Mom eats!

Friday, November 30, 2018
Mom was sitting at the dining table with Donna and Edward.  She hadn't started drinking her beverages yet.  Jacquie arrived soon after.
Mom refused to eat, drink, etc.  I took her food away to the family kitchen.  It was thrown out except for the main course of pureed potato, carrots and fish, the pudding and I salvaged my milk.  The banana and her Boost were gone.
I tried toileting mom before I tried to feed her again.  I changed her diaper.  She had a pee and a little poop.  She didn't pee in the toilet.
Her hair was less tangled than usual.
I brought her back to the kitchen in her wheelchair.  We went through her photo book and she was cooperative.
I tried to feed her and this time she ate about half of her pureed food.  I was shocked.  She also ate all her pudding.
I wheeled her back to her room and took her for a little walk.  We looked at the Christmas trees and decorations.  We went to the lobby and looked at her photo book again.
Then, I took her back to her room.  Donna was already in bed.
I put mom in her wheelchair and put her at the nurses' station.  She seemed a little put out that I was leaving her.  There were two Caucasian ladies there pretending they were doing the laundry.

Mom is feisty

Wednesday, November 28, 2018
Mom was sitting at the dining table complaining about something when I arrived.  She had been drinking everyone's beverages.  Jacquie said that mom was sitting her (Jacquie's spot) and refused to move.  Jacquie said it took 4 aides to move mom to another seat.  Mom was holding her cutlery in her hands but eventually gave them up to me.
She did not eat a single bite of her food.
She didn't eat her banana.
After dinner, I took Donna to sit at the nurses' station.  Mike asked if we were going to play cards, but I had to say no.  I took mom back to the room to toilet her, but one of the aides was toileting Joan.  I combed mom's hair.  I didn't notice any poop smell.
I took mom back to the family kitchen.  Chris had arrived.  We sat with Chris while he ate his dinner, but mom refused to eat anything.  I got her to finish her Boost.
I took mom to sit with Donna.  Mom got out of her wheelchair and wanted to sit in a chair.

I smell poo

Sunday, November 25, 2018
Donna is sitting alone.  I am just in time to see mom taken to the table.  Apparently, she had a big poop.  I still smell poop.  I take her back to the washroom.  Her diaper has a bit of poop on it.  She also has poop near her hip.  Her bum is clean.  She has poop on her pants around the waist.  I change her pants and her diaper.  I take her back to the dinner table.  Edward is there, but no Jacquie.
I still smell poop.
Mom eats maybe one or two teaspoons of her pureed pumpkin (?).  She eats half a banana.  I feed her the chocolate pudding.  She drinks all her beverages.
Today at dinner, Donna asks several times if she knows mom and asks her name.  I tell her several times that they have been sharing the same table and room for about three years come February.
I peel Donna's banana for her.
Donna's feet and legs are swollen and don't bend properly.
I take mom back to her room.  I get her out of the wheelchair and we get her photo book and go to the lobby.  We sit and go through her photo album.  We pop some bubble wrap together.  We go through the photo album again.
I take her back to the room.  I put a blanket on her legs and wheel her into the fish tank room.  I give her a piece of bubble wrap to occupy her.
I leave mom's new sweatpants at the nurses' station to be labeled.
I say good-bye.

Mom ate a banana

Saturday, November 24, 2018
Mom was sitting with Donna when I arrived.  Donna was trying to pour her a drink of water.  Mom hadn't a clue.  I passed Donna a cup, but Donna was having trouble aiming the water so I poured it for her.  Edward soon joined us.  He wasn't wearing his glasses.  Jacquie came later.  She is really into pomelos.  She said she bought one for 88 cents at Walmart.  I paid $2.50 for mine at Denny's Farm Market.  She is taking Lipitor so she is not supposed to eat grapefruit or pomelo, but she figures if it is in moderation, it is okay.  Well, she was a nurse.
I brought mom's toy for her to play with, but she wasn't interested.  It's the one that has buttons she has to manipulate to make animal heads pop up.
At dinner, she picked up her spoon and mixed her food around, but she wouldn't eat any of it.  Luckily she ate a banana.
After dinner, I took Donna to the fish tank room to watch television.
I took mom to her room to toilet her.  She just peed.  I changed her diaper.
I took her to the lobby and we looked at her photo book.  She pointed to a few photos.  She seemed to recognize herself.  She seemed to enjoy it.
I took her to the fish tank room and we played with a balloon.  It was fun.
I took mom back to the room and she drank most of her Boost with a straw.
I added some milk and then she wouldn't drink it.
I put her by the nurses' station with Donna and Zorka.
I had mom try on a new pair of sweatpants.  She seemed to like them.
I will have to hem them.

Chris

Wednesday, November 21, 2018
Mom was sitting at the dining table with Donna and Edward.  She had consumed most of her beverages and mine.  She was nursing a wax paper cup of Boost laced with medication.
She refused to eat any of her dinner.  I managed to sneak in a couple of spoonfuls.  She did eat most of her mango pudding.  She ate some banana.
I toileted her.  She had a wet diaper with some diarrhea.
Mom was in a wheelchair.  She seemed quite frail.
She was alert.
After our visit, I took her to sit with Donna by the nurses' station.
Chris came for dinner today.

Sunday 18 November 2018

Mom ate most of her food!

Sunday, November 18, 2018
Mom was sitting with Donna at the dining table.  Mom had already helped herself to two apple juices and one milk.  Edward arrived in a wheelchair, but he insisted on sitting in a chair at the table.  Jacquie arrived a little later.  The nurse was able to give mom half her medication mixed with strawberry jam.  I mixed the leftover with her Boost and gave it to mom later.
Mom was totally uncooperative.  She wouldn't eat at all.  I even tried the egg tofu which didn't taste very good.  I had given up and taken mom's Boost and her dessert to her room.  When I got back, mom had eaten some food.  I continued to feed her.  I was in shock.  She kept eating all her veggies, some of her ham and some of her potato.  I was so happy.
I took her back to the room to toilet her.  Nothing.
I took her the lobby and we looked at her photo book.  She was very engaged.  She recognized herself.  She asked about dad.  She looked from front to back and then from back to front.
Then, she started to hunch over and I could smell poop.  I took her back to the room and sure enough she had filled her diaper. I cleaned her up.
She sat and drank her Boost.  She ate a little of her dessert (maybe pureed apricots?).  She didn't seem to like it.  I gave a piece of the baby rusk.  She crunched on it and seemed pleased with herself.  After her snack, I was going to take her to sit with Donna, but she was reluctant.  I smelt poop again.  I toileted her.  It was only a little poop, but I changed her and cleaned her up.  I tried to brush her teeth, but she was not having it at all.
This time she was happy to sit in her wheelchair and go and sit with Donna.

A good visit

Friday, November 16, 2018
Mom was sitting at the table with Donna and Edward.  No sign of Jacquie.  Mom had consumed all the beverages. She was being uncooperative about me feeding her.  Suddenly she cooperated.  I was able to feed her all of her dessert:  egg custard.  She fed herself a little of the pureed peas and carrots.  This is the most I have seen her eat for days.  I felt happy.
After dinner I toileted her, but her diaper was clean and she didn't even pee.  I took her to play hit the balloon with a foam stick.
Meanwhile, I cleaned out her closet, replaced her toothpaste, labeled it, etc.  I found a mouse poop in her bed.
After the balloon game, I took mom back to the room to toilet her.  This time she peed.  I was going to take her for a walk to the lobby, but she didn't want to stand.  I put her back in the wheelchair.  We looked at her photo book.  I gave her a disc-shaped shrimp chip.  She tried to bite it, but then took it out of her mouth.  She broke the cracker in half and stacked the two halves before placing them in her mouth.  I had her drink some milk.  Eventually she did chew and swallow.  She accepted another half a shrimp chip.  This time she bit off small pieces.  She drank all her milk and then put the unfinished quarter of the shrimp chip in the cup.
I took mom back to the fish tank room to sit with Donna and Joan.  Mom hid the cup under the afghan I placed over her knees.  When I took the cup back, I noticed the quarter of the shrimp chip was missing as well.
I went back to the room and got her partially eaten banana and placed it in her hand.

Mom won't eat and drink

Wednesday, November 14, 2018
Mom was sitting at the dining table with Donna.  She had already consumed my apple juice and hers and her milk.  She didn't seem happy to see me.  She wouldn't eat any of her food.  She wouldn't even eat her banana.  After dinner I gathered her Boost, some water, her strawberry puree and some pureed peas, and her banana onto a tray and took them to her room.
When I got mom to stand from her wheelchair, her pants fell off.  I was shocked.  I toileted mom.  I changed her diaper.  I changed her pants and discovered that they were Zorka's.  No wonder they were so huge!
I had brought a pair of pants and a tank top for mom to be labeled.  I also mentioned that mom's green pants were missing.
I took mom to the lobby and we played with the toy where you do an activity and an animal pops out of a box with a loud noise.  I think mom likes it.  However, she was reluctant to push or pull anything.  We went through her photo book.
Usually when I say "banzai" she lifts up her arms, but she didn't today.  She lifted up her legs.
I brought her back to the room and tried to coax her to eat, but she was uncooperative.  I finally got her to drink some Boost after I gave her a straw.
I left her at the nurses station in her wheelchair.  I put her afghan around her legs.

Clean diaper

Monday, November 12, 2018
Mom was sitting at the dining table by herself when I arrived.  It was approximately 3:45 pm.  I took her to her room and toileted her.  Her diaper was clean.  I sat her on the toilet and she took a pee and a poop.  The aide said that last night mom had pooped and was dirty.  She refused to sit on the toilet.  It took two of them to get her to lie on the bed and clean her up.  Apparently she had been sitting in the dirty diaper for a long time.
I took mom for a little walk around the facility.  Jocelyn was with me.  I got mom to take a few sips of water.  I brought her back to the room and we looked at her photo book and played a bit with her toys.  She really wasn't interested in the toys.
I brought her back to sit with Donna in the fish tank room.

Sunday 11 November 2018

Remembrance Day

Sunday, November 11, 2018
Mom was sitting with Donna.  I introduced a new toy.  You push a button to reveal a cat, you slide a button to one side to reveal a dog, etc.  Mom was anxious.  Donna enjoyed the activity.  Mom became intrigued.  Edward laughed.
Ethel was coming to eat with us.  I left mom at her table until Jacquie showed up.  I brought mom over to the guest table.  Mom was very social and engaged.  She refused to be fed by me.  She did feed herself a little.  She drank a little of her medication, but not all of it.
After Ethel left, I took all of mom's beverages and her custard back to her room.  I toileted mom.  She just had a soggy diaper and she peed a bit in the toilet.  I took mom window-shopping at the thrift store.  She didn't want anything.
I took her back to the room to feed her, but she would have none of it.
I hemmed up a pair of her pants.  She was intrigued, but didn't want to try.
We went back to join Donna.  They were watching a football game.
I took Donna and mom to sit with Michael.  He was waiting for the Guns of Navarone with Gregory Peck.  Mom was having a hard time staying awake.
I took mom away one last time, but she still wouldn't eat or drink anything.

Saturday 10 November 2018

Poo poo in the pottie

Saturday, Nov. 10, 2018

There was a christian hymn singing event going when I arrived.  I used the time to check mom's closet.  She's missing several pairs of pants.  Luckily I found a pair at the Salvation Army today.
Larry told me that she had been uncooperative with toileting.  She refused to sit down on the toilet.  The nurse said that she had been refusing medication.

I tried to keep mom's beverages away from her.
The nurse gave mom some medication to drink.  Mom was not cooperating.  I turned my back on mom and she had taken the water pitcher and poured water into her paper medication cup.  When I turned my back on her again, she was drinking from the pitcher.  Yikes!
She drank everything in the cup.
I then tried to get her to eat her pureed meal.  She did eat some.  I alternated between a sip of milk and a spoonful of food.  Then Boost and food.  Finally apple juice and food.  She ate at least half of her food and a few tablespoons of her custard.
I took her back to the room and she did a really long poop in the toilet.  Hurray!
I took her to the lobby and we played with the stacking toy and looked at her photobook twice.
She pointed to dad and asked "Who is this old guy?"  We both laughed and laughed.
When she was playing her stacking toy, she became focused on the pole.  She unscrewed it.  I didn't even know you could do that.

I took her back to the room and put her in a sweater and put her afghan on her.  It was on Zorka's bed.
I put a sweater on Donna too because she just had on a hospital gown.  I also put her quilt on her.

Mom was very alert today.

Thursday 8 November 2018

A good night

Wednesday, November 7, 2018
Mom had finished all her beverages.  She drank my juice too.  She was not having any of her pureed dinner.  After dinner, Donna was put to bed.  I toileted mom.  I was just pee.  She peed in the toilet too.  At first she was uncooperative about getting out of the wheelchair, but then she changed her mind.  The aide told me that she had been uncooperative about having her diaper changed earlier.
I tried to feed her again, but to no avail.
I took her for a walk to the lobby and we played with the stacking toy and looked at her photobook.
At first she enjoyed the stacking toy, but then she got frustrated.  I helped her along.  She liked the brightly coloured top piece, but was concerned about the clean underside of the top piece.  She said the red top piece was her favourite.  She enjoyed the photo album, but I'm not sure she recognized herself.
We walked back to the room to put away her toy and photobook.
I gave her half a banana from dinner and she ate that sitting in her wheelchair watching television.
I wiped her hand with a towel and she thanked me.
We played with a red balloon for a few minutes.
Mom's afghan is now on Zorka's bed.
I took mom to sit at the nurses station.
I think I will have to give mom a chance to adjust to me for a few minutes when I get there.  I don't think she recognizes me.

Monday 5 November 2018

at the races

Monday, November 5, 2018
Mom was in a wheelchair sitting with Donna, Edward and Jacquie.  She had drunk a lot of beverages. She was being contrary again.  She didn't want to eat her food.  At one point she took the spoon away from me and started to feed herself.  I was so happy!  She didn't eat much, but she did eat something.  She even peeled a banana and ate it herself.
After dinner, I toileted her.  Her diaper was full of pee.  She pooped in the toilet.  It wasn't diarrhea.  I cleaned her up and put her in a new diaper.  We went to "the horse races."  She really wasn't sure what to do with the giant die, but with encouragement she threw it.  Each time she caught the die she was confused about what to do, but eventually she did throw it.
She complained about something on her face so I went to get a towel, but she didn't want me to wipe it.  After much patience on my part, I was able to wipe the sticky stuff off her cheek, but only that one cheek.  I was able to get her out of her chair and walk back to her room where I put her back in the wheelchair.  She was tired and nodding off so I took her sit with Donna.  Donna had already been put to bed.
I found some mouse poop in mom's closet.  I cleaned it.

Saturday 3 November 2018

Diarrhea

Saturday, November 3, 2018
Mom was sitting in a wheelchair.  She was served a half portion today.  She ate most of it.  At first she was difficult, but finally she succumbed.  Larry told me that she had diarrhea and that she had just had a diaper change.
Donna put her cabbage roll in a bun and tried to eat is like a sandwich.  It was very messy.
Edward ate his brownie, but didn't eat much dinner.
After dinner I took Donna to the nurses station to sit with Joe and a new resident.
I took mom back to the room.  I could smell poop so I decided to toilet her.  She had filled her diaper again with diarrhea.  I cleaned her bum, but she said it hurt.  I think she has a hemorrhoid so I reported it to the nurse.  Poor mom.
I took mom to the lobby and we played with the stacking toy, but today she was kind of tired.  She enjoyed her photo book.
I took her back to the room and she was ready to sit in her wheelchair again.  She nodded off to sleep so I put her afghan on her.  She and Donna were happy to sit together.
