Hot summer night

Friday, June 30, 2017
Mom had already polished off all her beverages and mine too when I arrived.  She said she wasn't hungry, but was indignant when we were served last.  We had chicken with gravy, rice and carrots. Dessert was tapioca pudding.  Mom ate all her food except for the pudding.  After she finished eating, she informed me that she had to go to the washroom.  We almost made it.  I made her wait a bit because I wanted to clean the toilet seat first so she dripped a bit.  I changed her underpants and pants.  I wiped her bum too.
When I emptied out the pockets of mom pants to put in the laundry, I found two Canada flag pins.  I put them on her night table.  She thought they were candies.  I put them in her drawer.  I noticed that all the others were wearing their pins.
I brought 5 pairs of pink underpants to be labeled.  I inquired about the undershirt and nightgown I had brought to be labeled two weeks ago.  They had a record, but I haven't seen them in her closet yet.
We played cards.  It was really hot.  Michael dealed.  Anna was impatient with the others when they couldn't find their card.  An ambulance appeared.  Shanta was mesmerized.  Michael said that the ambulance came quite often.  Anna wondered who was being taken away.  Mom and Donna were oblivious.
They all had a good time.  Michael forgot to bring the Monopoly money today.
I got Anna to sing Volare, but she couldn't remember the words and started making up stuff using bad words.

Doritos

Tuesday, June 27, 2017
Mom and Donna had finished dinner and were waiting in their room for card bingo.
First I escorted mom to a good seat and went back for Donna who had just been changed.
Mom had pull ups and Donna had diapers.
Mom hardly had any underpants in her drawer.
Donna won a bag of Doritos.
Mom pretended she was going to steal them and laughed.
Mom was able to help Donna a bit at card bingo.

Too hot!

Sunday, June 25, 2017
Mom was in her room.  I asked her if she wanted to go to the washroom, but she said she was fine.
We went to play cards with the gang.  It was so hot in the fish tank room.  They had the lights off in the nurses' station area.
Shortly after we started playing cards, one of the nurses put the fan on for us. What a relief!  I was sweating.  Mom was still wearing the orange short-sleeved striped top that she was wearing on Friday.  She only had one pair of underpants in her drawer.  I'll have to buy some more pairs.
After cards I went back to mom's room to put the cards back.  Barbara was sitting there so I wheeled her in to join the girls.  I sang "You are my Sunshine" and Barbara, Donna and mom sang along.  I broke into So Long, Farewell and made my exit.

Mom had visitors yesterday

Friday, June 23, 2017
Mom was not sitting at the table when I arrived.  I saw a nurse was escorting her to the table.  She said that mom didn't come to dinner so she had gone to look for her.  I asked the nurse if my mom had been using the toilet, but she said that mom was just in her room.  I asked mom if she needed to go the toilet and she responded in the affirmative.  I took her to use the toilet.  She peed and pooped.  I noticed she wasn't wearing any underpants so I dressed her and put her pants in the laundry.
On the way back to dinner, mom noticed that the horses had been set up.  She seemed excited.
We had Salisbury steak, mashed potatoes, mixed veggies and apple crumble.  Yum!  We also had a few pieces of orange.  Mom ate everything.  I also gave her a couple of pieces of kombu that Aunti Sumi had brought.  Donna remembered that Aunti Sumi and Aunti Reiko had come to visit.
I took her back to the room, but she said she didn't have to use the toilet.
We went to the horse races.  Mom sat beside Anna and I seated Donna beside her, then Michael came and sat beside Donna.  Anna, mom and Michael all chose horse number 6.  It came in once.  Donna chose horse #5 and it came in first on the first race.  We cheered when someone rolled a 6 which made the game more exciting.
After the horse races, I took mom for a short walk around the enclosed grounds.  She enjoyed looking at the colourful flowers.  When we got back, I trimmed her bangs and then we looked at her photobook together.  Then we went to sit with Anna and Donna and Lorne by the nurses' station.  A nurse brought a chair for mom because another lady was sitting there, but the other lady left shortly after.

Tuesday 20 June 2017

Mom was wearing poopy pants

Tuesday, June 20, 2017
Mom seemed kind of upset.  Apparently the table wasn't set up properly.
I asked her if she wanted to go to the washroom.  At first she said yes, then she said she didn't have to go.  She had a good appetite.  We had baked fish, with rice and mixed veggies.  Dessert was a strawberry tart.  Mom ate everything.  We got some fresh orange sections as well.
She kept trying to eat her lemon wedge which I had already squeezed the juice out of.  I had to keep telling her it wasn't good.
After dinner we went to the washroom and I discovered that she was wearing poopy pants.  She had put tissues on her panties and it was all embedded in the poop.  Yuck!
I removed mom's soiled clothing.  I was at a loss as to what to do with the soiled underwear.  I found a plastic bag and put the underpants in there.  Moisture had seeped through her pants so I put those in the laundry basket. I left mom on the toilet and went to get help from the nurses' station, but they weren't very helpful.  I had to get back to mom quick just in case she got up from the toilet.
A nurse came and I told her I needed something to wipe mom's bum.  She brought me some disposable cloths which I sprayed with something called a moisture spray.  I got mom to clean herself and then I cleaned her bum.  I cleaned around the toilet and the sink. She was naked from the waist down so I got a quilt to wrap around her and got her dressed.  Then we washed out hands.
A care aide came to check on us.  Just then, Donna poked her head out of the washroom.  I could see she was having trouble with the diaper.  I had left the dirty underpants, wipes, etc. in the plastic bag on the floor of the washroom because there was no garbage can.  The care aide found them and I said to just throw everything in the garbage.  I'll have to buy mom some more pairs of underpants.
We went to play card bingo.  Barbara seems to be doing better.  She was playing card bingo.
Betty was sitting at our table.  She kept saying she didn't know what to do and she would rather not play.  I told her that we would help her.
Mom kept forgetting to turn the cards over.  She kept saying it was okay to leave them up.
I went to check mom's chair in the dining room.  It looked okay, but I gave it a wipe anyways.
After cards, I took mom back to the room to take a pee.  Then we went for a walk.  She was in a good mood.  She really enjoyed looking at the flowers.  The evening sunshine made the colours so intense.

Sunday 18 June 2017

Mom is confused

Sunday, June 18, 2017
We had reconstituted pork cutlets, mashed potatoes and gravy, mixed beans and lemon meringue pie.  Mom didn't eat her pie.  Mom's tummy looked rather large.
Jacquie had been to a bbq in the afternoon in the park.  They had come in to eat because of the rain and mom and Donna had joined them.  I found a leftover tart on mom's nightstand.
After dinner I took mom to use the toilet.
We read a little from mom's Japanese book.
We played cards with the regular gang.
Donna and Michael were trying to get Anna not to push and shout.
Anna likes to yell out Bingo!  But now, no one wants to say it.
They all enjoy playing card bingo.
After cards I took mom back to the room.  She thought she wanted to use the toilet, but nothing came out.  She seemed confused.  Poor mom.
Barbara was lying in bed.  They are bringing her pain killers.  I don't know what is wrong with her.

Saturday 17 June 2017

Saturday night card bingo

Saturday, June 17, 2017
Dinner was over when I arrived.  Mom and Donna were sitting at the nurses' station with Anna.
I asked mom if she had to use the toilet, but she said no.  I took her with me back to the room anyways.  When we got there, she told me she had to use the toilet.
When I flushed the toilet, I realized the toilet was clogged.
Mom said her underpants were soiled so I changed her underpants and her pants.  She was wearing the same shirt as yesterday.  She was wearing a pair of white socks with pink trim that I did not recognize. Her bangs are starting to look a little long.  She was wearing her ring.
I told one of the care aides, but she told me I had to tell the nurse at the nurses' station.
We had to play cards in the dining hall, because there was a party going on in the fish tank room.
I asked Anna to find Donna.  She found Donna and then she went to look for Michael.  Then, Michael came but no Anna.  Then Anna finally got there, but she had to go to the washroom.
Alan brought Shanta.
After cards, we went back to the room to use the toilet.
The toilet was repaired.
I left mom at the nurses' station with Anna and Donna.  Lorne was there and the new guy.

Friday 16 June 2017

Horse #6 wins!

Friday, June 16, 2017
Mom had already drank all her beverages and was starting on mine.  I went to her room to drop off my things before dinner.  I was surprised to see that mom had found her way back to the room as well.  She had to use the toilet.
She was excited to see the horses lined up for the races.  I told her that we had to have dinner first.
We had reconstituted bbq pork ribs, mashed potatoes with gravy and green and yellow beans.  Dessert was a delicious blueberry crumble cake.  Yum!
We all enjoyed our dinner.
Because of Father's Day coming up, there was a belly dancer at the afternoon social.  Jacquie said she missed it because she had business at Metrotown.  Donna and mom didn't seem to remember anything, but when I asked Edward, he just had a great, big smile on his face.
After dinner, mom went to the toilet again.  This time she pooped.
Horse racing was fun today because Anna, Michael, Donna and mom all chose the same horse and it came in.  Usually #2 wins.  Ming checked the die by asking one of the spouses to throw it six times, but each time it came up with a different number.  When the residents throw it, it often comes up 2.  It is a mystery.

Tuesday 13 June 2017

She wet her pants

Tuesday, June 13, 2017
Mom had consumed all her beverages and was working on mine when I arrived.  She didn't seem very happy when I reclaimed my milk and I had to get a new tea.  Funny.  Recently she hadn't been drinking tea.  She said it didn't taste good.
Baked fish, rice, carrots.  Fruit cobbler for dessert.
Edward didn't eat very much.  Mom ate everything.
I brought some Japanese pickled veggies: cucumbers and eggplant.
She ate them, but didn't seem to enjoy them too much.
I gave her some leftover broccoli as well.
Near the end of the meal, I had to take her to the toilet.
We came back and finished off our meal.
My hands were full so I asked her to carry my glass of milk, but she drank it.
Then, I asked her to carry a glass of apple juice.  I told her to just carry it.
We made it back to her room and then she polished that off too.
I had wanted to give her a couple of vitamin D pills.  I just gave her some water and she drank all that too.  She seemed to be thirsty today.
I was going through her drawers, but she was in the way so I moved her.  Mom said she wet her pants.  I was surprised because we had just used the toilet. We had to use a different washroom because Donna was in our washroom. Sure enough, mom had wet her pants a little.  I changed her into light blue pants and a light blue top.  It was an outfit that I had never seen her wear.  She looked good.
We looked through her photo book a bit and then it was off to card bingo.  Donna must have left while we were in the other bathroom.
Anna and Edward won bingo 2x each.
After bingo, mom wanted to use the toilet again!  She sat on the toilet and nothing happened and then she farted and peed.  She also did a small poop.
I think now I know why there are as many as 3 pairs of underpants in the hamper after one day.

Card night

Sunday, June 11, 2017
It was beef and macaroni casserole with mixed veggies.  Lemon meringue pie for desert.  Everyone seemed to enjoy the meal.  Mom ate her lemon meringue pie.
Took mom out for a quick walk after dinner with her walkman.  She sang.  She saw a man with a scowl and then she wanted to go back.
We played cards at the square table.  One of the residents watched us.  I asked him if he wanted to play, but he was content to watch.

Saturday 10 June 2017

Digestive biscuits

Saturday, June 10, 2017
Mom was in the bathroom.  They had chicken tonight and I missed it.
I helped mom wash her hands and comb her hair.
I took care of her laundry.  I found two digestive biscuits in one of mom's pockets.  I shared half of one cookie with mom and ate the rest.  That was my dinner.
We read a little from a Japanese children's book.
Then we went to play cards.
Anna arrived a little late as usual.  She always gets side-tracked.
Michael dealt the cards.  We had a good time.
Anna doesn't yell out bingo so loud any more.
The nurse told me that I should do the activity in a different location because they have bracelets that lock the door  and we were too near the door.  They used to have a round table by the fish tank that I used, but now they have a square table there that usually has to be cleaned.

Friday 9 June 2017

A ring

Friday, June 9, 2017
Dinner was served.  Everyone was there.   Ginger pork, rice, beans and carrots.  Dessert was Jello.
Everyone except Jacquie enjoyed their meal.  Jacquie ordered fish and extra for Peter the cat.
Mom was wearing a beaded ring.  It looked good on her.  The top area had diagonal bands of crystal and blue.  The bottom was gold-coloured.  It looked nice.  She also has her nails painted orange.
I asked her where she got it from and she said it was cheap and that she bought it.  Donna seemed to think she had won it.
I found a piece of garlic toast and a piece of cake wrapped in a napkin in mom's drawer.  I threw them in the garbage.
We played card bingo today instead of horse races.
After I put mom in her headset and took her for a walk.  We just walked outside within the grounds.  The gate is still locked.
When we got back, the curtain was drawn in mom's area.  The care aide was taking a break and talking on the phone.  I took mom to the toilet.  The soap dispenser was out and the paper towel dispensers still do not dispense automatically.  The toilet area smells strongly or urine.
I told the care aide and she said it would be reported.
Donna and Anna were sitting by the nurse's station.  There was another seat, but one of the resident's daughter was sitting there.  She should have offered to give up her seat for mom.  I took mom to sit with Shanta and Irma in the fish tank room.

Tuesday 6 June 2017

Balloon game again

Tuesday, June 6, 2017
Dinner was already served when I arrived.  Stuffed roast pork, mashed potatoes and gravy, beans.  Rice pudding for dessert.  Yum.  Edward hardly touched his meal.  Jacquie said that she had been singing outside with one of the new residents.  He's the guy that used to play the fiddle.  He has shaky hands now.  Donna said she was feeling better.
We went back to the room, but there was a line up for the washroom.  Donna was inside and Joan was waiting.  I took mom to the neighbour's washroom.
There were many pairs of underpants in the laundry basket.  I put them in the communal laundry basket.  I had mom try on her altered shirt.  It was still a little snug.  I added more than 3 inches.
Ming didn't have any volunteers today so he decided to play the balloon game.  I think the residents quite enjoy this activity.  They like to hit the balloon with a foam noodle.
After the game, I took the balloon to play with mom in the entrance hallway.  She laughed a lot.  It's good exercise for her.  I took her for a little walk too.  She enjoyed the colourful flowers.  We saw Shanta's son Alan outside watering the plants.  He said that he complained to Ming about the gate to the park being locked.  It's very inconvenient.

Sunday 4 June 2017

Donna's hurting

Sunday, June 4, 2017
Dinner was already served when I arrived.  Mom was almost finished her meal.  Fried drumsticks, mashed potatoes and gravy, cauliflower.  Apple crumble.
Jacquie was there.  She said that she had been outside and to the dog park.
She had picked a purple rose from the garden and put it on our dining table.
Mom asked to go to the bathroom suddenly.  We made it in time.
I put the head set on her and we went for a walk to the dog park.  Mom doesn't like to walk on dirt or grass.  She likes to keep to the concrete path.
She kept saying she was tired and wanted to sit down, but I took her all the way to end where we usually go.  I hope mom's okay.   She does drip, but I don't know if it the result of her medication or she has a cold.  Donna was saying that she felt achy.
We played cards.  At first Donna said she was in a lot of pain, but then she started playing.  Poor Donna.
Michael said that he was going on a cruise to Alaska in September.

Saturday 3 June 2017

Busted

Saturday, June 3, 2017
Everyone was at dinner today.  They were all seated and had already been served.  It was pork patties, mashed potatoes and gravy and mixed veggies.  Dessert was brownies.  Yum!
Everyone was enjoying their food.
Jacquie said that she had been in the hospital with pneumonia.
She said she had gone to happy hour on Friday and Donna and mom were there as well although they had no recollection of this.
After dinner we went back to the room.  I put mom's headset on her and folded her laundry.  Lots of pairs of underpants.  She doesn't fold her clothes anymore.
I took mom for a walk to the park.
The nurse told me that the gate to the park was locked because Michael had taken Donna and Mom to the dog park and they aren't allowed to leave the grounds. I took mom through the hospice.  It's a more round about way.  Michael and Donna have walkers so I don't know if they would be able to make it that way.
Mom was in a good mood and alert.  She pointed out a nice rose to me and we smelt it.  It was lovely.
We played cards.  As usual we had a good time.

Friday 2 June 2017

Mom unties balloon for me

Friday, June 2, 2017
Mom was happy and surprised to see me.
She wondered why she wasn't being served.
This was a good sign.  This meant she was hungry.
They had happy hour today.  Mom didn't seem to remember any of it.
We had lemon chicken, rice and beans.  Dessert was tapioca pudding.
Most ate most of her meal.  Although she said she didn't like the tapioca pudding, she ate it.
After dinner we went back to the room to use the toilet.
Mom's underwear was soiled so I had to change her.  She wasn't wearing diapers.
Donna came back in distress.  She said she felt sore all over.  The nurse put her to bed.
She was sneezing so I got her tissues out from the closet and gave her a glass of water.
I wonder if she caught a cold.
I took mom to play with foam sticks and balloons.  The residents are seated in a circle and they are given foam sticks which they use to hit balloons which are tossed their way by staff.  It's a good workout and the residents seem to enjoy it - except for Anna who decided she was going to take off. They are keeping an eye on her because they don't want her to fall again.  Anna came back to play.
After the game, I asked if I could have one of the balloons.  I took mom out to the entrance hall and Anna followed us.  I had them sit in chairs and then we passed the balloon between us.  Mom and Anna were having a gas.  Mom laughed so hard she peed herself and then she started coughing so I had to take her back to her room.
I had to return the balloon deflated, but I had trouble untying the knot.
Mom took it from me and untied the knot.
The nurse intercepted us because he wanted to weigh mom.  She weighs 59.8 kilos! 131 lbs.
I took mom back to the room and she took a pee.  I changed her underwear.  Gave her a tissue to blow her nose and gave her a some water and a couple of vitamin D pills.
I took her back out to the fish tank room to sit with Shanta.
