Mom is not eating her meals

Tuesday, May 30, 2017
Mom was sitting at the dinner table with Donna and Edward when I arrived.  She hadn't touched her dinner.  She wouldn't try anything.  I noticed that all her beverages were gone.  I think she gets full on the beverages and then she isn't hungry.
I hadn't had dinner so I ate half her food.  Not my favourite.  Ginger pork, rice and broccoli.  Carrot cake was good.
Donna said that Jacquie said that mom hadn't eaten her lunch either.  Mom insisted she had eaten something. but maybe that was at coffee time in the afternoon.
We went back to the room and I watered her plants, packed up her laundry, etc.  Forgot to check her toothbrush.
Tonight was card bingo with Ming.
Michael helped Shanta and mom with their cards.
Mom won a bag of Doritos.
Irma won a bag as well and shared it with others including me.
The gang was hanging out at the nurses' station.

Banana

Saturday, May 28, 2017
I arrived at 5:45 p.m.  Dinner was already finished.  I found mom standing in the doorway of the room.  Mom was wearing the same shirt as yesterday.  The velour "winter" top that her sisters from Japan had brought for her.  I changed her into a grey t-shirt.  It was really warm today.
I found one pair of soiled underpants in her hamper.
I brought some more clothes to be labeled to the nurses' station.
We played cards.  It was fun.  Mom needed prompting as did Donna.
Shanta gave me a banana.

Enjoying the sunshine

Friday, May 26th, 2017
Mom and Donna were hanging out by the nurses' station when I arrived at 3:45.
A man in a wheelchair joined them.  He remembered me from the choir performance.
I was flattered.  He said he used to play the fiddle.
I took mom to her room and we bumped into Barbara.  She wanted water for her roses.  I had to squeeze past her and then wheel her to her bed.  I got some water in a container for her.
I put the head set on mom and took her for a walk.
We met Santa and her son outside enjoying the sun.  He was putting coconut oil in her hair.
I took mom outside the gate and into the park.  I noticed that the gate was unlocked.
We saw Michael sitting in the park.  I guess he still remembers the combo if not to relock the gate.
We had a nice walk.
On the way back to her room we passed the horse racing set up.  Mom was excited.
I took mom to use the toilet.  She was wearing diapers.
She seemed fine.

Anna's keeper

Monday, May 22, 2017
Had dinner with mom.  We got served last.  Spaghetti with meat sauce, lettuce salad and pudding for dessert.  The server made a mistake with mom's dinner and gave her peas instead of lettuce.  I pointed it out so she brought mom some salad later.  I wanted mom to have fresh veggies too.  Mom has no trouble eating.  She forgets how to use a knife so she can't chop up her food.
Everyone enjoyed their meals.  Edward ate most of his meal and he didn't even add sugar.
After dinner I took mom to the washroom.  Today she was wearing a diaper, but no underpants.
I brought mom a pair of her old shoes.  It was a snug fit, but she says she liked them.  I should bring her some thongs.
I brought 3 pairs of pants and a t-shirt to be labeled.  The pants I got from Charlene.  I think they were hand me downs from one of her aunts.  The t-shirt was new.  I altered it for her (made it shorter).
I brought a couple of summer tops from last year, but only one fit her.  Actually it was snug, but she liked it.  I'll have to find new clothes and alter her shirt.  I can put side panels in for her.
I only had time to take mom for a short walk outside. We stayed inside the gates.  Mom enjoyed looking at the plants.
We played cards with the group.  We had fun.  One of the care aides told me that I had to notify her when Anna was finished.  Then another aide came and told me that I was to notify her when Anna was finished.  I guess they are keeping a close eye on her.  Maybe because she had the fall?
Mom was having a hard time.  Anna was getting impatient with her.  Poor mom.

Monday 22 May 2017

paper towel dispenser still doesn't work and still no garbage can

Sunday, May 21, 2017
Dropped by at lunch with C. to drop off some laundry.
Everyone was there except Jacquie.
They were eating a chicken(?) burger.
C. noticed that Edward had hardly touched his meal.
She chatted with the group while I went to mom's room to deposit the laundry.
Mom's tooth brush is missing again.  It had been replaced with a toothbrush that was missing earlier. I threw that one in the garbage and labeled a new toothbrush.
I came back again after dinner.  Mom and Donna had just returned to the room and Mom had just entered the washroom.  I followed her.  She had a pee and a bowel movement.  I worry about how she wipes herself.  I try to use a wet one and get her to wipe her bum again.
She is wearing diapers.  I forgot to check if they were soiled.  She doesn't need to wear a full diaper. She could wear a maxi pad or something.  She can use the toilet.  She just doesn't know how to find her room to get to it and isn't able to ask how to get there.
She argues with me about washing her hands.  She says they are clean and shows me.
I tell her that she must always wash her hands after she uses the toilet, but she probably won't remember.
The paper towel dispenser still doesn't work and there is no garbage can in the washroom.
And the other paper towel dispenser outside the washroom doesn't work either.
I can only guess no one washes their hands after using the toilet.
Anna's room is across the hall.  She wanted me to help her turn the television on, but it doesn't seem to work.
I put mom's headset on and we went for a walk in the park.  It was quite warm and we didn't need jackets.  Mom thought we were walking too far.  I took her to the playground and she smiled when I pointed out children playing and flowers.
The nurses don't want the residents to sit by the nurses' station.
They want the residents to stay in the fish tank room.
I had rounded up the usual suspects and noticed Donna was missing. A support staff was trying to engage another resident and Donna.  I got Anna to go and fetch Donna.  The support staff wanted me to invite the other resident, but I know she doesn't play card bingo with the regulars on Tuesday and suspect she probably can't.  And besides, I'm not staff.  I'm just trying to help my mom.
A support staff came to watch us.  A resident and his wife came to watch us.  The group is so intent when they are playing, others think we are playing poker or something.
If someone has already one twice, I put one of their cards at the bottom of the deck so that others have a change to win.  We played 8 games last night.

New guy at card bingo

Tuesday, May 16, 2017
Food wasn't served yet.  Jacquie wasn't there.  Donna said she wasn't there at lunch either.
I sat in Jacquie's place across from mom and beside Donna.
We had breaded baked fish with rice and carrots.  Dessert was fruit cobbler.  We shared an orange.
I put the head set on mom while I tidied up her area.
Mom is so cute!
Mom is wearing her Sketchers slip on shoes now.  I'll have to get her another pair for the winter.
Her feet are probably fatter now too.
We played card bingo.  There was a new guy today.  He teased Anna and she was offended.  She left the table and then came back saying something about going to the washroom.
Barbara played card bingo today.
Michael and Edward both won two bags of potato chips.
After the activity, the girls sat near the nurses' station.  So cute!

Sunday 14 May 2017

Mother's Day

Sunday, May 14, 2017
Dinner was already served when I arrived.  Jacquie wasn't there.
Edward poured sugar over his meal.  It was beef and macaroni, mixed veggies and lemon meringue pie for dessert.  Mom ate everything except for a little of the beef and macaroni.  We shared half an orange.
I found something stinky wrapped in paper napkins in mom's closet.  I threw it in the garbage.
I put the headset on mom and took her to the dog park.  We had a nice walk.
We played cards with the gang.
It was fun.

Saturday 13 May 2017

Cards again.

Saturday, April 13, 2017
They were sitting and eating when I arrived.  Mom was back in her old seat again.
Jacquie still has a cold.  Today she decided that society needed to go back to using titles again and not being so informal.  She said young people have no respect.
Baked chicken, mashed potatoes with gravy and Brussels sprouts.  Dessert was bread pudding.
Mine was served late so I had to wolf down my food.  I peeled an orange for mom, Donna and Edward.  The new lady cuts the oranges, but it still is not easy for arthritic fingers to peel and eat.
Paper towel dispensers still don't work properly.
Barbara had a potted rose plant and Joan had an orchid.
I watered mom's orchid and her African violet.
Lots of laundry.  I think mom was washing her own underwear again.
She was wearing a diaper again today. It was slightly soiled so I removed it.
I put some photos up for her.
She didn't recognize her brother, Takashi, in the photo.
We played cards.  They are pretty focused.  They enjoy it.
Anna still looks pretty bad.  Her hand is bruised.  She still has a band-aid on her nose.

Thursday 11 May 2017

Choir performance

Thursday, May 11, 2017
The table arrangement had changed.  Mom and Donna were sitting beside each other and Jacquie and Edward were sitting beside each other.  They were having lasagne for dinner.  I was performing tonight with the choir so we were having a warm up.
Poor Anna had fallen on her face.  She says her knees were also injured.  She had a big band aid on her nose.
We performed at 6:00 p.m.
Some of the audience was nodding off.  Shanta was asleep for most of the performance.  I saw Michael and mom nod off.  Donna and Jacquie managed to stay awake.
Mom even clapped sometimes.
At the end I gave her a hug and she told me to come again in Japanese.

Tuesday 9 May 2017

Toothpaste is back

Tuesday, May 9, 2017
Jacquie joined us for dinner tonight.  We had a stuffed pork roast with gravy, mashed potatoes and beans.  Edward hardly touched his meal.  He did eat some of his rice pudding.
Mom ate her whole dinner.  She had smaller portions.  She didn't even try her rice pudding.
I peeled an orange that I got from Shanta on Friday.  It was still good.  I shared it with mom, Edward and Donna.
Edward did a large, fake flower arrangement and it was displayed on the dining table.  I couldn't see Donna on the other side.  She called it a forest.  Edward was proud of his creation.  He was grinning ear to ear.
Towards the end of the meal, I noticed mom was a little tense so I asked her if she had to go to the washroom.  She did so we got up and left the table.  When we got back, my rice pudding and tea was still there.  Mom had forgotten that we had already eaten.  She thought that dishes had been left on the table.  Soon she forgot that too and was eating a piece of orange.
After dinner I saw Barbara still sitting at her table so I offered to push her back to the room.  She said that she would wait for an aide, but I pushed her back anyways.
Mom's toothpaste was back.  After I got home Sunday night I had recalled that I hadn't seen mom's toothpaste for a few days.  I put a new tube in her drawer, but her other toothpaste had reappeared.
Ming is back from vacation.  He said he was only gone a week, but it seemed longer.
We played card bingo.  I seated mom first and then went to find Donna.  She was in the room so I told her to go to the fish tank room and sit beside mom.  When I joined mom, I didn't see Donna.  Turned out Donna was sitting across from her.  Mom was saving the seat for me.  Luckily it wasn't a full house so I could sit beside her.  Mom and Donna both won a bag of potato chips.
I saw Sam for the first time in a long time.  Anna and Sam sat together.
After the game, I pushed Shanta to the television room.  Alan wasn't there today.  Donna called mom to join her.  Donna calls her "Reeko."  They went to stash their winnings.
Mom, Anna and Donna were sitting at the nurses' station with two other ladies in wheelchairs when I got back from depositing Shanta in the television room.

Sunday 7 May 2017

Mom's red comb came back

Sunday, May 7, 2017
Mom, Donna and Edward were already halfway through their meals.  Jacquie wasn't there.  Baked chicken legs, mashed potatoes and gravy, mixed veggies and apple crumble for dessert.  Yum!
Barbara was back from the hospital.  She was lying in bed with the television very loud.  Donna went to complain.  I think she was able to negotiate a little.
I put the headset on mom and started organizing her things.  Her red comb has come back!
She pooped her pants.  It looked like it was runny.  She tried to wipe up with tissue paper and put them in the laundry basket too.
Sometimes I wonder about mom wiping herself properly.  I hope it is a reflex that won't go away.  I hope she wipes front to back.
We played cards.  Even though I told everyone 6 p.m., they waited early around 5:30 and then got bored and walked away.  Donna was just coming back when I arrived.  Shanta was wheeled in by her son about 5 minutes early.  He apologized.  He said she insisted they go early.  The rest of the gang came by.  Anna was last.  Everyone had a good time.

Friday 5 May 2017

Barbara was taken away in an ambulance

Friday, May 5, 2017
Everybody was seated with their meals when I arrived.  My favourite.  Lemon chicken, beans and rice.  Dessert was tapioca pudding.  Delicious.
The kitchen staff had forgotten me, but I reminded them.
Mom and I shared an orange.
It was happy hour today.  Jacquie said she had a drink.
I'll have to come to happy hour one day.
I told her that our choir was coming to sing next week and that we would be singing Land of the Silver Birch and My Paddle's Keen and Bright.  Jacquie is looking forward to singing with us.  She was in girl guides and is familiar with My Paddle's Keen and Bright.
After dinner when we went back to the room, ambulance attendants were getting Barbara ready to be loaded onto a gurney.
Mom was wearing diapers again today.
I noticed the garbage can was missing from the washroom.
I put the ear phones on mom while I sorted her laundry and drawers.
I noticed that she had an extra toothbrush and put it by the sink.
I got mom to comb her hair at the back because it was messy.  I trimmed her bangs because they were getting long.
Ming is still not here.  I played card bingo with the gang.  Shanta gave me an orange.  She asked me where Anna was sitting.  I put her opposite Shanta.

Changing places

Tuesday, May 2, 2017
Edward was sitting opposite Donna and I sat opposite mom.
The support staff was concerned that meals would not be distributed correctly.
Edward had his Ensure so I think that was the only difference.
Jacquie wasn't there today.
We played card bingo with our usual small group.
Usually Ming leads the large group, but he wasn't there.  Maybe he's on vacation.
