Card bingo in the fish tank room

Tuesday, January 31, 2017
Everyone was seated, but dinner hadn't been served yet. I went to mom's room to drop off some things.  When I got back dinner had been served.  I had to move mom over a bit.
She sits too far from the table and sits back so she has a long way from the able to her mouth.  Good thing she is wearing a bib.  Unfortunately sometimes the bib is just not long enough.
We had coated fish with lemon, mixed veggies and rice.  It was good.  Dessert was an egg tart.  We had an orange wedge each.
Mom had to take a pee.  I pointed her in the right direction.  I went to put my chair back in the television room and then headed back to the room with Donna.
I sorted out mom's clothing drawer, checked her toothbrushes, watered her plant, checked her laundry hamper (nothing except for a banana peel).  There was a pair of underpants wrapped in a napkin.  I found another pair of underpants with poop skid marks which I put in the communal hamper.  I found a pair of socks on her bed, which I assumed were used.
Donna and mom headed off to play card bingo and I joined them after tidying up.  I put some clementines in mom's drawer.
Mom can recognize some cards but not others.  She can't tell the difference between a face card and a regular card.  She knows the suits but not necessarily the numbers.  It's like she can only pay attention to one feature at a time.  I notice other people have a problem with the spade and the heart.  They are different colours but similar in shape.

Clementines for Ailene

Saturday, January 28, 2017
Everyone was seated waiting for their dinner.  I had brought sushi for mom.  It was from Sushi Garden.  Next time I will not order the assorted sushi as it has too many weird things like raw clam and squid, etc.  Jacquie likes the ikura.  I gave her a piece of salmon too.  I gave Donna pieces of tuna and salmon roll.   I had to throw out the clam.  Edward didn't want to try any.  Jacquie wants me to pick some up for her next time.  Next time, I'm going to order some tuna, egg and eel sushi and some rolls.  Maybe kampyo, cucumber and chiso.
Dinner was beef stew which looked more like a pot roast, mashed potatoes and gravy, I don't remember the veggie and dessert was rice pudding.  They gave us an extra rice pudding so I ate it.
Mom had to go to the washroom.  Again I pointed her in the right direction.
I took mom's jammies to wash.
We went to visit Ailene.  Peter the cat was there and he let me pet him before he went to hide under Jacquie's bed.  I gave the clementines to mom to give to Ailene.  She was very happy.
We went back to mom's room.  Mom and I went through her photo book and then we read a story about the zoo in her Japanese reader.
I got the cards and went to the fish tank room to play card bingo.  I got Anna to round up the usual group: Michael, Donna, Shanta, Anna and mom.  Anna won twice, and everyone else won once.  I get Michael to deal the cards now.
Shanta gave me a banana at dinner and an orange at card bingo.

Night at the races

Friday, January 27, 2017
Everyone was seated for lunch.  We had reconstituted pork ribs, mashed potatoes and gravy, mixed beans.  Jacquie had coated baked fish instead.  Dessert was berry cobbler.  I was given double portions so I just ate half.  We had chopped up orange after our meal.
I asked mom if she had to go to the washroom and she said she did so I told her to go.  She was disoriented.  I pointed in the direction she should go.  Just when I was wondering if I should go and look for her she came back.  She asked me whose dishes were in front of her.  I told her they were hers and she had just eaten.
Jacquie said that Ailene would visit our table once in a while to say "hello" to mom.  That's so sweet of her.
We sat for a bit and then headed back to our room.  Jacquie went out for a smoke.
On the way to our room, mom noticed that everyone was getting ready for the horse races so she wanted to join them.  I seated her with Anna.  I saw Shanta and I wheeled her in beside where I had saved a seat for Donna.  Donna had to go to the washroom.
I tidied mom's drawers, checked her plant, checked laundry hamper etc.  I forgot to bring her a Kleenex box.  I noticed what looked to be mouse poop.
Mom had one navel orange in her drawer so I put in some clementines.
Barbara was there for the horse races too.  George was kind of grouchy.  Anna was joking around with mom.  Anna is very touchy.  Anna and mom were giggling.  It was because a lot of people including mom were rolling ones.  At least that's what I think mom was giggling about.  Mom is impressed when someone rolls a six.  I have no idea what Anna is giggling about.  Anna thinks mom is my daughter.
Shanta won twice and gave me her chocolates which I later gave to mom.
Shanta remembers my name.

Little Accident

Tuesday, January 24th, 2017
Everyone was seated when I arrived, even Jacquie.  Brieden was playing the piano.
Jacquie got the care aide to pour me a cup of tea.  Mom had already had her beverages and had poured her tea into an empty cup.  I poured the tea back into her mug and added milk.
Jacquie and Donna sang while we waited for our dinner.  I noticed that Edward was not wearing his hat and pointed this out to Jacquie.  Jacquie asked him about his hat using lots of gestures.  Edward said he forgot.  This floored me.  This was the first time I heard him speak.  Jacquie says he's deaf.
Mom had a good appetite.  She ate everything.  We had breaded baked fish with tartar sauce, rice and cooked carrots.  Dessert was a berry cobbler.  Mom and I shared her cobbler.  Everyone enjoyed the meal.  Edward's meal looked slightly different.
Jacquie got two oranges.  She cut one up to share with everyone.  Edward was happy to have a piece of orange.  Everyone was having a nice time just being together at the table.
We left the table shortly after Jacquie.  I helped her with her sweater and coat and she went off for a smoke.  Suddenly mom said she had to take a pee.  We sped off ahead of Donna.  Mom was walking fast, but not quite running.  She was taking a long time in the washroom.  When she came out I asked her to sit on the bed so I could comb her hair.  She suddenly stood up again.  She did this twice.  It turned out she had peed her pants.  Her underwear was slightly stained, but there was more on her pants.  I had her change.
There were a lot of dirty underpants in her drawer.  I'll have to buy more.  Since Saturday, she must have gone through 5 pairs.  I found another pair of pee smelling trousers in her drawer.
Donna went to watch television with Michael.  Anna came to find us.  I had just given mom an orange so I gave one to Anna and one to Barbara.  They like the Clementines because they are easy to peel.
Then we went off to play card bingo.  Ming has been away for like a week.  Jacquie said he hurt his back.  I got Anna to round up Michael and Donna.  Shanta gave me a very nice orange which I left in mom's room.  I got Michael to deal the cards.  At first he didn't know what to do, but Donna helped him.  I told him to give each player 10 cards and he proceeded to count out 10 cards for Donna, but she told him to give one card each and go around the table.  I think he enjoyed dealing.
Mom won 3 times, Donna won once and Anna won two times.  Anna wanted to play another game.
I went back to the room to collect my things.  Barbara told me that there was a woman at her table and she would save her food for her sons.  This woman had two sons who were developmentally delayed.  Barbara wished someone would tell her that this was going to be her forever home and that she didn't have to look after her sons any more.  Barbara said that she had met the daughter and that she was not nice to her mother.  I wonder if it's because her mother loved the sons more or maybe she is taking care of her brothers now.
Barbara said her daughter who lives in Courtenay calls her every night.  Her other children live in Vancouver and Burnaby.
She asked me to pass her earphones and the remote for her television.  She always says that mom is sweet.

Saturday 21 January 2017

Snakes and Ladders

Saturday, January 21, 2017
Dinner was ready when I arrived.  The whole gang was there.  Jacquie, Donna, Edward and mom.  Ailene is sitting at another table now.  She seems happier there.
We had herbed, baked chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy and Brussels sprouts.  Dessert was bread pudding.  Yum.  Mom had already drank her drinks except for her tea.  I added milk for her.
After dinner we went back to the room.  Donna went to watch television with Michael.  Mom hung around with me.  I went through her drawers, put her clean laundry back, etc.  There was only one pair of pink underpants in the hamper.  I gave mom some bubble wrap to pop while I did the tidying up.
We went through mom's photo book.  She always enjoys this.  We also did a little reading from her Japanese reader.  She has a little trouble.  I think it is a grade one reader.
Then we went to find the others so we could play Snakes and Ladders.  Anna was sitting near the nurse's station so she joined us.  We found Shanta in the fish tank room.  I went to get Donna and Michael, but only Donna came.  Michael wanted to watch Titanic.
So only the girls played Snakes and Ladders for the first time.  First I used two dice, but only Shanta could add the numbers so I decided to use one die.  I wasn't sure they would like the game, but after the first game, they got the hang of it.  Basically they just roll the die and then I move the markers.  We played 3 games.  Anna won two and mom won one.  Mom and Anna were laughing because mom went up a big ladder.
Mom's plant was still a little moist so I didn't water it.  I hope it holds until Tuesday.

Friday 20 January 2017

No Friday night horse races

Friday, January 20, 2017
Jacquie didn't come for dinner.  So just mom, Donna and quiet Edward.
Donna asked me if the traffic was heavy several times.
We had sweet and sour pineapple pork, rice and green and yellow beans.
Dessert was Jello with Cool Whip.
Mom didn't drink all her liquids.  She barely touched her milk and tea.
She did mention that her tea was dark so I poured some milk in for her.
After dinner we went back to the room.  I reorganized her drawers, collected her laundry, checked her plant, etc.  I'll water the plants tomorrow.  Mom had rinsed out a few pairs of underwear.  There was one pair of soiled underpants deep in her drawer which I put in the communal laundry.
Donna said she was going to go to the television room, but mom said she wanted to stay with me.
I was touched.  I combed her hair, gave her some bubble wrap and then some oranges.
Donna came back soon and we went to go and play cards.  We rounded up Shanta, but no Michael.
The girls insisted I go and look for Michael.  Everyone thought he would be in the television room.  I even checked his room.  I saw Irma in the hallway, but she was interested in a mouse.  I guess the mouse must have gone down the hall from mom's room.  I had seen Anna get taken away by her son earlier.  She looked very excited and happy.
So the 3 girls and I started to play our game when Michael shows up.  He had been bathing.
Shanta won three times!  Mom didn't win any.  Michael won once, Donna twice.
Donna wanted to know why we had to quit so soon.  I'm glad they have such a fun time.

Tuesday 17 January 2017

Therapeutic Exercise

Tuesday, January 17, 2017
When I arrived shortly after 12:00 p.m., Mom, Donna, Jacquie and Edward were having soup.  I brought mom assorted sushi.  After her meal was served, which was french fries and chicken strips, I asked her if she wanted what I had.  I switched with her and she didn't protest although she seemed kind of confused.  I poured some soya sauce and added some wasabi.  Then I took a sushi out of the container and gave her a set of chopsticks.  Mom dipped the sushi in soya sauce and ate it.  I asked her if it was good, but she said no.  She continued to eat the sushi.  Later when I asked her if it was good, she said yes.  She had canned apricots for dessert.  I asked her if I could eat one.  It was not very sweet.  She didn't think they tasted very good, but she ate them all.
It was Donna's birthday.  At first she told me that it was December 26th, but then she said it was January 12th.
We went back to the room together.  I checked mom and Donna's plants.  It seemed like someone had watered them already.  I hope they don't get too wet.  Donna's plant looks better than mom's.  Mom had a lot of laundry which makes sense because today was bath day.
They had fixed the paper towel dispenser in mom's room.  The guy said they would change the location to the other side of the sink because now that it wasn't automatic, a handle had to be cranked and it wasn't easily visible on the side it was mounted.
The therapeutic exercise woman came to get mom and Donna.  We went to A wing.  There is a railing against the wall.  Chairs were set up for mom and Donna and the other 3 people were in wheelchairs.  They did some exercises using the railing and took a rest in the chair between exercise.  While the residents were resting, the facilitator would ask riddles.  Mom couldn't participate, but Donna and Ankhisa did.  For example, they were asked where a fish kept his money.  Donna said, "in the tank."  I thought that was a good response.  It was actually "river bank."
After exercise class, I decided to take them to the crafty corner.  I asked Barbara if she wanted to go and she asked, "Hell, no!"
Mom didn't want to participate, but Donna was willing.  I was surprised that Michael was quite good at art.  Shanta was there too.

Saturday 14 January 2017

Change at the dining table

Saturday, January 14, 2017
Mom and Donna were sitting at the table.  Mom was kind of grouchy.  She told me that she was full and wasn't going to drink anything.
Ailene came to join us.  She was angry because there was a chair in her spot.  Edward was on his way to the table.  I called a nurse.  She went to explain to Ailene that she had to eat in a different area for now.  Ailene was really pissed.
Poor Edward.  Jacquie thinks he can't hear.  He can play card bingo better than mom and Donna.
I think he enjoys sitting and eating with us even though he doesn't say anything.  He smiles.
I sensed something was wrong with mom and sure enough she had to go to the bathroom.  I went with her.  She had probably already been reprimanded by Donna for touching the drinks.
Jacquie joined us for dinner.  She said she had been sick and in quarantine.  She still sounded a little hoarse.
We had pork patties with mushroom gravy, mashed potatoes and carrots and broad beans.  Dessert was a brownie.  Mom ate most of her food.  She didn't eat the brownie.
Back in the room, I looked through Donna's drawers and found maybe 30 paper cups and a half-eaten bag of ketchup chips.  It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.
I'll have to remember to check for cards.  Mom is missing a deck of cards.
We played cards with the usual group and then another man wanted to join us.  I don't think he can hear very well and he also doesn't move very well with his wheelchair.  He played 1 and half games with us.  The girls didn't want him to join, but Michael vouched for him.

Friday 13 January 2017

Toothbrush again

Friday, January 13, 2017
Ailene isn't at our table any more.  Edward has joined us.  I'm not sure what is wrong with him.  He plays card Bingo okay, but he doesn't seem to talk.
We had lemon chicken, beans, rice and tapioca pudding for dessert.  It was yummy.
We all enjoyed our meal.
After the meal we went back to the room to use the toilet.
I don't think mom washes her hands every time she uses the toilet any more.
I watered mom's plant, but Donna's was very wet.
Mom's oranges were all gone, so I replaced them.  I hope she's eating them.
Mom's toothbrush was also gone.  It was in Mary's drawer again.  I wrote a note and left it in the toothbrush drawer.  I put her toothpaste and toothbrush on her nightstand and there is another set in her drawer.  The care aide doesn't know how this happens.
Mom had laundry.  I put her clothes back in the drawers because they looked and smelt clean.
There was one pair of poopy pants that I put in the communal hamper.  I took the underwear home to wash.
Mom and Donna went to the horse races.  Donna won once and mom won twice.  Anna won once and gave her chocolate to Donna.  There was a new black woman who had difficulty understanding what to do.  Mom was impatient with her.
Neil, the new guy who likes to eat, left in a huff.  Ming was able to divert him a couple of times, but Neil was getting upset.  Maybe he had to go to the washroom.  He didn't even want to take his walker.
George was grouchy too and even tried to kick Ming.  Shanta was in the tv room with her son watching the news.
After the horse races we went back to the room to use the washroom again.  Donna is having trouble with her bladder, I think.  She may just be incontinent.  She's wearing diapers.
I helped Mary phone a family member.  She kept telling the care aide to dial 3, but the care aide didn't understand that it was a speed dial number so I just dialled for her.  Then Barbara, mom's new roommate needed help getting to the sink so I helped her.
I gave mom a new piece of bubble wrap.  We laughed.  Donna just rolls her eyes.
I told Donna to go to the TV room and that we would join her later.
I went through mom's photo album with her.
Then we went to go and join Shanta in the fish tank room.  We met Donna on the way.  She was going to the bathroom again.

Tuesday 10 January 2017

New roommate

Tuesday, January 10, 2016
Mom and Donna sitting at the dinner table.  Drinks intact.
I went to mom's room to tidy up, etc.  Lots of laundry.  Today should have been bath day for mom and Donna.  I don't know if they got to Donna today.
Joan's red sweater was in mom's laundry hamper.
When I got to the table, dinner was already served and mom and Donna were already digging in.  Ginger pork, carrots and broccoli and rice.  The carrots were really tasty.  Carrot cake for dessert.  Although she ate all of her dinner, Mom didn't touch her dessert.  She did eat some of the orange that I peeled for her.  She took a banana from the fruit lady.
Mom dropped some rice on the floor.  She got up so I had to clean it up.  She pointed to a table across from us where someone had dropped food on the floor.
Donna had to go to the washroom after dinner, but she came back for dessert.
Mom went to the washroom after dinner.
I watered mom's plant, but Donna's plant was already watered.  Also, I noticed when the care aid of getting Mary ready for bed, she took mom's toothbrush and toothpaste out of the drawer!  I explained that Mary had an electric toothbrush.  That's 3 incidents with mom's toothbrush.  1.  Her toothbrush went missing.  2.  Mom's toothbrush was in Donna's drawer and Mary's toothbrush was on mom's nightstand.  3.  Mom's toothbrush is in Mary's drawer.  The care aide said that maybe staff may have done that.  I never thought of that, but that is probably true.  Someone who can't read.
Then, we went to play card bingo.  Shanta won twice.  There was a new guy.  He looked regular and spoke regular, but he was really far gone.  The woman with the sunglasses said she would kill herself if he won.  Anyways he won a game.  It was so funny.  He hasn't a clue.  When he won the bag of chips, he immediately popped it open.  He scared the people beside him because of the sound.  Then he began to happily eat the chips.  Other people around him were saying,"You're going to eat them now?"  Anyways he looked happy.
When we went back to the room after the game, mom went ahead to use the toilet.  One of the care workers said she smelt something bad.  I thought it was the elderly lady that had asked to use the toilet half an hour before, but the care worker said it was Donna.  I did notice a pee smell when I was at card bingo, but I soon became accustomed to it and forgot.
After mom came out of the washroom, Donna went in and the care worker followed and came out with a dirty diaper.  I noticed the woman with the wheelchair and dark glasses was in mom's room.  I thought she was there in error, but apparently she is the new room mate. Yikes!
I took mom and Donna to sit with Shanta and wait for hot cocoa.

Saturday 7 January 2017

African violets

Saturday, January 7, 2017
I was expecting snow today so had planned to visit mom tomorrow.
There wasn't any snow fall that I was aware of so decided to go and have dinner with mom.
When I phoned to reserve my dinner, I was told I didn't have any meal tickets so I ended up paying cash when I got there.  I had prepared a cheque for $100 last year, but it still hasn't gone through.
Mom and Donna were seated, but no Ailene or Jacquie.
Mom seemed a little miffed about something.
Donna told me that mom had poured milk in two coffee mugs and then had added water.
Mom was probably trying to copy me.  I usually add milk to our teas.  Unfortunately the teas hadn't arrived yet so mom poured a cup of milk and a cup of water into each mug.
I just used the half water and half milk to top up our teas.
Another man in a wheelchair was grumbling about something that the care aide didn't seem to understand.  He followed me to the kitchen.  I was pouring the milk/water into my mug over the sink.  He wanted to add water to his tea because it was too hot.  I offered my "milk" and he was thankful.
When dinner was served to mom and Donna first, mom said she wasn't hungry.  I think she was still miffed about the milk and water incident.  We had teriyaki chicken drumsticks, rice and mixed veggies (lima beans, carrots, etc.)  Dessert was orange layer cake.  Yum!  I deboned mom's drumstick.  Mom said she wasn't going to eat it.  Soon my meal came.  Mom started to eat her meal.
She ate everything except for a little rice and she didn't touch her cake.
I peeled oranges for mom and Donna.  Mom only ate half the orange.  I asked her if she needed to go to the bathroom and sure enough she did.  I asked her if she knew where she was going.  After a few seconds she asked me where the washroom was so I escorted her until she was confident she knew where she was going.  I just had to walk with her to the entrance of the fish tank room.
Donna and I lingered over our tea and dessert and then we went back to the room.
I had brought African violets for mom and Donna because their poinsettias were looking pretty bad.  I threw the poinsettias out and replaced them with the African violets.  They seemed happy.
There was a nice empty box in mom's drawer.  I asked her where she got it from, but she hadn't a clue.
The paper towel dispenser in mom's room isn't working.  I've been using orange towels in mom's night stand.  I'm concerned because one of Joan's visitor's was coughing.  It was a phlegmy cough.
We went to play cards in the fish tank room.  Shanta was sitting at her usual place so I went to round up Anna and Michael.  Michael won three times, mom won once and everyone else won 2 times each.  They always have fun.
It took a while for mom to get into the game.  She knows the suits, but seems to be confused about the numbers.  Also she thinks she is supposed to take my card and she forgets to turn the card over.  After we played the first game she caught on.  Michael helped her.  Anna helped Donna and I helped Shanta turn over cards.
No laundry.  Also, mom was wearing the same clothes as yesterday.

Balloons and quarantine

Friday, January 6, 2017
Mom, Donna and Ailene were already having dinner when I arrived.  Jacquie wasn't there.
We had Salisbury steak, mashed potatoes, mixed veggies (cauliflower, carrots, etc.) Dessert was apple crisp.  They forgot to give me one, but I ate mom's leftovers.  It was good.
I brought clementines from Morocco for the girls.
Mom really likes them.  She was even able to peel one for herself.
It looks like many patients at St. Michael's are under quarantine.
There weren't that many people in the dining hall.
Ming said there were no horse races this evening because everyone touched the die so tonight they were going to play with a balloon.  Each participant gets a foam noodle with which to swat a giant balloon.  That facilitator uses a badminton racquet to swat a giant balloon to each person and they try to swat it back at him.  It's quite fun, but you have to wait your turn.  I notice that the residents get distracted and forget what they are supposed to do.
Shanta was quite proficient at this.  I thought mom would be better, but I think she got distracted. She was able to hit the balloon but not with the force that Shanta did which seems strange, but I think part of it was that mom was unsure how to hold the noodle.  Or maybe her noodle was limp.
The volunteer was a young Asian male and he was the facilitator, as Ming went to do an activity in another area of the building.
I noticed that Joan, the lady that has the bed beside mom's had a large bruise on her face around her eye.  Yikes!  Joan's daughters were there (or maybe granddaughter?).  They said she fell.
I talked to Sharon on the skytrain last night and she said her mom had a fall.  Her daughter who is a nurse, went to investigate and it turned out that she had had a stroke and she is now paralyzed on one side.  Sharon said you have to check all the time because not all the staff at the nursing home has proper training.  She said that after the fall, staff had checked her mom and thought that she was fine, but the next day she couldn't get out of bed.  To her daughter who is a nurse, it was obvious because half her grandmother's face was sagging that she had had a stroke.

Tuesday 3 January 2017

Donna is better

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2016
Very cold and icy.
A young man was lost outside so I directed him to St. Michael's staff.  He was lost and trying to orient himself with a park.  I think he mentioned something about a homestay family.
Ailene, Donna and mom were seated and almost finished dinner.
I think I got a double serving today.  Lemon baked chicken, rice, mixed veggies and banana bread for dessert.  Yum!  We also got mandarin oranges.  I peeled mom's and Donna's oranges.  I gave mom my orange too.  She ate it all up without complaining.
Quite of a lot of laundry today: two pairs of pants, underwear, etc.
We played card bingo today.  Shanta won twice and she gave me two bags of chips which I left with the box.  Anna kissed me on both cheeks.  Yikes!
Coming home, the 116 was really late again.  It was really cold and icy.

Sunday 1 January 2017

Donna is sick

Sunday, January 1, 2017
Mom and Ailene were sitting at the table when I arrived, but there was no Donna.  Ailene said she was sick in bed for 5 days and this was her first day back.  She said she had gotten the cold from Donna.  I haven't seen Jacquie in a while either.
I went back to the room to tidy up mom's drawers and such.  Donna was lying in bed.  She said she was sick and that staff were bringing her lunch.
Mom had some of her soup.  I showed her how to eat her chicken burger with her hands.  I put a slice of tomato in her burger.  She seemed to like it.  She had a spoonful of soup and then a bite of sandwich, but soon she was having a spoonful of jello.  Mom ate everything except for her soup.  She even ate most of her lettuce.
Ailene started coughing.  She seemed to think it was because of her jello.  She said that her son had come to visit from Vancouver, Washington.  She said his mother-in-law was in the hospital with a brain tumour.  75% of the tumour was removed.  She mentioned something bad happening to her daughter as well, but I can't remember what it was.
After lunch, I took mom over to the windows to see the snow outside.  We could even see the dogs running in the dog park.
We went back to the room so mom could use the toilet, but Joan was there so we used the toilet in the room next door.  Then, Donna wanted to use the toilet.  She said the bed was too high and she couldn't get out so she needed help.  When the nurse came, the nurse told Donna that she had to stay in bed.  I explained to the nurse that Donna needed to use the toilet.
I tidied mom's night stand, watered her plant and Donna's plant.  I'll have to get them new plants because they don't look so well.
Donna was able to get back in bed, but it was awkward for her because the back of the bed was too high.  I helped her to put the covers back on, found her sock and put it back on her foot.  I was able to adjust her bed as well.  I guess they raised it for her to eat lunch.
I gave mom a couple of vitamin D pills to ward off the cold.
