Mom said my name!

Sunday, March 31, 2019
Mom is still not eating.  I wonder what she is holding out for.
After much changing of locations and moving of food, mom drank some Yakult and ate some Bunny Grahams.  She did join in the arm class today.  The participants moved a ball around the table to each other.  Betty was beside mom.  Mom kept telling her to hit the ball in Japanese.  Mom seemed quite bossy and impatient.
Mom wanted me to stop fussing around her and she said my name.  I was shocked.  That is the first time in like 3 years that she said my name.
She complained a lot.  I think she thinks that she is not being treated as well as the others.
Wow!
The nurse told me that mom had a bowel movement today.

Mom doesn't want to eat

Saturday, March 30, 2019
Mom doesn't want to eat.  Donna does want to eat.  Mom pointed out that the aide was putting too much food on the fork and too much food in Donna's mouth.  Donna still has a lot of phlegm.  She started coughing.  She wants to eat, but she can't.
Jacquie ate fish sticks instead of the meatloaf.
Mom ate next to nothing.
The cleaning guy started cleaning the floor.  It smells horrible.  I moved mom to the fish tank room.  An aide took Donna away.  I tried to get mom to eat.  She drank all of her Boost.  I noticed that staff had put strawberry jam and Tylenol in the Boost.  She drank most of her milk and most of the Yakult.  I was able to feed her a tiny bit of egg custard.  Mostly mom complained that she was not hungry and that she was very tired. We played with the balloon for a little while and then mom said she was tired.

Mom plays hit the balloon with the foam stick

Friday, March 29, 2019
Mom was mostly alert, but she wouldn't eat or drink.  Then she pretended she was sleeping.  She said she was very tired.
I took her food to the fish tank room.
Mom participated in the hit the balloon with a foam stick game.  She was quite alert.  She was engaged and hit the balloon with the stick and her hand.
After the activity, she was alert and drank some Boost and apple juice.  I was even to feed a half teaspoon of pureed broccoli.
Someone had removed mom's beverages and her apple sauce.  I noticed when I was chatting with the nurse so she went to the kitchen and got me more Boost and apple juice.  The apple juice was prepackaged and had a foil top.  Mom peeled the foil off.  I was surprised.  She drank all the apple juice with little prompting.  In fact, she was quite independent when I wasn't paying attention.

Mom is alert, but not eating

Wednesday, March 27, 2019
When I came in, one of the aides asked if mom could have her bath in the evening instead of the morning.  I said it probably wouldn't make any difference to her.
Everyone was seated at the table.  Mom was quite alert today.  She didn't want to eat anything today.  Donna had made a mess of her brownie and mom was pointing it out.  I got Donna some paper towels so that she could clean her hands and wipe her mouth.
Mom said that she was very thin.  But she still didn't want to eat.
Chris came.  After he left, I took mom to the fish tank room and tried to feed her there.
She drank all her Boost, all my apple juice and some milk.  She ate very little chocolate pudding, pureed peas and carrots and some pureed teriyaki chicken.
Yesterday St. Michael's called and said that mom weighed 41.9 kilos.
She hasn't been eating.
They also said that she had gone for a walk with the Tuesday morning walking group.

Sunday 24 March 2019

Mom ate some tapioca pudding

Sunday, March 24, 2019
Edward and Jacquie came late.  Andrew was in Edward's spot.  He was pissed off.  The aides forgot to give Edward a bib so he used a napkin.  I noticed and got him a bib and he thanked me.  He is such a snazzy dresser.  Jacquie had to help Donna with her food.
Mom didn't eat until everyone except Edward had left.  She drank all her beverages.  The nurse crushed mom's meds and I put them in her apple juice.  Mom was a little more with it today.  She ate her apple sauce, some squash, some pureed beef and some tapioca pudding.  She ate better than usual.
It was past 6:30 when I took her to her room.  I combed her hair and trimmed her bangs.  She was nodding off to sleep.  Donna and Joan were already in the room waiting to get put to bed.

Friday 22 March 2019

Mom can't stand

Friday, March 22, 2019
Mom was sitting at the dining table and everyone was there.  Mom wouldn't eat anything.  Finally, when everyone except Edward had left, mom started to eat.  She ate most of her vanilla pudding and some of her pureed squash.  I put her medication in her milk and she drank all of it.  She also drank most of her Boost and all of my apple juice.  Mom was mostly dopey with her head hanging down.
Mom was able to hold a cup and drink from it, but mostly I gave her a sip between partial spoonfuls of food.  Mom eats like a bird.
There was an activity that mom likes going on so I took her to play.  She participated.  She hit a balloon with a foam stick.
I took her to her room to toilet her, but she wouldn't or couldn't get out of the wheelchair.
I combed mom's hair and wiped her face and hands.
Zorka's clothes were in mom's closet:  3 pairs of pants and two pairs of socks.  I put them on Zorka's bed.
I put a quilt around her legs and took her to sit with Donna by the nurses' station.
The nurse said that mom's medication hadn't changed.
She said that mom didn't like to get out of bed in the morning.

Wednesday 20 March 2019

Mom is dopey

Wednesday, March 20, 2019
Mom was dopey.  I wonder if they overmedicate her or if it is the effects of Alzheimer's.
Mom had drunk all her beverages.
The table with the 4 men had broken into song.  Jacquie went over to join them.  It looked like they were having fun.
Mom wasn't eating.  She didn't start eating until only Edward was left.  He was so quiet and he hardly ate anything even though it was chicken and chicken is his favourite.
I managed to get mom to eat most of her apple sauce and a little of her carrot.
I tried to toilet mom, but she didn't want to stand.
We took mom for a ride in her wheelchair.  She had perked up a bit.
By the time we parked her at the nurses' station with Zorka and Barbara, mom was nodding off again.

Sunday 17 March 2019

St. Patrick's Day

Sunday, March 17th, 2019
I arrived at 4:00 p.m. Mom was sitting at the dining table alone.  I took her to her room to toilet her.  I asked one of the aides if my mom had been toileted but she didn't know.  She was kind of snarky about it.  Now I think that they only change the diaper once in the shift.  The shift is 8 hours.  They probably don't care if the residents are fed either because then they would produce fewer dirty diapers.
Anyways, I toileted mom.  She did a poop.  She complained that her bum hurt.  She tried to use her left hand to poke the poop out.  I stopped her.  I wrapped toilet paper around her hand.  I used my gloved hand with toilet paper to squish the poop out.  No wonder she doesn't want to eat.
I cleaned her up and she thanked me.
Then, I tried to clean her nails.  I filled up a small tub with warm water and soap and tried to get her to soak her hands in it.  At first, she was apprehensive.  Gradually she let me put her hands in the water.
I sat mom at the dining table shortly after 5:00.  Our dinners were a long time coming.  Edward was served first, then Jacquie.  Donna's dinner was taken to her room.  Mom's came next and mine was last.  Mom refused to eat.  She did drink all of her Boost that was laced with medication.  She drank some of her apple juice.
Jacquie showed me some photos of a suite in a building for 55+.  $1,300/month.  It really wasn't much.
Mom started to eat after everyone had left.  She ate most of her pureed broccoli and very little of her pudding.
I took mom to the fish tank room.  Some of the residents were playing Black Jack.  I cut mom's nails and filed them.  Then, I tried feeding her again.  She drank some of her milk and ate some of her pudding.
Jacquie was singing some Irish Songs.

Saturday 16 March 2019

A long day

Saturday, March 16, 2019
I arrived in time for lunch.  The whole gang was there.  Edward was talkative.  He showed us a photo of when he was younger  (full head of hair - toupee?) standing in front of a Winnebago.  He told us that he had travelled to Texas and other southern states.  He said that he was away for 2 months.
Mom ate very little.  She ate almost none of her pureed carrots. ground beef and gravy and pureed peach.  She drank all of her beverages.
After lunch, I went to toilet her.  She wanted to go and seemed to want to cooperate, but she was having trouble standing.  I went to get help.  Bad idea.
First one lady came, but was unable to get mom to stand.  The second aide came with the lifter, but she was rough and mom was not cooperating.  I asked the aide repeatedly what mom was supposed, to do, but she seemed to think that mom knew and was just giving her a hard time.  I tried to explain to her that mom had Alzheimer's.  Sometimes she knew how to do things and sometimes she didn't.  I told her that I would do it myself.
I had to be very patient, but finally mom stood up and I was able to get her on the toilet.  I was able to remove her pants and diaper.  Her diaper was relatively clean, but there was a little blood which I reported.
Mom pooped in the toilet!  Hurray!  However, she insisted on using her fingers to squeeze it out.  I wrapped her hands in lots of toilet paper.  Eventually, she was done.  I was just happy she pooped in the toilet.  I wiped her bum.  I used several small towels soaked in warm water and wrung out.  She was quite cooperative.  I was able to put the diaper on her without much fuss.  And back into the wheelchair.
I took mom for a walk outside.  We went to the dog park.  Mom wasn't very impressed.  She cried out each time we went over a bump.
At dinner time, Jacquie wasn't there.  Edward's granddaughter was visiting.  Lucy sat in Jacquie's chair.  My cutlery was missing.  Edward's granddaughter talked a lot.  She is a ballet instructor.  She said that her grandmother died young (68).  Edward remarried, but the 2nd wife was a gold digger.  The second wife has apparently taken all of Edward's assets and abandoned him.
I was jealous because they offered the daughter a complimentary dinner.
Long after everyone had left, mom finally started eating.  She ate half of her pureed peas and carrots, all of her pureed peaches, Boost and apple juice.  She was quite talkative.  She liked Edward's daughter too.
There is a large woman at the facility and her son and grandson come to visit.  They are all huge.  Mom remarked on this several times.
I took mom to the toilet after dinner, but she didn't want to get up from the wheelchair.  I gave up and took her to sit by the nurses' station.  Donna was put to bed early, right after dinner.

Friday 15 March 2019

Mom can't stand

Friday, March 15, 2019
Lots of drama today at work and at the nursing home.
A co-worker went to talk to a union representative about her supervisor.
One of the residents complained about getting a smashed dessert and threw it on the floor.
Mom ate most of her pureed squash and half of her vanilla pudding.  She drank all of her beverages.
At first, she seemed more awake than the last few days, but then she started to get tired.
She was able to hold her cup and drink some of the time.
She still likes apple juice.
She complained about the food, but ate it.  She participated in the hit the balloon with a foam stick activity.  But she was kind of dopey.
After I was able to feed her some pudding and milk.
I took her back to the room and combed her hair.
I tried to get her to stand up, but she couldn't.
She just seemed tired.
Her voice changed.  It became lower.  Sometimes she seemed almost lucid, but drugged.
Donna was sick in bed today.

Wednesday 13 March 2019

Mom will not stand or play ball

Wednesday, March 13, 2019
Mom was sitting at the table with everyone today.  Jacquie was away having dinner outside the last two times.  The nurse said she put mom away from the table so that mom would finish drinking her Boost.  Mom ate about 1/3 of her food and most of her dessert (pureed cheesecake) and all of her beverages including my apple juice.
She would not get out of her wheelchair.
Although she was more alert than the last couple of times, she was still a little dopey.
Today when Chris showed her the photo book, she seemed sad.
I tidied up her drawer and closet today.
I got rid of 3 pairs of functional underpants.  I turned them in to the nurses' station.

Tuesday 12 March 2019

Mom is dopey

Tuesday, March 12, 2019
Mom had been fed all her beverages.  Her bib was soiled.  I changed her bib.  She was drowsy.  Her head was hung forward.  Donna is sick.  She has a phlegmy cough.  She is having difficulty feeding herself.  I help her.  They forgot Edward's dinner.  I noticed that he was eating his cheesecake.  He looked dejected.  I let the kitchen know.  Poor Edward.  Yoga, the kitchen staff, was very apologetic.
I didn't really want to sit beside Donna and help her because she is sick, but I had to.  She could barely feed herself.  She had a sheet draped over her legs - kind of.  I put them over her legs.  She smelt like she needed a diaper change.  She had only coffee as a beverage.  She gets the cheesecake dessert.  I don't know what kind of diet she is on.
I was able to feed mom most of her pureed carrots and peas and most of her pureed peach.  Another cup of milk and another cup of apple juice.  I got her additional cup of apple juice.
I took her to sit with the group listening to the "karaoke" in the fish tank room.  Mom mostly dozed off.  I massaged her legs.  They were cold.  Later I put Donna and mom at the same table.
I tried to get mom to stand, but she wouldn't.

Sunday 10 March 2019

Mom has a poop

Sunday, March 10, 2019
Mom was kind of dopey.  She kept nodding off to sleep.
Donna is sick.  She has a lot of phlegm.
She is having trouble feeding herself, but she is so good-natured.  She doesn't complain or make a fuss.
Mom ate a bit and then decided that she didn't want to eat.  I kind of bribe her with apple juice.  She takes a sip surreptitiously and then I am able to put some food in her mouth.  I alternate between sips of Boost and pureed carrot.  Today is ham and she likes the pureed ham, but she still eats very little.  She never eats pureed fish or chicken.  It tastes gross.  She eats most of her pureed peach and all of her beverages.  But, she protests a lot.
I put her food on a tray and fed her in the fish tank room.  The television is loud and there are a lot of people.  Jacquie didn't join us for dinner today.  A lot of people seem sick and are coughing.
Mom seems so old and decrepit.  Even Edward seems more robust now.  He hardly eats anything, but at least he seems to eat at every meal.
I was able to toilet mom today.  She had a bowel movement.
I wheeled her right to the toilet.  It took a while to get her to stand and remove her pants.  She kept trying to pull them back up.  She had poop in her diaper.  I was able to remove her poopy diaper and to get her to sit on the toilet.  She pooped in the toilet.  I cleaned her up.  She had a lot of poop smeared around her lower extremities.  I had to get her to stand to clean up the front areas and put on her diaper.  She must have been tired because I took a long time.  I got her to walk back to the wheelchair.  She wanted to go to bed, but I took her back to her chair and she barely made it.
I wanted to wash her hands.  She wouldn't sit forward in her wheelchair so I had to use a towel.  She had brown stuff smeared on her fingernails around the edges and under her nails.  I don't think this happened on my watch. I cleaned her up as best I could with the cloth.  I wiped her face and around her mouth.  I wanted to brush her teeth, but she put up such a fuss.
I changed mom's sheet because it looked like there was poop on it.
Out in the hallway, I could hear Lorne singing "Home on the Range" and "Hallelujah."  I took mom out to the hallway and he was singing "You are My Sunshine" in Ukranian.

Saturday 9 March 2019

Mom is still not walking

Saturday, March 9, 2019
An aide was trying to feed mom when I arrived.  I was able to feed mom all of her apple sauce and some of her pureed peas.  She drank all her beverages including her medicine-laced Boost.  I wonder if they give her Tylenol?  According to her Medical Pharmacies statement, she's getting Acetaminophen and Lax-a-day powder.  The laxative is quite expensive at $16.99 a month compared to the Tylenol at $2.60 a month.
Mom is really thin.  Even Edward looks more robust.
Mom complained that her bum hurt.
I couldn't toilet her because the aide was looking after Donna and then the bathroom was really stinky.  Also, mom can't seem to walk now.
I was able to get her to move from the wheelchair to the chair and then back again, but she didn't walk and barely stood.  She seemed quite stiff.
She said that she was "damme" or not good.
She listened to Japanese music and seemed to enjoy it for a bit.
I also gave her some bubble wrap, but she didn't know what to do and started to fold the plastic sheet.
Mom's comb is still missing so I substituted another one.  Very annoying.
I cleaned under mom's fingernails.  Lots of crusty stuff.  Some dark brown crusty stuff.
Today I tried to brush her teeth.  I was a little successful.  I wonder if it hurts?
Donna was sick today.  She had a runny nose and could barely feed herself.  She had diarrhea.

Wednesday 6 March 2019

Mom is weak

Wednesday, March 6, 2019
Mom was sitting with her tablemates in the dining room.  She hadn't touched any of her food.  I was able to start feeding her immediately.  She eats like a bird.  I intersperse sips of Boost and pureed peas.  Sometimes I have to use apple juice to start the process.  She ate most of her peas and all of her pureed strawberries.  She drank all of her beverages and my apple juice too.  She is so thin.
I tried to get her to stand, but she wouldn't.  An aide toileted mom.  She said there was just pee.
Finally, we got mom to stand and we walked her for a short distance to the fish tank room.  She seemed to be in distress so we returned to the room where she practically collapsed in her wheelchair.
Mom's comb is missing.
Mom's pants were too large and were sagging.  Her sweater was exposing her belly button.  I wish they would put an undershirt on her.
No mouse poop in her closet today.

Sunday 3 March 2019

Mom has moments of clarity

Sunday, March 3, 2019
Everybody except mom was eating dinner when I arrived.  Jacquie tried to communicate with mom.  Mom tried to respond to her, but I think she was just confused.
I tried to get mom to eat, but each time she refused.  Eventually, I was able to feed her all her carrots and vanilla pudding.  And all her beverages including her medication.
I was going to take her to her room and toilet her, but Donna was being toileted.  I took mom to the lobby in her wheelchair and we looked at her photo book.  Mom was mostly engaged.  Sometimes she said she didn't know who the people in the photos were.
I took her back to the room.  I combed her hair.  Her pink comb is missing and has been replaced with a nicer black comb.  I gave her some water to drink.  I squirted some strawberry flavouring into her cup and she seemed to like that.
I tried to get her out of the wheelchair.  She did make several attempts, but she said her knees hurt.
I wasn't successful in getting her to stand up and go to the toilet.
She was kind of drowsy too.  At one point she said that she wanted to die.  Yikes!
There was no one in the fish tank room so I left her at the nurses' station beside a Chinese man.

Friday 1 March 2019

Mom is sad

Friday, March 1, 2019
Mom was being fed by an aide when I arrived.  She let me feed her as well.  She was listing to her right side today.  Her ankles were cold and she didn't want me to massage them.  I put a quilt on her instead.
She ate about 1/3 of her pureed food.  She ate all of her pureed pear.  She drank all of her beverages.
There was a balloon activity after dinner so I took mom to participate.  She hit the balloon with her left hand mostly rather than hitting the balloon with the foam stick.
After the activity, I took her to her room to toilet her, but she wouldn't let me.  She didn't want to get out of her wheelchair.  I had been hoping to take her for a walk, but she seemed very tired.
I wheeled her out to the entrance hall and we looked at her photobook.  She was engaged and talkative, but suddenly she became sad.
I took her back to the room and attempted to toilet her again, but she would have none of it.
I wheeled her out to sit with Donna, Barbara and Joan.  They were all having their hot cocoa.  Mom got more Boost.
