A better day

Wednesday, January 30, 2019
Mom was sitting with the gang.  I gave mom some bubble wrap to occupy her.
She wasn't eating anything.  I ate dinner.  After I had finished dinner, I moved my chair to the other side of her.  After some resistance, she started to eat.  She ate about half her veggies and mashed potatoes.  She ate all her chocolate pudding and all her beverages.  She had about two bites of her banana.  I was happy with that.
Larry told me that he had already changed mom's diaper before dinner.
I took mom back to the room, but she wouldn't get out of her wheelchair.
I massaged her legs.  Her ankles were so cold!  I wonder if I should get her some leg warmers.
I got Chris to massage her legs too.  I gave her the hedgehog that Ethel had given her to hold.  She was so cute!  Chris took a photo, but she wasn't smiling.  I got mom's photo book and pointed to some photos of me and Chris when we were toddlers and mom smiled.  Chris got a good photo of her smiling.  Finally, we were able to get her to stand up.
We took her for a walk to the lobby.  We passed a balloon back and forth.  Mom insisted on including Chris.  We walked back to mom's room and returned her to the wheelchair.  We wheeled her out to the fish tank room to sit with Donna, Barbara and Zorka.

Mom is contrary

Sunday, January 27, 2019
No Jacquie today.  Mom had already drunk most of her beverages.  She was not going to eat anything.  After I had my dinner, I tried to get her to eat and she was cooperative.  I don't know if she was afraid of the black aide or if she saw Donna being fed and decided to cooperate.  Anyways mom ate 2/3 of her food, all her pureed peach(?) and an extra apple juice.  Food wise it was the most she has eaten with me for a long time.
Mom was very uncooperative regarding the toilet.  First, she wouldn't get out of the wheelchair.  She stuck her feet out into the air, but wouldn't put them on the ground.  The aide helped me get mom out of the chair.  She pulled mom's arms from the front.  She walked me to the toilet.  Mom wasn't going to cooperate, but the aide got her pants and diapers off and sitting on the toilet.  Mom's diaper had skid marks.  Nothing came out of mom that I could see.  I had a towel draped over her thighs and put an extra jacket on her to keep her warm.  I tried to get her to stand up, but she wouldn't cooperate.  I waited outside for a few minutes and then finally she stood up, but she wouldn't let me wipe her and she wouldn't let me put her diaper on.  I walked her to her bed, sat her down and showed her the diaper.  Finally, I got her to stand up, so I could put the diaper on.
We walked to the lobby and we looked at her photo book.  She seemed calmer.  I walked mom back to her room and put her in her wheelchair.  I wheeled her to the fish tank room.  Zorka and Irma were there, but they aren't mom's favourite people.

Play ball

Saturday, January 26, 2019
Mom was sitting at the dinner table with the whole gang.  I asked for dinner last minute and was rewarded with two cabbage rolls.  I ate them all.  Mom was not eating anything.  She did take her meds when the nurse came.  Jacquie said that mom must be hungry because she didn't have any lunch either.
Eventually, mom let me feed her.  She drank all her beverages, most of my milk and all of my apple juice.  I peeled an apple for her, but she would have none of it.  I ate it.  I felt so full.  She ate about a third of her dinner (pureed peas, mashed potatoes, and pureed beef).
After dinner, I toileted her.  I massaged her legs while she was in the wheelchair.  I got her stand and walked her to the toilet.  She was actually quite cooperative today.  She didn't pee or poop, but I had seen some poop in the toilet earlier so I think she pooped already.  However, it wasn't reported.  I changed mom's diaper because she had peed.  I trimmed mom's bangs and washed her face while I was waiting for her to produce something on the toilet, but nothing happened. I changed her pants because I wanted to put her in the sweat pants I got her.  I put her in the blue ones because her gray pairs were missing.  I wonder if they will come back.
On the way to the lobby, we passed through the fish tank room and I spotted a balloon so we went to get it.  Mom and I passed the balloon between us in the lobby.  We looked at the photo book and then we played with the balloon again.  We walked back to her room and I put her in the wheelchair again, gave her some bubble wrap and then sat her with Donna and Barbara by the nurses' station.  Mom waved good-bye to me.  She was in a good mood.

Wednesday 23 January 2019

Mom is contrary and I saw a mouse!

Wednesday, January 23, 2019
Chris called to say he was sick.
Mom was sitting with Donna and Edward when I arrived.  Jacquie arrived shortly after.  I got mom some bubble wrap to play with. Mom and I were served much later than everyone.  Mom wouldn't eat anything.   She ate maybe one spoonful of carrots and peas and less than that of pureed peaches.  Jacquie said yesterday no one was feeding her and miraculously she fed herself.  She said they had spaghetti.  I must admit the pureed spaghetti sauce is pretty good and mom must have been hungry.
Almost everyone had left the dining room.  I decided to massage mom's legs.  Mom said that she had pain and pointed to her crotch.  I took that to mean she wanted to use the toilet.  It took a bit of coaxing, but I got her out of the wheelchair and into the washroom.  In the washroom, she refused to pull down her pants and sit on the toilet.  I brought her back to her wheelchair, but then she said she wanted to go to the washroom.  This time she let me pull down her pants and seat her on the toilet, but nothing happened except a fart.  Her diaper was clean and she was clean, but her diaper was a bit askew so I fixed it.
There was a towel in the sink.  I assumed it was clean, but there was blood on it.  Yuck!  There wasn't a laundry cart nearby so I just put it on the floor.  I cleaned the sink out with disinfectant.
I took mom back to the dining room, but the table had already been cleared.  The half a banana was left behind.
I went back to the room to get mom's photo book and saw a mouse run from mom's closet to the utility closet by the sink.  It was fast.  I reported it to the nurses' station, but she said she belonged to a different ward.  I reported it to the care aide who was getting Joan ready for bed and she said there was nothing she could do about it.  They were everywhere.
I went to collect mom from the dining room. We went to the lobby and I put her feet up on a chair and massaged her calves.  We looked at her photo book.  She didn't recognize herself.  I had to tell her several times and then she smiled.
I tried to feed mom the banana.  Mom ate very little of it.  I gave her some water too, but she drank very little.
We went back to her room.  I put her in the wheelchair and sat her with Barbara at the nurses' station.  Donna had been left by her bed.  I asked her if she was cold and she replied in the affirmative.  Her legs were bare.  I put a blanket on her and she was grateful.

Monday 21 January 2019

Another good day

Monday, January 21, 2019
Mom had already helped herself to some drinks and rearranged our cutlery.   I brought some bubble wrap for mom to play with.  Donna, Edward and Jacquie were all there.  Mom kept refusing to eat anything.  Finally, after everyone left, she ate about 2/3 of her food including her pureed carrots, potatoes and gravy, vanilla pudding and all of her beverages.
I massaged her legs because they were cold.  Also, mom was slouching.
After dinner, I took mom back to the room to toilet her.  She was reasonably cooperative.  I think the leg massages help.  Also, she may have known she was going to have a bowel movement.  Her diaper was wet, so I removed it.  I put a towel over her legs to keep her warm  I gave her some bubble wrap to keep her occupied.  She produced some poop.  A medium amount.  We were very happy.  I cleaned mom up.
Then we went for a walk to the lobby.  I brought her photo book and a quilt to throw over her legs and keep her warm.  I massaged her legs and propped them up on a chair and then draped the quilt over them.  We looked at her photo book.  She was engaged and happy.
I took mom back to her room. I took her to the washroom one more time, but this time, she insisted that she did not need to use the toilet.  I put her back in the wheelchair, draped the quilt over her legs and took her to sit with Donna in the fish tank room.
Mom chose bubble wrap over half a banana.  I ate the banana.

Saturday 19 January 2019

A good day

Saturday, January 19, 2019
I arrived late.  Mom had drunk some beverages, but she hadn't touched any of her food.  Everyone was almost finished eating.  Mom was a bit contrary, but I just waited her out.  I was able to feed mom a little at first and then she ate all her veggies and all her dessert and some banana.  I was happy with that.
I took mom back to her room to toilet her.  Again, mom was not cooperative at first, but she came around.  She soiled her diaper a bit, but she did most of the poop in the toilet.  Hurray!
I brushed her hair.
We walked to the lobby and looked at her photo book twice.
We walked back and I put her in the wheelchair.  Donna and Joan were already in bed and the lights were turned off.
I sat her with Barbara and Zorka.

Friday 18 January 2019

Mom goes to bed early

Friday, January 18, 2019
Mom was sitting with Donna and Edward.  Jacquie joined us later.  Mom got served first.  She wasn't going to eat anything.  She was contrary.  She drank some apple juice and when I tried to take it away from her she wouldn't give the cup up.
I massaged mom's legs.  She really likes it.  She always thanks me.
After everyone else had left, she finally let me feed her a few spoonfuls.  She drank all her beverages.
I was going to take her back to the room to toilet her, but they were doing one of mom's favourite activities in the fish tank room.  They were using foam sticks to hit a balloon.  Mom was quite aggressive and hit the balloon hard with either her hand or the foam stick.
After the activity, I took mom back to the room to toilet her, but she would have none of it.  I got her out of the wheelchair, in the bathroom and had her pants down, but she was indignant and pulled her pants back up.  Her diaper looked relatively dry with skid marks.  Larry had told me earlier that mom had had a diaper change before dinner.
I combed mom's hair, but she wouldn't let me brush her teeth.
I tried to get her back into the wheelchair but she laid down in the bed.  I took her shoes off and pulled the covers over her and left shortly after.

Wednesday 16 January 2019

Mom has a new wheelchair and it already smells like pee

Wednesday, January 16, 2019
Mom was sitting at the dining table with Donna.  Both Donna and mom were in new wheelchairs.  Donna was not listing today. I gave her some bubble wrap to play with while she was waiting.  She had already drunk half her beverages.  She didn't want to eat.  After everyone except Donna had left she took her first spoon.  She ate most of her pureed carrot.  She ate most of her 1/2 of a banana.  She drank most of her beverages.
I massaged her legs because they were so cold.
I took her back to the room to toilet her.  I massaged her legs.  Once she was up on her legs, she was pretty steady on her feet.  I sat her on the toilet.  Her bum was a little dirty, but she only had pee in her diaper.  I changed her diaper.
Her nails had been clipped.  Finally.
Chris and I took mom for a little walk around the facility.  She was happy.  I got Chris to massage mom's legs.  They were warm.  I guess the walking and the massaging helped.
I reported that mom's wheelchair smelt like pee.

Sunday 13 January 2019

Wheelchair is back

Sunday, January 13, 2019
Donna was sitting at the table, but mom was in the fish tank room in her wheelchair.  I took mom to her room to toilet her.  Mom was not being cooperative.  Finally, she stood and let me lead her to the washroom.  Again, mom was stalling.  Finally, I pulled down her pants and got her to sit on the toilet.  Her toilet was soaked with pee.  I changed her diaper.  I noticed a little blood so I reported it to the nurse.
I wheeled mom out to the dining room.  Edward soon joined us, but no sign of Jacquie.  We had ham with pineapple sauce, scalloped potatoes and Italian mixed veggies.  Dessert was fruit cocktail.  Mom ate most of her meat and some of her pureed carrot.  It tasted pretty good.  She only had a tiny bit of her pureed peach (?).  She drank all her beverages.
After dinner, I wheeled Donna to the Black Jack table.  I took mom back to the room to toilet her.  She was clean.  I combed her hair, washed her face, brushed her teeth, etc. while I sat her on the toilet.  Nothing.
I grabbed her afghan and her photo book and we sat in the lobby and looked at her book.  I massaged her legs.  I put her legs up on a chair and put the afghan over them. When we finished looking at the photo book the 2nd time, I took her back to the room.  I toileted her again, but again nothing.  and put her in her wheelchair.  I put the afghan over her legs.  I sat her with Donna.

Mom's wheelchair is broken

Saturday, January 13, 2019
Mom was sitting in a chair.  One of the residents, a man in a wheelchair, told me that the right brake had fallen off the chair and that the facilities person would repair it the next day.
I gave mom some bubble wrap to play while she waited for dinner.
We had butter chicken.  Yum!
Donna was more interested in her dessert: lemon tart.  But we, Jacquie and I,  told her that she should eat more of her dinner first.  Donna was listing to one side as usual.
I massaged mom's legs and she really liked it.  She thanked me.
She ate a bit.  She drank all her beverages.  She ate all her dessert.  I was delicious.  I think it was lemon and egg whites and lots of sugar.
I toileted mom.  She had a small poop stuck in her bum.  I combed her hair.  Washed her face with a towel.  Brushed her teeth.  Cleaned under her fingernails.  Massaged her calves.  I did all this while she was sitting on the toilet.  Her diaper was clean.  Larry had told me that.
I took mom for a walk to the lobby and we looked at her photo book.  I propped mom's legs on a chair and massaged them.  She was very happy.
Donna was still sitting in the fish tank room when we arrived.  I got a chair and put mom beside Donna.  I tried to feed her some banana, but she only ate a small piece.
I asked the nurse how much mom weighed.
43.4 kg on Jan. 9, 2019
95.7 lbs.

Wednesday 9 January 2019

Chris visits

Wednesday, January 9, 2019
When I arrived, mom was sitting with Donna and Edward and three aides were also sitting at the table chatting.  I was worried that something happened to mom, but she seemed okay.  Jacquie joined us later.  Mom refused to eat anything.  She was amenable to eating half a banana.  She drank most of her Boost.  I asked for a cover for her food and kept it for later.  Maybe to eat with Chris.
I took mom to her room to toilet her.  She was okay.  I rub her calves and she likes that.  Her legs always feel cold.
I toileted her.  She had some poop in her butt, but her diaper was pretty clean except for pee.  I changed her diaper and wiped her up.  I wiped her face too and washed her hands.
Chris went through a bit of the photo book with mom.
We walked mom back to the kitchen and I tried to get mom to eat.  Eventually, I was able to get her to drink her apple juice, eat her pureed strawberries and a teaspoon of pureed carrot.
She was in a good mood and talked a lot and laughed.
She was still in a good mood when we left her at the nurses' station.  I put a flannel sheet over her legs.

Monday 7 January 2019

Mom is contrary

Monday, January 7, 2019
Mom was not eating.  She didn't eat until after 6:00 p.m.  She ate most of her pureed veggies and all of her chocolate pudding.  She drank all her beverages and ate a few pieces of banana.
Her diaper was wet, but no poop.  She was dressed in her summer pants.
I changed her into her sweatpants and put a sweater on her.
Mom was quite contrary today.  She refused to eat.  Next time, I think I will just put a lid on it and feed her later.
She was able to walk.  She wouldn't let me brush her teeth.  I brought an orange stick to clean her nails.
I left her at the nurses' station with some bubble wrap.

Saturday 5 January 2019

Mom didn't eat much

Saturday, January 5, 2018
Mom was sitting with Donna and Edward had just arrived.  I smelt mom's underpants and I could smell poop.  I took her to her room for toileting.  She had poop in her diaper and she did poop in the toilet too.  I cleaned her up and brought her back to the dinner table.
She was not interested in her food.  She had a few bites.  She drank all her beverages.  She had a couple of bites of banana.  I was hoping that she would eat more because she had just had a good poop, but nope.
After dinner, I took Donna to sit at the nurses' station.  I took mom back to the room for another diaper change.  She had a skid mark in her diaper.  Once I got her on the toilet, she peed and then she pooped a little.  She insisted she was finished so I cleaned her up.  I washed her hands and cleaned under her nails.  I wish they wouldn't let her nails get so long and paint them.
She was quite stiff today.  She had trouble getting up.  She said that her right hip hurt.  I should check next time.  Also, her lip was bleeding.  We went through her photo book.
I walked mom out to the lobby and back, but she seemed to have difficulty getting up from the chair.
She seemed quite lucid today.  She tried to explain that she wasn't well.
When we got back to the room, Donna was still there.  Donna wanted to sit with mom at the nurses' station so I wrapped a blanket around her legs and took her.  An aide came to collect Donna.  Donna had been sitting by her bed for at least half an hour with bare legs.  The aide said that she was on a break.  I left mom with Barbara and Lorne.  Mom looked sad.

Wednesday 2 January 2019

No Chris

Wednesday, January 2, 2018
Mom was seated at the table with Donna, Edward and Jacquie.  An aide was feeding her.  The bus schedule had changed by 5 minutes and I missed it.
Mom was sometimes cooperative and sometimes uncooperative.  She ate about 1/3 of her dinner.  She ate all of her chocolate pudding. She drank all of her beverages.
After dinner, I toileted mom.  She pooped and peed in the toilet.  Hurray!  She was a little stiff.  We walked around and we looked at her photo book a couple of times.
Chris didn't show up.  He didn't call.  I guess he is still on holiday.
Mom's legs were cold so I put her afghan over her legs.  I massaged them too.
I combed mom's hair and brushed her teeth and wiped her face.

Tuesday 1 January 2019

Happy New Year!

Tuesday, January 1, 2019
Mom, Donna and Edward were sitting at the dining table. Donna was listing.  I tried to make her upright.  Two aides came and tried to get her to sit up.
Donna is not supposed to have apple juice, but they gave her a nanaimo bar and an orange.
Mom drank all her beverages.  She ate about half her food with a lot of coaxing.
After dinner I took her back to the room to toilet her.  Her diaper was relatively clean.  She did have some soft poop stuck in her butt.  She took a pee.  I cleaned her up, but I suspect she will have a bowel movement.
Mom complained about getting up from the wheelchair, but once we started walking, she seemed okay.  Her legs were cold so I rubbed them.  She liked that.  I put a sweater on her.  She was wearing a vest, but I thought the sweater would be warmer.
We looked at her photo book.  I showed her some videos from some other visits.  She liked that.
I brought her to the nurses station to sit with Lorne and Barbara.  I draped a flannel sheet over her legs.
