Mom is being contrary today.
She woke up agreeable enough, but now she is grouchy.
Breakfast went well.  She ate well.
She wanted face cream.  I don't like to buy her face cream because she uses too much and gets pimples.  She's concerned that she doesn't look the same as before.
We went to see F. today to get some clothing altered.  Mom was complaining about her clothes.  She felt that her clothes were ill-fitting and not of good quality.
When we got back, we made an apple crumble.  Mom enjoyed chopping apples.  Then she took a rest.  When she woke up I gave her some blueberries and kefir, but she said she didn't like it.  Usually she likes this.  Then she wanted to know when lunch was because it was 12:00 p.m.  I was surprised she could tell time.
I told her that I would start lunch.  She was angry with me because lunch was not ready. She was restless so I thought I would try doing some physical activities, but she said she was tired.  Then, I cut her finger nails and toe nails and that seemed to calm her, but now she's fallen asleep.  I wonder if I will be able to wake her for lunch.
Mom ate lunch.  She didn't have a good appetite.  She's sleeping again.  She didn't want to help dry the dishes.
After lunch, mom slept until 3:30 p.m.  I had to wake her up.  She was cooperative.  We had to run for the bus.  Once we got to mom's place, she went to lie down again and didn't get up until 5:30 p.m.  She was in a much better mood.  She ate well and helped me dry the dishes.  I gave her the apple crumble for dessert and she loved it.

Friday, September 25, 2015
Mom didn't go to daycare today.  She seemed fine this morning when I called her at 8:30 a.m.
When I arrived later in the day she seemed relieved to see me.  She thought that I had gone away for a long time.  She had a good appetite for dinner.  She helped clear the table and dry the dishes.  She often forgets where to put away the dishes.
She often spills food on herself now.  I try to get her to eat over her dishes, but she prefers to sit back.  I think it's because she doesn't have enough fat on her bum.  I have to remember to put an apron on her when she eats and get her some kind of gel cushion seat.
After the dishes I gave her a bath.  I run the water, and then she gets in herself.  I cue her about which body parts to wash.  We start from her face and ears.  She loves it when I wash her back.  I just remembered I forgot to wash between her toes.
She complained about not having any clothes again.  She spreads clothes out on the bed.  It looks like a lot.  She found a pair of pants that need hemming.  I'll have to arrange to visit the alterationist.  Hopefully we will be able to do that this weekend.
She wanted to accompany me to the bus again, but I made her leave her keys in the drawer because I don't want her going outside the building.
I checked her blood test on-line.  Her iron is okay, but her RBC, hemoglobin and hematocrit are flagged as low.  I'll have to check on-line and see what I can do.

Mom won't let support worker in

Wednesday, September 23, 2015
Mom was fine this morning.
I got a call tonight around 9:30 p.m. from the agency saying that mom would not give access to the support worker.  I called mom and she just seemed confused.  When I called mom the second time, she said that the support worker had come and gone.  I phoned the agency to make sure that this had happened, but they haven't returned my call. 10:00 p.m.  The worker gained access.  What a relief!

Tuesday, September 22, 2015
Mom went to New Vista today.  Hurray!
She had a nice time.
She was thinking that her hair didn't look so nice today.
I explained that the support worker had come last night, but that my mom had refused to take a bath and get her hair washed.  Mom said she didn't need any help.  She said she preferred to take her own bath and wash her hair herself.
Other than that mom seemed to be in good spirits.
I bought chicken chowmein for dinner.  She really enjoyed it.
She insisted on walking me to the curb.
When I tried to say good-bye at the front entrance she resisted.  She showed me her keys and insisted she would accompany me.  She waited on the curb until the bus left.

Mom refuses bath

Monday, September 21, 2015
The caretaker called to say that mom was refusing to take a bath.  When I  talked to mom, she told me that she was very sick and could not possibly take a bath.  I asked her if she would like to look nice for tomorrow when she went to New Vista to see her friends.  Mom was adamant she wouldn't take a bath.
I talked to the caretaker and she said sometimes my mom refused a bath and other times she was okay with it.  Mom never complained about Monday baths, but she complained about Wednesday baths.
The second time I talked to mom, I told her she didn't have to go to New Vista ever if she didn't want to.  Then, mom said that she might feel better tomorrow.  I'm hoping she will change her mind about the bath too.

Mom didn't remember about going to Gourmet Club with Minako.

Saturday

Saturday, September 19, 2015

Slept in this morning until 9:30 a.m.  I call mom every morning at 8:30 a.m.  I called her at 9:30 and she was fine.
Got to mom's around 10:40 a.m.  We had a light meal and then left at 11:15 for mom's hair appointment at 12:00.
After the hair appointment we walked up from 3rd Avenue to 4th Avenue.  Mom seemed interested in going to a restaurant.  I was surprised because it was a South American restaurant.  Anyways mom didn't really like the food except for the corn chips.  It was kind of salty.  We had a soup and a fish platter with beans, guacamole, salsa and rice.  Mom liked the soft tortillas too.
After we got back, mom was ready for a nap.
I did laundry and then stepped out to do some grocery shopping.  I decided to try a recipe that someone posted on Facebook.  I bought potatoes, mushrooms and Italian parsley.
When mom got up we had some apple pie that I bought from the coffee shop downstairs and ice cream.  My mom loved it.  Mom watched Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships on television.
I found a turtle neck sweater in my closet.  Mom liked it except the sleeves were too long, the body was too long and there was a mark left by a sticker that was on it.  I'll have to wash it and get it altered for her.  I tried to hem the sleeves, but she didn't like my sewing job.
We folded laundry together and then I started dinner.  I boiled the potatoes and fried the onion, garlic mushrooms and parsley in butter and oil. then seasoned with salt.  Once the filling was cooked, I fried up some hamburger which wasn't part of the recipe.  I mashed the potatoes and added butter, a raw egg and some flour.  I made a patty out of the potato mixture and added the filling of onion, garlic, mushrooms, parsley and hamburger.  The patty was too soft so I added a panko coating and fried it in oil.  They tasted okay.  Mom chopped up the cucumber and yellow pepper for the salad.
Mom only ate one patty.  She enjoyed the salad more.
After dinner mom looked at a photo album that I had made for her while I watched Jewel in the Crown.  After the show we went to buy milk and meat for tomorrow.  I forgot to buy a little milk to take back to mom's place.  I'll do that tomorrow when I look for a daikon.
When we got back I defrosted some blue berries and put some kefir on top, but mom said she was too full and refused to eat it.  She thinks she is too fat.
There was nothing on television suitable for her so I'm playing her favorite movie, "Home Alone," while I clean the kitchen and catch up on my e-mail.

Friday

Friday, September 18, 2015

Mom was all ready to go to New Vista today, but they didn't come and get her.
Apparently there was a misunderstanding.  They will come next Friday.  I'm thinking maybe we could try Thursday.  I'll have to ask Minako if she could make lunch for mom on Fridays instead.  Then, I have to contact St. Elizabeth and ask if I could have lunch back up for Thursdays.  Then, I could ask New Vista if mom could go on Thursdays instead.  Manjit said that there was a Japanese lady who came on Thursdays.  This might work.

Mom had spread a lot of clothes on her bed.  She kept telling me that she didn't have enough clothes.  I put some of the jackets in the closet.  She then said she needed to cover her neck.  I suggested some scarves.  I really don't understand what she wants.  She has tons of clothing.  I just said that I would buy her some clothes.  I found a fleecy that I gave her that zipped up high and she seemed happy with that.

Mom had a good appetite.  I gave her vitamins too.  We had a Japanese ice-cream sandwich.

I gave mom a bath.  She complained about the people who came to bathe her twice a week.  She mentioned a man.  I asked her about the man and then she said of course there is no man.  She loves it when I wash her back.  I asked her if the people who came to bathe her washed her back, but she said they didn't.

Mom insisted on accompanying me when I went to the bus stop.  She wanted to jaywalk.  I insisted we use the traffic light.  I mentioned that her neighbour was hit by a car and killed.  Mom insisted that she knew what she was doing.  She didn't even bring a jacket with her.  She insisted she was fine.  She was upset that the bus didn't come and of course it was because I was deficient in some way. I tried to persuade her to go back home.  Finally because she was cold, she gave in and I escorted her back to the light-controlled intersection and watched as she crossed the street.

Good appetite

Sunday, September 13th, 2015
Mom's been eating well.
She's worried she may be getting fat.
I told her she was healthy.
She had pancakes and ice cream for breakfast.  She's not eating bacon anymore.
Morning snack was a fruit cup with peaches and kefir.
Lunch was a rice ball with peas (mamegohan) and seaweed, a boiled egg and a cucumber, yellow pepper and tomato salad.  Dessert was a piece of chocolate.  Afternoon snack was Boost mixed with milk.
Dinner was gyoza, chicken drumstick, boiled pumpkin, miso soup (onions, garlic, daikon, wakame) and sliced fresh tomato.
Dessert was fresh Asian pear.

Busy day at the hospital

Thursday, September 10, 2015

Metrotown bus loop has changed and now the 129 only stops at Patterson. Good thing I checked.
Spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to go by transit and figuring out where the bays are.  I can't be running around looking for bay numbers with mom. I have to know where the bays are so I can get there expeditiously. Anyways we had good connections both ways so mom wasn't too upset.

I even considered Handydart.  I spent a lot of time trying to get through.  Then, I was told that only standby was available and I would have to call again.  The bus is actually faster because with handydart you have to wait for half an hour and then you have to make detours along the way.

First we got a blood test for mom.  I went to the information booth and they told us how to get to the lab.  There was only one person ahead of mom.  Then, I asked how to get to 4R.  That's where Tomi is.  Tomi seemed to recognize us and seemed happy to see us.  She is very thin and frail.  It's no wonder she broke her hip when she fell.

Then we went to see Mits.  He seemed fine.  He said he'd been in the hospital for 20 days.  They did a biopsy this morning. He said he had water on his lungs and he was hooked up to machine to drain the water.  He said he went to the hospital because he felt so tired.  They sent him home, but then he ended up back in the hospital because he couldn't breathe.  I didn't know he worked for a flower shop.  He complained about the tasteless food.  He seemed in good spirits.

Then we went to Tim Horton's.  I got mom a bottle of juice.  She complained because it was too big, but I said she could finish it tomorrow.  She said we should have split the juice and I shouldn't be drinking tea.  She ate half the banana muffin.  She enjoyed it.

We met with the psychiatrist.  Mom recognized him.  She said she doesn't like him.  She says he always makes her wait.  She wondered why she had to see him since he couldn't do anything anyways.

Mom was nervous, but she performed well.  She answered questions well.  She even remembered that I was her daughter, even though she couldn't remember my name.

Mom's risperidone will be gradually reduced to nothing in about a month's time.  I hope she doesn't get too out of hand.

We made it back to mom's in good time.  I had her lie down for a nap.

I woke her up when I was leaving and she was very upset.  She said she would die if I left.  I explained that Elina would be coming shortly to make dinner for her.  Finally, she relented and I was able to leave.

Clothes

Tuesday, September 8, 2015
Mom went to daycare today without incident. Hurray!
However, she said that she didn't have a good time.
She says that it's just not the same.
She says that there are fewer people.
She thinks the end is coming.
I said it was important to support her friends.
They were kind to her.
When I got to mom's place she had thrown a whole bunch of clothes from the closet on the bed.
I had to spend some time putting things away.
There was a nice winter coat that she said she didn't want because it was too heavy.
Mom had a good appetite.
We went for a walk twice around the block.
She never complained about her feet.
I bought two pairs of shoes yesterday for her to try on.  One in size 5 and another in size 5.5.  I have six months to return them.
Mom was supposed to have the nurse come and visit her to take her blood at 6:30 a.m. tomorrow morning; however, she has to be able to say her name and date of birth which she can't.  Gosh, darn!
I'll try and get it done this week I guess.

Memory problems

Sunday, September 6, 2015
When I arrived at mom's place at 10:3 a.m. the dishes were done.  The dish water was still warm.
Mom said she had washed the dishes last night.  I told her that I would do them in the morning.  The dishes looked clean except for one plate that was a little greasy.

Monday, September 7, 2015
My brother called me in alarm.  Mom thought I was gone.  He wanted me to talk to mom to let her know that I was still alive.
Mom was also concerned about rice and having money.  My brother said he had to show her her wallet and money twice.
I told him to put rice in the container under the sink.  Someone probably mentioned to mom that it was getting low and she was worried that she would have to go out and buy rice.

Matsuri Talent Search

Saturday, September 5, 2015

I was surprised mom was willing to come with me as she had been complaining her shoes were too tight and her feet hurt.

We finished dinner quickly and I left a messy kitchen.

Our relatives were there and so were mom's friends.  Mom was very happy to sit with her old friends.  I was surprised she stayed for the whole concert.

She said she was very tired after she got home.  She said her bum hurt.

I cleaned off the counters, put the dirty dishes in the sink, etc.  I told her that I would wash the dishes tomorrow.  I hope she doesn't forget.

She was in a good mood.

Nails

Saturday, September 5, 2015

I have to cut mom's finger and toe nails.  I don't know when this started happening.  I remember she asked me about nail clippers and I found a a toe nail clipper and a finger nail clipper.  But then, she didn't use them.  She used scissors to cut her nails.

I try to remember to check mom's nails.  Her nails don't seem to grow so fast anymore.

Her toe nails are quite brittle.

Took mom for a pedicure on a whim.  It was the same day she got her hair done, August 1, 2015.
She said she was very tired and didn't want to go, but I had already made the appointment earlier in the day so I had to be persistent.  Luckily she finally cooperated.

The girl spent about 45 minutes on my mom's feet and toes.  They looked great.  It's been over a month now and they still look great.

Bathing

Friday, September 4, 2015

Gave mom a bath last night.  I don't even remember now when I started having to do this.  A month ago?  Anyways after I talked to the new case manager she said we could have a support worker give mom a bath and wash her hair on Mondays and Wednesdays.  I'm so grateful.

I have to tell mom which parts of her body to wash.  We start with her face.  I encourage her to use the wash cloth.  Then, we do her ears.  I point out my ears and then behind the ears.  Then, I put soap on the wash cloth and I tell her to wash her neck, chest, underarms, stomach, private parts, legs, feet, etc.  I make sure to wash between her toes.

Sometimes she likes to lay back in the water, but sometimes she can't seem to get into a comfortable position and she says her head hurts.

She loves it when I wash her back.

She uses the wash cloth to dry her body and then I use a hand towel to help her dry her back.  She dries herself.

I lay out her underpants and undershirt.

Wednesday, September 9, 2015
I just called mom.  She said she was just about to jump into the bath.
Yikes!  Someone is coming to give her a bath and wash her hair.
I called St. Elizabeth and warned them about mom.  Maybe they can just wash her hair.

Shoes

Friday, September 4, 2015

Mom said all her shoes are too tight.
I don't understand.
We went to the doctor's yesterday and she never complained about her feet.
Now, all of a sudden, all her shoes are too tight.
Maybe this is why she didn't want to go to adult daycare.
I traced her foot, but I don't know if that will help me find shoes for her.

Saturday, September 5, 2015

Today I tried cutting her toenails.  It seemed to help a bit, but she is still complaining about her feet when she wears shoes.

Anyways she went out for lunch with me at Hi Genki and she went to the Matsuri Talent Search.

Thursday, September 10, 2015
I bought shoes for mom last Monday and brought them today.  She tried them on and said they were fine.  She also tried her other shoes on and said they were fine.  Maybe I didn't have to buy new shoes.

Sunday, September 13th, 2015
I'm taking the size 5s back to the store and mom is keeping the size 5.5s.
she does look like she had some foot trauma in her nail bed.  It's red. Maybe she stubbed some toes.  She says she doesn't have any pain when I squish her toes.

New Vista - Friday

Friday, September 4, 2015

Mom didn't go to New Vista today.
I don't understand.
She was so excited about going yesterday.
Today she said she was too ill to go.
I have lunch support arranged with St. Elizabeth so that if mom doesn't go to daycare she still gets lunch.
Very disappointed.
