Mom ate 1/3 of her dinner

Wednesday, July 31, 2019
Mom seemed much better today.  She was more awake and talkative.
She ate 1/3 of her meal by herself.  It was a miracle!
Jackie gave mom her garlic toast and mom ate it.  She did have to chew it for a long time.
After dinner, I took her to the fish tank room.  She was no longer interested in eating so I let her play with the bubble wrap.  She became catatonic.  I gave her a massage.  She seemed very tired.
Just before 7 p.m. she woke up again and ate some Cheetos and drank some juice.  I was also able to feed her a little bit of her chocolate pudding.

Tuesday 30 July 2019

Mom is stiff and slumping forward

Tuesday, July 30, 2019
Mom was sitting alone at the table when Charlene and I arrived.  Jackie and Edward arrived shortly afterward.  Mom ate none of her dinner.  We took her to the fish tank room.

Mom was not eating today.  She was hunched over much of the time with her head hung low.
She ate a deep-fried chicken skin, half a cherry, a Cheeto and drank some of her beverages.
She did some bubble wrap and hit a balloon back and forth.
She seemed kind of constricted, leaning on her right arm, leaning forward, her head hung down almost touching the table.
We gave her a full body massage.
I left out some food for her and some beverages.

Monday 29 July 2019

Mom is slumping forward

Monday, July 29, 2019
Donna is still in the hospital.  Edward and Jackie were at the table.  We had salmon.  Not my favourite.  Apparently, Robyn was the chef.  Mom may have eaten a little of her food.  She certainly played with it a bit.  Mom was slumped forward in her chair when I arrived.  I was concerned.  It looked like she had drunk most of her fortified Boost.  I poured the rest into her milk.
She ate a little of her ice-cream.  I put some on a spoon and she fed herself.  I tried it again and she tried to put the wrong end of the spoon in her mouth.  I fed her a little of the ice-cream. I think she had taken Edward's juice.  I gave Edward my juice.
After dinner, I took mom to the fish tank room.  I gave her blueberries, cherries, sweet potato, Cheetos and banana.  She ate a little of everything.
I gave her a massage all over her body.  I think she may have had a dirty diaper. I could smell urine.
I put the headset on her for a bit.
She didn't seem as cheerful as usual today.

Sunday 28 July 2019

Half a banana

Sunday, July 28th, 2019
When I arrived at 5:15, mom was the only one sitting at the table.  She was eating a half banana by herself.  She did not eat her dinner at all.  Donna is still in the hospital.  Charlene went to visit her.  She said Donna had an operation and is eating pureed food.  Her sister is visiting her daily.
I took mom to our usual table in the fish tank room.
I gave her some blueberries, a boiled egg, Cheetos, etc.  She ate about half of the egg and I ate the other half.
She played with some bubble wrap.  We hit a balloon back and forth.
I put some Japanese music on her for her.
She ate a little pudding.  Maybe half a teaspoon.
I left her with some cheese and sweet potato.
Her hair was cut last Monday.  I think I want the back shorter next time.
Just before I left, I wiped the table and forgot the towel on the table.  Mom wouldn't give it to me.  She folded the wet towel and wiped her mouth.  Then, she left me have it back.

Saturday 20 July 2019

Asian sweet potato

Saturday, July 20, 2019

Today she didn’t eat any dinner or dessert.
The nurse told me that mom tried to eat a flower again.

She also dumped her fortified drink in her lap.  Poor mom.  I didn't notice.
I think she’s hungry, but she wants to feed herself.
After dinner, she drank most of her fortified drink (the nurse gave me more) and two apple juices.
She had a hard-boiled egg, blueberries, Asian sweet potato, and half a banana.
She ate Cheetos and some cheddar cheese.
She also tried to eat the blue lid of one of the containers.
Donna is still in the hospital.

I tried to get mom to soak her hands in a tub of water.  I got a wet rag and wiped her hands.  Then I cut her nails and cleaned under them.  I filed them too.  Some had dark stuff.  I hope it wasn't poop.

Friday 19 July 2019

Blueberries

Friday, July 19, 2019
Mom was sitting by herself at the dining table when I arrived.  Jackie and Edward joined soon after.  Still no Donna.  I heard that Norman passed away.  He was a volunteer.  He had a headache and it turned out he had cancer all through his body.  They cut him open and he died.  It was a shock for everyone.
Mom ate about 1/3 of her dinner by herself.  I was so happy!
After dinner, she participated in the hit the balloon with the foam stick activity.
She ate blueberries and some of her strawberry whip dessert.  She ate most of her boiled egg, after I bit off the top and exposed the yolk.
Her 7:00 snack came late.  She ate some cheddar cheese.  I peeled her banana and poured her apple juice into a cup for her.  At one point she tried to smash her blueberries into the table.  Yikes!
She was talkative and happy.

Wednesday 17 July 2019

Mom eats an egg

Wednesday, July 17, 2019
Mom ate none of her dinner.  Donna is still in the hospital.
I was able to get her to eat a piece of pork and a piece of carrot.
She was in a good mood.
When I phoned earlier in the day, the nurse said mom weighed 35 kilos on July 1st.  I felt disheartened, but Jackie said that at least she wasn't losing weight.
The nurse also said that they had given mom a sedative/pain killer in the morning.  She didn't want to get out of bed and was difficult to handle.
Mom seemed to be in a good mood.  She smiled and laughed and talked.
After dinner, I took her to the fish tank room and fed her an egg.  She ate it.  It took her half an hour, but she ate it all.

Tuesday 16 July 2019

Mom is sleepy

Tuesday, July 16, 2019
Mom was sitting in the fish tank room when I arrived.  She had her apple juice and some Boost.  Someone was thinking of her.
Mom ate an egg, Cheetos, cucumber and tomato.
I gave her a small piece of chicken.
Mom fell asleep around 7 p.m.  I waited impatiently until she awoke.
For her snack, she got a piece of cheddar cheese, a banana and apple juice.  At first, she played with her cheddar cheese.  I ate a piece and put a piece in her hand and then she started to eat it.  I did the same with the banana.  The banana was not so ripe so I only gave her about a third of it.
She was talkative and cooperative.  But she was tired.

Monday 15 July 2019

Mom eats her bedtime snacks

Monday, July 15, 2019
Mom was sitting in the fish tank room about to play the horses.  I'm not sure if she knows how to throw the die.  Anyways, I removed her.
I poured her a cup of cranberry juice.  I peeled a hard-boiled egg for her.  She ate all of it eventually.  I also gave her a few pieces of chicken from my Korean food.
Snack was taking a long time to be served.  I think staff was late.  I mentioned to the nurse that I was leaving soon.  She let me take mom's snacks.  Mom ate her cheddar cheese and most of her banana.  She drank some of her fortified Boost and some of her apple juice.
I read Little Red Riding Hood.  Mom made some funny comments.  It made me laugh.
I let her play with some bubble wrap.
I put the headset on her, but she only listened for about 20 minutes.
She was alert and feisty as usual.
I tried to get her to do some exercise.  She was not able to copy me.  When I tried to move her right leg, she said it hurt.  I was able to straighten her left leg.  I moved her arms, but she didn't really like it.

Sunday 14 July 2019

took a walk outside

Sunday, July 14, 2019
Mom was sitting far from Edward.  I guess it is to prevent her from touching his things.  Donna was nowhere in sight.  I guess she must still be in the hospital.
Mom had a sip of her tomato soup.
Edward has his own food that his daughter made.  He was very proud and told us this.  He offered his lunch to me.  I offered my lunch to my mom.  He didn't look very pleased about it.
Mom ate a couple of slices of pancake and a small piece of bacon.  She almost choked on the bacon.
After lunch. she was kind of fidgety so I gave her some bubble wrap to play with.
I took her for a walk outside.  She didn't fuss too much and enjoyed looking at the colourful flowers.
I brought her back in and gave her a manju.  She knew what to do.  She polished it off no problem.  She ate it slowly, but did not once put it down on the table.  I put a piece of laughing cow cheese on the table and went to the washroom.  When I came back, mom had put the whole piece in her mouth.  She was experiencing some distress, but she did manage to get it all down.
We played with a balloon.  Sometimes we batted it back and forth and mostly we played catch.
Mom was chatty and generally cooperative.

Saturday 13 July 2019

white bean paste manju

Saturday, July 13, 2019
Mom was sitting in the fish tank room nursing an apple juice when I arrived.
I was so flustered when I got there.  I had gotten on the wrong bus and was half an hour later than planned.
I ate my salad and tea with mom.  I gave her some tomato, cucumber, mango and Cheetos.  We ate boiled eggs together.  Mom ate most of the egg (yolk and some of the white).  She drank a little bit of apple juice.
She played hit the balloon with a foam stick.
This time, I gave her a white bean paste manju.  I put it in her hand.  She immediately started to eat it.  She ate the whole thing.  At one point she dipped it in her apple juice.  I wonder if it was dry.  I presented more food, but she started playing with it so I took it away.
I moved her to the fish tank room because they had to set up for dinner in the dining room.
She was generally cooperative and pleasant.

Friday 12 July 2019

Mom eats fish

Friday, July 12, 2019
Mom was sitting with Edward at the dining table.  Jackie joined shortly afterwards.  Larry told me that Donna was taken to the hospital with stomach trouble.  Jackie said that Donna's sister had been visiting more often.  Donna's sister also has dementia so she comes with a friend.
Mom ate none of her dinner.  She did eat a few pieces of my baked fish, half a banana and drank all of her fortified Boost and apple juice.
After dinner I took her to the fish tank room and she drank most of her Boost and her all of her apple juice.  She ate a lot of Cheetos.
She participated in the hit the balloon with a foam stick activity.
I noticed a security guard walking around and policemen.  I'll have to remember to ask Jackie tomorrow what was going on.
They served mom apple juice, a stick of cheese and a very large banana at 7:00 pm.  I poured the apple juice into a plastic cup, and broke the cheese into smaller pieces.  She ate most of the cheese.
She was in a good mood.  She was chatty, smiled and laughed.
I gave mom bubble wrap to pop between meals.

Wednesday 10 July 2019

Mom is social

Wednesday, July 10, 2019
I saw that Yuki had visited mom earlier.
Mom was sitting with Donna in the dining room when I arrived.
Mom had been up to some mischief.  She had been moving cups and cutlery.
I gave her some bubble wrap.
It looked like she had drunk her apple juice.
She ate a few licks of her food.  She ate some of my garlic toast.  That was dinner.
I took her to the fish tank room to try and get her to eat more.
I sat Donna with us.  Donna was distressed.  I reassured her that she had nothing to worry about.  Yesterday she was wondering if she should take her leftover food with her.  Today she was wondering if she should be in a different room.  Finally, she told me that she did not feel well so I got Larry to take her away.
Mom ate some Cheetos.  She ate a couple of pieces of sliced baby cucumber, baby tomato, grapes and banana.  She ate very little.
I put the headset on her.  She didn't object.
She was quite chatty and in a good mood.

Tuesday 9 July 2019

Mom is more cheerful today

Tuesday, July 9, 2019
I got a ride from Charlene.  We arrived around 4:40.  Mom and Donna were sitting together.  Mom had been busy drinking beverages.  She ate a little of her dinner.  Maybe a teaspoon.
We took her to the fish tank room.
She seemed rather antsy so I let her play with bubble wrap.
There was a sing-a-long.
I fed her Cheetos.  She drank some Boost.
She was quite chatty and joked around a bit.
Her demeanor had changed since yesterday.

Monday 8 July 2019

Mom didn't go to the hospital for x-rays

Monday, July 8, 2019
I called St. Michael's early this afternoon and received a call-back 45 minutes later.  Mom did not go to the hospital.  She did not have pain killers.  She could cross her legs and did not require the lifter to be toileted.
When I arrived, mom was sitting at the dining table with everyone.  She looked unhappy and her face looked sunken.  She didn't smile much today.
Larry, one of the aides told me that she had a lot of poop.  He said it was running down her legs into her shoes.  I had heard from one of the nurses that mom had not had a bowel movement for 4 days on Sunday.  Poor mom.  It must have been an ordeal for her and the aides.
Mom ate some Cheetos.  She had a tiny lick of her meal and her dessert.
She ate a bite of banana, some grapes, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, egg.  She drank all of her fortified beverage.  She ate 1/8th of a sandwich.  I gave her a small piece and then she rolled it up into a ball and put it in her mouth.  She chewed on it for a long time.
Mom did not smile once.
She enjoyed the bubble wrap, but she was serious.
I put the headset on her and she seemed to enjoy that.
She seemed pretty pissed off.
A doctor will check her again tomorrow.

Sunday 7 July 2019

She's alive!

Sunday, July 7, 2019
When I came in at 1:00, the tables had not been cleared from lunch.  I saw that mom had ice cream and her Boost.  Her vegetable soup was still there and I planned to feed her, but she would have none of it.
I was so relieved to see mom sitting with Donna at a table in the fish tank room.  Mom had spilled all of her juice.  I took her to her room to change her.  I was able to change her top, but not her pants.  She had a tube attached to her arm.  I shoved a towel down her pants to absorb water.
I brought her back to the table and gave her some bubble wrap to play with.  She was quite agitated.  I also clipped her nails.  The nail clippers were not working well.  I should file her nails tomorrow.
The nurse told me that she had awoken early and was sitting on the side of the bed with her legs dangling.  She was not given any more pain medication.
Apparently, she did not come to until 10:00 pm at which point she was given some Boost and some apple juice.
The doctor dropped by and recommended that mom go for x-rays.
Mom did not seem to be in any pain, but she did grimace when I moved her right leg.
She was crossing her legs with her left leg on top of her right leg.  I uncrossed them.
I gave mom Hiroko's cookie and she loved it.
She ate Cheetos, cucumbers, Laughing cow cheese, baby tomatoes, grapes, and an egg.
I peeled the egg for her, sprinkled salt and placed it in front of her.  She grabbed the egg and tried to peel it.  Finally, she bit into it.  She ate the yolk and some of the white.  I placed pieces of food in her palm and she eventually ate most of her food.

Saturday 6 July 2019

Mom hurt her hip

Saturday, July 6, 2019
I got a phone call at about 11:45 a.m. from St. Michael's.  The nurse discovered that mom had a sore on her right hip.  I went to see her at about 5:00 p.m. but she was heavily sedated.
The nurse showed me the wound.  There was some cream on it.  They will send her to the hospital for x-rays.  I may have to take time off from work to meet her at the hospital.  Poor mom.
Mom was snoring very loudly with her mouth open.  I wet her mouth with a piece of cotton.  I stayed for two hours, but she never came to.  The nurse said that she would probably be sedated until 8:00 p.m.  I was distressed.  I had been working hard to get mom to eat and now she was so heavily sedated, she certainly won't be eating. It was a waste of my time too.  I felt angry.
The nurse said that she would let tomorrow's nurse know that I would be coming at 1:00 tomorrow.
I had two boiled eggs for her, but I ate them.

Friday 5 July 2019

Social

Friday, July 5, 2019
Mom was sitting at the dining room table and one of the nurses was trying to feed her.  I don't think mom ate any of her food, but she did drink her Boost and apple juice.  She also ate some banana.
I moved her to the fish tank room.  I gave her Cheetos, grapes, baby tomatoes, cucumbers, etc.  I sliced the banana and put it in her vanilla pudding.  She mostly fed herself.  She ate most of a boiled egg.  At one point I left the table and she had taken a piece of cucumber from the container.  She could have gotten hold of the knife, but she left it.  Yikes!  At one point she was playing with her food.  She put two grapes into her chicken soup.
There was an afternoon social.  I took her there.  Shortly afterward, she sat up and looked strange.  I ended up wheeling her away, but when I took her back to the fish tank room, she looked fine.  I was worried that she was in pain or choking.  She became very stiff and bent forward.  Anyways I took her back to the table and she was smiling and eating Cheetos and drinking her beverage.  She didn't get a flat ginger ale today.  I gave her a small cube of cheddar cheese and she ate it.

Wednesday 3 July 2019

Finger foods

Tuesday, July 3, 2019
Mom was sitting at the dining table looking petulant.  She refused to eat her dinner or anything else.
She reached for the half banana.  I peeled it and handed it to her.  She broke off a small piece.  She ate it and said it was good.  Then, she put the rest of the banana in her plate of pureed food.  I fished it out.  I chopped up the banana into smaller pieces.  I put a piece on the side of the plate.  She once again put it in her plate of food.  I put a piece of banana in her hand.  She ate it.  She fished out the piece that was in her pureed food and ate that piece as well.  I took the rest of the banana and added it to her chocolate pudding.  She ate some of my garlic bread and drank her fortified Boost.
She played with her food while I carted our stuff to the fish tank room.
She ate some Cheetos.
I gave her some bubble wrap to play with.
Later when she grew tired of the bubble wrap, I presented her with my leftover chocolate cream pie.  She mixed it around with her spoon, but did not eat any of it.  I took the dish and gave her back the bubble wrap.  I put the chocolate pudding and banana mixture with the chocolate cream pie.
I gave mom some of the chicken skin to show Chris.  She ate some, but then broke it up into small pieces and started playing with it by putting the crumbs into two piles.
I reintroduced the chocolate pudding mixture.  She mixed it up and started to eat it.
She also continued to eat Cheetos and drink milk.
I tried to get her to drink the Yakult, but she complained it was too cold.  I poured it into her milk.
I got in contact with the dietitian today.  She confirmed that she had my waiver regarding finger foods.  She apologized for not being aware of the waiver.  She said mom could have finger foods as a snack: sandwiches, cheese and banana.  It may take a week or two before this comes into effect. I tried to convey to her that mom wanted to be independent but needed guidance.  She wasn't listening.  She said that she had seen the aides help mom.  What the aides try to do is shovel food into the residents' mouths.  Mom wants to feed herself.

Tuesday 2 July 2019

Mom is chewing on something

Tuesday, July 2nd, 2019
Mom ate very little dinner.  She drank all of her fortified Boost.  She ate a spoonful of mashed potato and a bit of pork.  I put some of my diced beets in her spoon, but she dumped them out.  I should have guided it to her mouth.
I took her to the fish tank room because staff was clearing the tables.
She ate most of her pureed pear.  Jackie got her a banana and she ate all of it.
She ate Cheetos and the chicken skins that Charlene bought.
She ate some of my fruit cocktail.  She was chewing on something.  She drank most of her beverages.
I was concerned because she was chewing on something.  I didn't know what it was.  It may have been the chicken skin.  Eventually, she spit it out.  It was somethng fibrous.

Mom eats an earbud

Monday, July 1, 2019
We came at lunch. Mom ate almost none of her meal.  She ate Cheetos, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes and grapes.  She ate a Digestive cookie.
I put a headset on mom so I could demonstrate to Charlene.  When the music stopped, mom yanked the headset off.  When Charlene tried to get the headset and put it away, mom put the earbud in her mouth and it popped off.  Charlene felt bad.  Mom would not give up the earbud and continued to eat food.  Finally, she spit it out.  Thank heavens!
I tried a colouring exercise with her, but it was a failure.
I may try a writing exercise next.
Charlene put the zipper pull on mom's jacket and sewed it so it wouldn't fall off.
