly.  I remember going to the hospital with mom many times by taxi and staying most of the night and having to go to work the next day.  I remember seeing a lot of specialists with mom.  I don't remember too much about AH.
Anyhow, I can drop mom off from 10:00 and pick her up at 2:00.

Saturday, May 30, 2015
AH told me that everywhere was 5 minutes from his place.
I looked up the skytrain station that I thought was closest to him and it was 15 minutes.
He said he came from Granville.
I checked that station and it was 11.  That's doable.

Sunday, May 31, 2015
We made it to my brother's without incident.
Mom was fine.  She was excited to go to my brother's place although she thought it was far.
My brother had laundry ready for us to fold when we arrived.
I came back at 2:00 to collect mom.
She was fine.

Tuesday, August 18, 2015
I get a call from AH at work.  He wants to know the name of the Chinese restaurant across the street from mom's.  I tell him I'll give him the number and that was it.  The last time, he made me call and order the food.  Last time, I had to order and my phone died so I had to borrow one.

Sleeping

Weekend, May 2nd and 3rd, 2015

Mom slept a lot.  She seems pretty dopey.
Saturday we went for dinner at Paradise Sushi.  She used to like this restaurant and sometimes went there for lunch by herself after a doctor's appointment.
She asked me why I didn't take her to a nicer restaurant.
I washed her hair Sunday morning and it made her happy.

Sunday, June 21st, 2015
Mom is sleeping a lot this morning.
I believe her risperadone has been reduced and her aricept has been increased.
We had dinner with NS on  Friday and mom seemed alert.
When I ordered koroke teishoku, which is her favourite dish, she complained that she ate the same thing all the time.  She ate it all except for some rice.  She told me that I was a messy eater.

Sunday, August 16, 2015
Mom is sleeping a lot again.

Sunday, September 13, 2015
Mom is sleeping a lot.
She seems to be more with it when she wakes up and in a better mood, but I have to keep her occupied.

Charlene's birthday dinner

Saturday, April 25, 2015
When I arrived at mom's in the early afternoon she announced that she wasn't feeling well.
I just made her a snack and after she ate it, she was ready to come with me.
She wondered if it was far away.
We took a bus, a skytrain and another bus and then walked.  It took us about 40 minutes.
Mom was fine.  She wanted to go home shortly after dinner, but I said we had to stay for cake.  We went home around 8:00.
That night, for the first night in a long time at my place, she said she would take a bath.
She talked about the birthday dinner and what a nice time we had.
It made me feel happy.

Sunday 26 April 2015

Face cream

Sunday, April 26, 2015
Every now and then, mom tells me she needs face cream.
She told me she had no soap.
So I gave her a bar of soap for the bath.
She asked me what this box was doing in her bag and I told her it was soap for her bath.
We went to London Drugs to buy face cream and face soap.
She decided she didn't need face cream
When we got to her apartment, I saw she had a bar of soap sitting in the soap dish.  I don't think she touched it.  She said she didn't use it when she took a bath.  I don't think she uses anything.
She also already had face cream on the dresser in her bedroom.

Saturday, May 16, 2015
Mom says she needs something to put on her face.

Sunday, May 31, 2015
Mom says she needs something to put on her face.

Saturday, August 1st.
Took mom to get her hair done with George.
I noticed her toe nails were getting long.  Then I saw a sign that said pedicures for $15 downstairs of our building.  I took my mom to get a pedicure.  It looked great!

Monday, August 31, 2015
Mom took some moisturizing cream from the cupboard.  I told her that was to put on her feet and not her face.
Mom started talking about face cream again.
I noticed that Minako had put face cream on my mom today.

New Vista - Adult daycare

Tuesday, February  24, 2015
Mom had a great time at New Vista.
She said she threw a ball with lots of power.
She said she was strong.
She said they were put into groups and they sang.  She said she sang well.
She was very happy.

Tuesday, March 3, 2015
Mom was not in a good mood.
She said she didn't enjoy New Vista today.

Mom didn't go to New Vista on Tuesday, April 14th because she couldn't find her key.
I wonder if it was because the Health Nurse phoned her and she thought it was New Vista.
She was dressed and ready to go.  She went downstairs and then she was embarrassed because it was the wrong day.  I think she was flustered and forgot to put the key back in the drawer.

She'd been complaining about a pain in her shoulder, but it was fine on the weekend.  I had already made a doctor's appointment for Tuesday, April 21, but I ended up cancelling it because mom said her shoulder was fine.  She was very excited about going to New Vista and was ready to go at 8:30 a.m.  I told her to take a nap.  I told her that she would get a call to wake her up in time to go to New Vista.  I forgot to call her, but she made it there fine.

Tuesday, May 5, 2015
I called mom this morning at 8:30 a.m. as usual.
I asked her if she was excited about going to New Vista.
Mom was flabbergasted.  She had completely forgotten about going to New Vista.  She was worried that she wouldn't be ready in time.  I asked her how her hair looked.  She said it looked fine.  I told her that she had another hour before they came to pick her up.  She was fine.
When I saw her for dinner she thanked me for reminding her about New Vista.
She had a really nice time.  I was surprised that she was so energetic.  Recently she had seemed rather dopey and I worried she was taking a turn for the worse.

Tuesday, May 12, 2015
I called mom at 8:30 and she was disoriented.  She said she wasn't ready to go to New Vista today.  I told her she had another hour.  I called her again at 9:30 just to check.  She said no one from New Vista had called.  Anyways she said she was going to wait downstairs.

When I arrived in the evening she was in a good mood.  I read the breakfast lady's report and she said that mom had already eaten breakfast and was dressed and ready to go.  I found a boiled egg.  I guess mom made a boiled egg, but then didn't eat it.  I chopped it up for our salad.

Mom had a nice time at New Vista.

Saturday, May 16, 2015
Mom was looking forward to going to New Vista.

Tuesday, June 30, 2015
Mom was anxious and distressed this a.m.
She said she was ill.
I told her to rest and that I would call her again.
She said that she had already told someone that she wasn't going to New Vista today.
Luckily I had hired a support worker from St. Elizabeth to help my mom today.
Mom couldn't remember where the key was so I got a call from Holly.
The key was found, but then New Vista didn't pick her up so I got another call.
I called New Vista and they told me that my mom said she wasn't going.
Ryan said he would come and pick her up and Mula stayed with mom until he came.
No more phone calls so will assume everything went okay.

Tuesday 14 April 2015

Mom's watch

Saturday, April 11, 2015

Mom has been complaining about her watch for a week.
We finally went shopping for a watch, but we couldn't find one to her liking.
I hope I can just get a battery.

Tuesday, April 14th, 2015
Had the battery replaced on mom's old watch.  She thinks the watch is too big for her.  But she hasn't bugged me since.  I don't think she's worn the watch either.

Saturday, May 16, 2015
Mom is wearing her watch.  Recently she gets her sleeves wet and the watch.

Keys!

Tuesday, April 14, 2015

I got a call from mom's daycare that she didn't want to go because she was feeling sick.
I thought it was odd because I had called her earlier and she had been looking forward to going to New Vista.  Mom said she couldn't find her shoes.  Someone was at the door so she went to answer it.  I had to yell many times for her to pick up the phone.  Yoko picked up the phone. Someone at reception had told Yoko that my mom had lost her keys.  Yoko looked in the usual places, but couldn't find anything.  As long as mom can't find her keys, she won't go out.
I had to call St. Elizabeth to send someone over for lunch because mom can't make lunch.  If she had gone to daycare, they would have given her a lunch.
When I went to make mom dinner, I found the key in her jacket pocket.
She was fine.

Tuesday, April 21, 2015
Got Chris to make sure the key was in the drawer when he went over Monday night.
Mom was really excited about going to New Vista.

Friday, May 15, 2015
Mom gets confused about her keys.  She doesn't seem to know which is for the entrance door, her door and the mailbox.  If I tell her it is the biggest one, she doesn't know.  If I tell her it is the smallest, she doesn't understand.  She doesn't even remember where in her purse she keeps her keys.

Tuesday, June 16, 2015
I picked up an extra set of keys for AH.  I forgot to leave them at mom's.  When I got home I couldn't find them.

Wednesday, June 17, 2015
I contacted GH, but she didn't have them.  I asked AH if he saw them at mom's.  No luck.

Thursday, June 18th, 2015
I found the keys!  They were in my bag all along.
Thank heavens!

Tuesday, June 30, 2015
Mom had a bad morning.  She was disoriented.  She didn't know where her keys were.  Home Support called me and luckily the keys were in the usual place.  Mom just didn't remember where they were.

Sunday 22 March 2015

Complaints

Sunday, March 22, 2015
Mom says that she used to stay at my place for 3 nights or at least 2.  I explained that during holidays like Christmas and New Year's she did stay several nights with me.  I used to have her 2 nights, Friday and Saturday, but just Saturday night works better for me.
I don't remember the last time I had a weekend off.  Maybe July 2014.

Mom also says I never take her anywhere.  She says we used to go shopping at the mall.  This is true.  We still go there occasionally.

Sunday, April 26, 2015
Mom was upset because I wasn't eating miso soup.  I explained to her that I had to eat leftovers because they would spoil.  She said she didn't understand.  I gave her some leftover turnip and carrot and she ate it, but then she said she was full.  I ate all the leftover turnip and carrot and she stopped complaining.  She ate the boiled pumpkin that I had made instead.  She wasn't full.  I gave her a glass of milk and the last piece of chocolate mocha mousse cake.  She said it was TOO good.  It made me laugh.

Tuesday, May 26, 2015
Mom said that she had no food.
She said it made her sad that she had no food.
I couldn't understand why she had no food since I did grocery shopping on the weekend and she has people coming in for each meal.  Heck AH was there last night and made rice.  I could see leftovers from when I was there on Sunday.
Then, I said maybe it was just a bad dream.
At dinner she asked me why she had to eat the same food all the time.  We were having pork curry.  I don't think she had curry for quite a while.  She said it was good, but she wondered why she had to eat the same thing everyday.  I said that AH had brought her sushi last night.  I had made yaki soba on Sunday. It makes me feel tired.

Friday, May 29th, 2015
Mom is complaining she has no food.  She is complaining she has to eat the same food all the time.

Thursday 12 March 2015

Bad Morning

Thursday, March 12, 2015

When I phoned mom this morning she was very upset.
She said that she had no food and she was crying.
I know this is not true; however, she hasn't done this in a long time i.e. cry on the phone.
I tried to reassure her that Yuki was coming to make lunch for her today and Elina was coming to make supper.
But she kept asking how, as there was no food.
She was also angry with me and told me not to bother to call and that she was going to die.

I called an hour later and she was fine.

Saturday, August 15, 2015
Mom said she wanted to go to a place where people would take care of her.
I think this is the second time she has mentioned this.
Maybe she is ready to go to assisted living.

Sunday 8 March 2015

New Clothes

Sunday, March 8, 2015
Mom wants a new spring coat.  I just bought her one last spring.  She says it is too big for her.  She actually wore it a lot last spring.  It has a hood so it's good for the rain.  It's so hard to find a coat that fits well.  I told her I would take her shopping so she could pick one out.

She often complains that she has no clothes.  Of course, like many women, she has a whole closet full of clothes.

Tuesday, March 10, 2015
Mom is complaining that she needs new things.  She thinks she has a lot of money and that it should be spent.  She asks why I am so cheap. I told her we would go shopping.  Usually after we get ready to go shopping, she doesn't want to go shopping or when we get to the mall she wants to go home, but sometimes she actually shops.  I never know, so I just start with the intention of going shopping.  It's very tiring.

Saturday, March 14, 2015
Mom says she only has one pair of pants.  She has maybe 10 pairs.  She said they all are either too short or too long.
She doesn't like her new winter coat either.  She says it is too big.  She says she is embarrassed to wear it.  She picked it out herself at the store.

Sunday, March 22, 2015
Mom liked her light green spring coat from last year today.  Thank heavens!

Satuday, May 16, 2015
Last night mom told me she needed new clothes.

Monday, August 24th, 2015
Mom is complaining she has no clothes.

Tuesday 3 March 2015

Money

Tuesday, March 3, 2015
Just as I was leaving, mom expressed concern about not having enough clothing.  I told her that we would go shopping on the weekend.  This is a recurring theme.  Once we get to the mall, she insists she doesn't need anything.
I was almost at the bus stop when I heard my mom.  She came chasing after me and told me that she had no money.  I told her I would give her some on Friday.  She wasn't pleased.  I told her that she could ask my brother tomorrow.  I made the mistake of telling her that she didn't need any money.  Anyways I gave her $20, but she complained it was not enough.
I hope she's not planning to go shopping again tomorrow when her visitor is supposed to come.  I think she may have done this last week.

Saturday, March 7, 2015
Found mom's stash of $20 bills.  At least I know she hasn't lost her money.

Sunday, April 26th, 2015
Mom was worried about her money today.  I told her that she had money and not to worry.  I told her I would take her shopping.

Sunday, July 26th, 2015
Mom said she had no money.  She had her small black handbag on the couch.  I undid the zipper and showed her that she had paper money and change.  Then, I showed her where she kept her stash.  She was fine.

Psychiatrist visit

Monday, March 2nd, 2015
Luckily we didn't have to wait too long to see the psychiatrist.  He was only about 15 minutes behind.  Mom was in a good mood.  The psychiatrist was impressed with mom's ability to communicate with him.  Mom smiled and expressed herself quite well.
She still mentions intruders who touch her things but she doesn't seem to be overly upset about it.
She's eating more.
Although she helps prepare meals, she thinks she can prepare meals by herself.
I mentioned that her nose runs and she seems kind of stiff.
The psychiatrist was interested in the stiffness.
He wanted to check her balance so he asked her to walk down the hall, which she did very quickly.  We had to call her back.  I told her to run and she did.
I think her medication is being changed.

Monday, June 1, 2015
The psychiatrist asked my mom some questions.  I don't think my mom is the most reliable witness.  They don't seem to be interested in what I have to say.
Basically, she is content and they just want to keep her where she is.  She will get her risperidone reduced and her Aricept increased.  She didn't mention anything about intruders until we got back to her place.

Saturday 28 February 2015

Criticism

Saturday. Feb. 28, 2015
We were at the alterationist's.
Mom was fixated on my tummy.
She thought it was too big.
She mentioned it over and over again.
She said my tummy was sticking out further than my breasts.
She asked if I had been to the doctor recently and if the doctor had been worried about the size of my stomach.
She said that she didn't want me to pass away before she did.
It's funny how she can talk a lot about some things and not at all about others.

Sunday, August 2, 2015
Mom was angry with me because we had to wait 10 minutes for the bus.  It's tricky to judge when to go to the bus stop when the bus comes every 12 minutes.  If she sees the bus go by, she gets angry because we've just missed it.  Sometimes the bus comes early and sometimes it comes late.  Anyways she gets angry if she has to wait 10 minutes.  She tells me that I should know how to read a bus schedule.  She says it's always like this.  It ask her not to be mean to me because sometimes the bus comes late.

Saturday, August 15, 2015
Mom told me that I was slouching again.  She said it was a very bad habit.

Sunday 22 February 2015

Persia Foods

Mom went grocery shopping on Wednesday, Feb. 18th.
Yikes!
I have her receipt.
She bought green onions, a daikon (long white radish), jumbo carrot, long English cucumber,  broccoli, and a yellow onion.
That's a lot of skills she has demonstrated.

She went grocery shopping again.  Maybe Friday, Feb. 27th.  I can't find a receipt.
The home support agency called to say my mom wasn't answering the buzzer.  She showed up eventually while the support worker was still buzzing at the door.

She may have even gone out on Wednesday, Feb. 25th again because her volunteer visitor couldn't get a hold of her.

I found a receipt from March 4th, 2015.  She bought beans, apples, an onion and oranges.

Saturday 21 February 2015

Waiting

Friday, Feb. 20, 2015
When I got to Mom's place, I noticed there was a chair by the window.
I asked mom what happened.  After some hesitation, my mom said that she was sitting by the window to see if she could see me get off the bus.   I wonder how long she had been waiting.

Sunday, March 8, 2015
Mom hates waiting.  She hates waiting for the elevator.  She hates waiting for the bus.  She wonders why I don't check the schedule.  She gets very impatient.
What she doesn't realize is that I am always waiting for her.   I have to cue her because she doesn't remember.  I have to make sure she has her bag, her keys, appropriate clothes for the weather, her bus pass, she's gone to the toilet, she's had something to drink, etc.  Sometimes I'm just tired and I get impatient.

Dishwashing liquid

March 6, 2011
Mom was complaining about someone pouring out her dish washing liquid and replacing it with water.  I tried to reason with her.  I said maybe she had put the water in the bottle to clean it.  She insists someone is sneaking into her apartment and playing tricks on her.

August 15, 2015
I was going downstairs to do laundry.  Mom said she would come with me.  I poured some laundry detergent into the cap and asked her to carry it.  She asked me what it was and I told her that it was soap.  I turned just in time to see her take the cap away from her mouth.  I told her it was poison and she spit it out.  Yoko had said to someone that people with dementia will drink dish washing liquid, but I didn't believe it.  Luckily, I caught mom in time.

Hair Appointment with George

Jan. 20th, 2011
Mom went to a hair appointment with George.

Saturday, March 14, 2015.
Mom says she needs a haircut.  I told her she had an appointment in two weeks.  She says she needs a haircut now.  I asked her if she wanted me to cut her bangs.  She said the sides were too long.  I had her hair cut shorter before because she didn't have much hair and I thought a layered look would be more attractive, but now that she is eating better, her hair is less sparse.  The hair dresser and I thought we would go back to her old hair style.

Sunday, March 22, 2015
Mom insists that she was supposed to have an appointment this week.  I told her it was next week.
She says she was supposed to have an appointment 3 weeks ago.

Appointment with Heidi

Jan. 19th 2011
Mom went by bus to her appointment with Heidi at Burnaby Mental Health.

Medication

Jan. 1, 2011
Mom does not want to take any medication.
She says she gets side effects.
She says it makes her incontinent.
She finds lots of reasons not to take her medication.
She says the doctor made a mistake.
She says there is nothing wrong with her.
She says the medicine is making her sick.

Jan. 21, 2011
Dr. Rajabali said that mom could not get the dosage for her medication reduced.

Feb. 13, 2011
Mom says she is only taking a quarter of the pill.

March 7, 2015
I forgot mom's medication.  I remembered around 7:30 p.m.  I put in a DVD of Home Alone in the player.  Got on a bus, got the meds, got back on another bus and got back home in an hour.  Mom was worried.  She said she didn't know that I was going to be gone for so long.

Sunday, March 15, 2015
Mom was angry when I called her at 9:00 p.m.  She said she had been waiting for the support worker to give her her medication.  I told her that I had already given it to her at 7:00 p.m.  She was angry that I hadn't told her.

Sunday, March 22, 2015
Called mom at 8:00 p.m. to remind her that I had already given her her medication and that she didn't have to wait for the support worker.  I decided to hire the support worker for Sunday night as well.

Saturday, May 16, 2015
I called the pharmacy and asked if I could have extra medication for when I forget to bring mom's pills home with me.  I've forgotten a few times and although I have been able to go back to mom's place and get them, it has been very inconvenient.  The pharmacy said they would give me a few doses.  I can't remember, but maybe Chris suggested this.

Friday, September 11, 2015
I can't believe the psychiatrist screwed up mom's prescription.  He asked me if I wanted to reduce mom's risperidone and I said sure.  Then he said it would be difficult to reduce her dosage so he would give her the pill on alternate days.  I thought something wasn't right so I checked her prescription when I got home.  I contacted the social worker today and told her.  M. said that she would call the pharmacy.  Yikes!  Mom hasn't been on risperidone for 3 months.  I noticed that she has been sleeping more and was more alert when she was awake.  She's been complaining more and being more active.   She took a bunch of stuff out of the closet the other day.

Saturday afternoon

Saturday, February 21st, 2015 3:30 p.m.
Mom is resting on the couch in my living room.
She is watching ice dancing, but I think she has fallen asleep.
She just had a snack of hot chocolate, and a chocolate truffle.
She didn't eat the oat cookies or the mandarin orange.
She said she didn't sleep well last night.

7:50 p.m.
My friend bought my mom a DVD of her favourite movie: Home Alone.
She's watching it now.

Wednesday 18 February 2015

Tea stains on the rug

Last June 2010
Mom complained about tea stains on the rug.
I told her that she must have done it and forgotten.
She was adamant that it was not her.
She said it was me.  She said that I had entered her suite, made a cup of tea and then spilled it.  I kept denying and she kept insisting it was not her but I who had spilled the tea.  She wouldn't let me clean it until months later and then the stain wouldn't come out.

The thermostat

Thursday, June 14, 2010
Mom complains a lot.
Mom wanted her thermostat to read 26C.
I had written out the instructions for her. Although she could read the words, she couldn't understand what to do.  I reset the thermostat for her, even though I thought it was too warm.

October 16, 2010
Mom asked me to change the thermostat to 23C.  I asked her if she had read my instructions.  She doesn't understand the difference between the setting and the actual temperature.  I reset her thermostat.  Mom hemmed my dress.

January 1, 2011
The thermostat was set for 21.5C.  Mom said she hadn't touched the thermostat.  She said the heater was broken. I reset the setting to 25C.  Immediately, the heater came on.  "See,"  I said,"There's nothing wrong with the heater."  Mom didn't care.
