Chrysanthemums

Saturday, March 31, 2018
Mom and Donna were sitting at the dining table when I arrived.  Edward came walking in shortly after.  The aide told me that mom had just had a big poop.
Mom was in a very good mood.  She was singing.  I sang some of my choir songs and she sang her songs.  I didn't see Jacquie today.  Yesterday she told me that she was trying to quite smoking.  She had a big bag of gummies with her.
Mom ate most of her food.  I gave her half an orange.  She chewed and chewed and eventually swallowed all the fibrous bits.  It was stuck in her teeth too.
Donna was having trouble with her cutlery too.  At one point she grabbed her chicken thigh with both hands and took a bite, but then put it to the side.  Maybe it was overcooked.
Edward is very good with the knife and he loves chicken.
Mom ate most of her food.  But she likes oranges the best.  She even gets excited when she sees the peel.  I have to explain that it just a peel and she can't eat it.
After dinner I took mom  back to the room to brush her teeth, wash her face, and toilet her.
She wasn't in a wheelchair today.
Then we went to collect Donna and go and play cards.  Michael was waiting for us in the fish tank room.  Joe joined us too.
After the game, I tried to take photos of mom and Donna.
I bought chrysanthemums for mom and Donna.

Walk with Jacquie

Friday, March 30, 2018
I saw Jacquie at the skytrain station.  We walked together to the home.  She's in a motorized wheelchair and has trouble negotiating the uneven sidewalks and walkways.  With all the construction going on at the skytrain station, she has to take detours.
Mom was being toileted when I arrived at 4:35pm.  Hurray!  I pushed her in her wheelchair to join Donna at the dinner table.  Jacquie arrived and then Edward arrived being pushed in his walker.  He was all smiles.  Mom was served first.  I put the spoon in her food and she was able to feed herself with cueing.  Donna was having some difficulty so I chopped up her fish for her.  Donna sounded kind of phlegmy.  She still has her cold and she seems kind of disoriented.  She was having some trouble feeding herself, but she persevered.
I gave mom some orange sections from the orange I peeled for her.  She tried to stuff sections in her mouth before she had finished chewing the fibrous bits.  I had to make her wait.  It's funny that she used to spit out the membrane, but now she swallows it.  She ate most of her food.  I put the orange peels on her plate, but then she tried to put them on her spoon and eat that too.  I tried to explain that they were orange peels and not for eating.  She enjoyed her pudding and ate it herself.
After dinner, I took mom back to the room to brush her teeth, wash her face and toilet her.
We looked at her photo book together. She always enjoys that.
I walked her back to Donna and seated her with Anka.

Donna is still sick

Wednesday, March 28, 2018
Mom was feeding herself when I arrived.  It's the minced food.  She seemed happy.
She was in a wheelchair.
The aide told me that mom had a big poo.
I gave mom some orange, but she seemed to have a little difficulty eating it.  She also gets the orange fibre stuck in her teeth.
She really liked her pudding.  I gave her some of my chicken and my orange cake.
After dinner I took mom back to the room and brushed her teeth, washed her face, toileted her.  Her diaper was clean.  We left the wheelchair in the room.
The nurse hooked Donna up to some machinery.  Donna is sick and had been given antibiotics.  Donna played cards with us.
We played cards in the fish tank room.  The television was noisy, but it was okay.  Joe joined us.
Chris took a selfie with mom.
After the game we sat mom and Donna with Zorka and Anka.

Sunday 25 March 2018

Donna is sick.

Sunday, March 25, 2018
Mom was sitting with Donna when I arrived, but I took her away to toilet her.  Her diaper was wet so I changed it.  She took a little poop which she scooped out of her bum with toilet paper.
Mom had minced food for dinner.  Hers was served first.  She ate all the veggies and some of the mashed potato with gravy and some of the ham.  I tried the ham and it was gross.  I gave mom some of my scalloped potatoes and I gave her some orange sections.  She drank some Ensure and all of her milk.  After dinner she took another pee.
I signed the waiver form regarding the solid food.
I tidied up her drawer and closet.  Combed her hair and brushed her teeth.
I brought in the green pants from Auntie Sumi and striped green t-shirt from me to be labeled.
A doctor came to check Donna.  She had a fever and she had thrown up earlier.  The aide said she was going on her break and then she would put Donna to bed.
I went to play cards with Michael and Shanta.  Mom was able to participate and enjoy the game, although she became frustrated from time to time.  When we got back, half an hour later, Donna was still sitting in her wheelchair.  Poor Donna.
I took mom to sit with Anka by the nurses station.
Mom is not in a wheelchair.  In the morning mom complains that her legs hurt or something like that.
They are giving her Tylenol.

Anxiety

Friday, March 23, 2018
I'm worried about mom.  I hope she won't be mistreated by the the nurses and care aides because I mentioned that she had poop under her fingernails.  Poor mom is getting worse.  She's in a wheelchair, not because she can't walk, but because she fell a few weeks ago.  She's in diapers, not because she is incontinent, but because she can't go to the toilet by herself.  She's eating minced food, not because she can't chew, but because she's forgotten how to use cutlery.  What can I do?

Wednesday 21 March 2018

Mom has minced food

Wednesday, March 21, 2018
An aide was sitting with mom when I arrived.
She had a plate of minced food and she was sitting in a wheelchair.
The nurse told me that they had tried to toilet mom, but that mom was angry.
She also told me that the dietitian had prescribed minced food because she was concerned that mom couldn't swallow.
I told her that I had just come back from cleaning poop from the toilet seat in mom's room.
I had also taken clothes from her laundry basket and noted that her underwear had some poop on it.  I threw them in the communal laundry hamper.
I sat with mom and put food on her spoon and put the spoon in her hand.  She ate it, but as soon as the nurse came by, mom refused the food.
I continued to to put food in mom's spoon and put her hand on the spoon and mom ate.  I gave her some of my oven roasted potatoes because they tasted good and she ate them.  I noticed she didn't have any orange sections which are her favourite.
The nurse said that I could sign a waiver so that mom could eat food that was not minced.
Poor mom.  I gave mom her apple sauce, but she didn't seem to like it.  She liked my apple crisp so I gave her a few spoonfuls of that.
After dinner, I toilet mom.  Her diaper was full of pee.  She did a couple of poops.
I brushed her teeth.
I walked her back to the dining room to play cards.  It was the usual group.  Mom kept forgetting what to do, but she was mostly engaged.  She even picked out a card that I hadn't noticed.
Chris asked where mom's wheelchair was.  He felt we should keep her in the chair just in case she fell.  Donna wanted to go back to the room.  I think she wanted to poop.  I pushed the call button for her, but I didn't see anyone respond.  I wheeled mom into the fish tank room.

Mom has poop in her fingernails

Sunday, March 18, 2018
Everyone except Jacquie was seated at the dining room table.  Mom was sitting in a wheelchair again. Mom was not interested in her food.  I could smell poop.  I noticed that her nails looked dirty, then I realized that she had poop under her fingernails!  Yikes!  On the way to her room I told the nurse.  I asked her if she had a fingernail brush.  Nope.  She said I should soak mom's nails.  I was pretty sure mom needed a diaper change as well.  Mom was in a wheelchair and she couldn't reach her hands to the sink.  I put some warm water and soap in a paper cup and soaked her fingers.  She was not happy about getting her hands soapy.  Then I got a paper towel and cleaned under the fingernails.  Mom said it hurt.  Once I had her nails relatively clean, I took her to the toilet.  She had poop in her diaper.  I had trouble getting mom to sit on the toilet.  Then she was upset because her diaper was poopie.  I had trouble trying to keep her hands away from the dirty diaper.  Somehow I got it off.  She was trying to stick her hand in her bum again.  I got small towels and soaked them in warm water and wrung them out.  Then I wiped her but.  There was more poop coming out.  I think I used 5 towels.  Mom was calmer once I removed most of the poop.  Then I had to put on a clean diaper, wash her hands, etc.
We got back to the dining table just in the nick of time.  Our dinners were still there.
Jacquie came late so she ate with us.  I told Jacquie what had happened.  I put food in mom's spoon and placed her hand on the spoon and she was mostly able to feed herself, but she needed a lot of cueing.  She likes oranges, but they always get stuck in her teeth.
I think mom's lost weight. Poor mom.
I took mom back to the room, brushed her teeth, washed her face, etc.
Then we played cards with Michael, Shanta and Donna.  Mom and Donna were engaged and playing.
Sometimes mom got confused so I would just flip the card for her.  Sometimes she would be impatient and asked me if she could flip a card.
After cards, I brought Anka over to join mom and Donna at the table to wait for hot cocoa.

Wednesday 14 March 2018

Mom won't get up from the chair

Wednesday, March 14, 2018
Mom was just staring at her dinner.  I put some food on a spoon and placed her hand on the spoon.  She ate it.  When I got back from putting my stuff in her closet, she was eating with her hands.
I put the food on her spoon and placed her hand on the spoon and she started eating with her spoon again.  She ate most of her food and seemed to enjoy it.  She really likes her orange sections.  She and Donna get half a sliced orange each.
Mom liked her strawberry tart too.
Mom kept saying that she was not very good.  She knows she can't do stuff.
After dinner I toileted mom.  Her diaper was fairly clean, but I changed it anyways.
I combed her hair.  Not too tangled today.  Brushed her teeth.  Washed her face.  Applied Vaseline to her dry forehead.
Donna did not want to play cards today.  Shanta didn't want to play too long.  I think she needed a diaper change.  Mom had trouble at first, but eventually she participated.  She keeps her hands on her lap.  I have to move her hands to her cards.
After cards, mom didn't want to get up from the table.  I went to get her wheelchair, but by then she had gotten up.  I wonder what is wrong with mom.  I should check on what medication they are giving her.
The nurse said that she was getting Aricept at night, but now it is being administered in the morning.
I think it's because mom walks around at night.  Probably she just needs to go to the washroom.

Mom's in a wheelchair again

Tuesday, March 13, 2018
Mom is in a wheelchair again.  The nurse said that mom was walking around at night.  She said mom said her legs hurt.  I helped mom with her meal.  I put food on the spoon and put her hand on the spoon and then she could more or less feed herself.  It requires constant monitoring and cueing, but she can feed herself.  I think it is just easier for the aides to feed her.  Jacquie said that mom would just start storing food in her cheek instead of swallowing.  Yikes!
Mom ate most of her meal.  Beef stew, mashed potatoes, peas and carrots and Nanaimo bar for dessert.  Yum!
I toileted mom.  She had a poop.  I changed her diaper because it was wet.  Combed her hair, wiped her face, applied Vaseline, brushed her teeth, etc.
Mom played card bingo with Ming and the other residents.  Shanta won a bag of potato chips which she gave to Michael.
Mom's ginger cat is missing.

Sunday 11 March 2018

Donna doesn't want to play

Sunday, March 11, 2018
I arrived at about 5:15.  Mom had eaten a bit of dinner with help.  I cued her by filling her spoon with food and then guiding her hand to it.  She ate most of her food.  She ate the orange sections by herself.  She held the section in her hands, holding back the peel and ate the fruit.
Roast beef with gravy, mashed potatoes and mixed veggies.  Lemon meringue pie for dessert. Yum!
After dinner, I toileted mom.  She took a small poop.  I washed her face, put Vaseline on the dry spots, brushed her teeth, etc.  I remembered to water her African violet.
We played card bingo with 12 cards each today.  Donna didn't want to play.  She wanted to sit and chat with Joe and Anka.
I had to keep placing mom's hands on the cards to cue her to turn them over.
After cards I sat mom with the gang at the nursing station.

Saturday 10 March 2018

Mom is forgetting how to use utensils

Saturday, March 10, 2018
I arrived shortly after 5:30.  Mom was still at the table being fed by an aide.  Once I arrived, she left.  I put food on the fork and then placed mom's hand on the handle.  She started to eat with the fork.  I think mom forgets she has hands.  They had cabbage rolls, beets, a bun and chocolate cake.  Looked good.  Mom ate everything except for the bun.  She ate her most of her orange too.  She liked the apple juice, but not the milk.  She drank some anyways.
There was poop in the toilet.  Mom's diaper was clean.  I wonder if she went to the toilet by herself.  She took a pee.  I brushed her teeth, washed her face, put some Vaseline on her dry spots.  She has a red spot on her neck.  I forgot to water her plant.
We played cards with the usual group.  Alan parked his mom a little too fast and hit her foot.  She was mad!
Mom was able to flip cards.  I had to bring her hand to the card and then she seemed to know what to do.

Wednesday 7 March 2018

More confused and lethargic than usual

Wednesday, March 7, 2018
Dinner was roast chicken, roasted potatoes, Italian veggies and apple crumble.  Yum!
Mom ate all her veggies and her half an orange and 2/3 of Donna's half an orange.  She tried a little of the apple crumble.  She told me that she wasn't very good.
No Jacquie at dinner today.
Edward was busily cutting up his chicken leg.  He was happy.  He likes chicken.
Mom was given cut up pieces of chicken.
I told mom to get up, but she didn't seem to understand.  I pushed Donna's wheelchair and I motioned for her to join us and she finally got up.  We left Donna at the nurses station.
I took mom back to her room and toileted her.  She took a pee.  I changed her diaper because there were some poop stains.  I wiped her bum.  She said it hurt.
We washed our hands together.  I brushed her teeth,  I got her to comb the tangle out of her hair.  I put some Vaseline on the left side of her face and some on her neck because it was dry.
We went to play cards.  We played in the dining area.  Chris joined us.  There was no balloon activity today.  Chris noticed that mom was and Donna were more confused and lethargic today.  He wondered if their medication had been changed.

Monday 5 March 2018

Light over sink is now working

Sunday, March 5, 2018
Mom and Donna were just getting up from the dinner table when I arrived.  Edward and Jacquie had already left and the table had already been cleared.  I dropped Donna off at the nurses station and took mom back to the room to toilet her.  She did 3 poops.  I changed her wet diaper.  Combed her hair, brushed her teeth, etc.
I got the gang organized for card bingo: Michael, Shanta, Donna and mom.
After the game I returned mom and Donna to the nurses station.

Thursday 1 March 2018

Hitting balloons with foam batons

Wednesday, February 28, 2018
Mom, Donna, Edward and Jacquie were already seated when I arrived.  Mom had already eaten half her dinner.  We had baked chicken, rice, Italian mixed veggies and a Nanaimo bar.  Yum!
Mom ate her half an orange and was eyeing Donna's.  She ate all her Nanaimo bar.
I took mom back to the room to toilet her.  I changed her diaper because it was wet. I brushed her teeth, combed her hair.  Red comb is still missing.
Her knee doesn't seem to be bothering her at all.
Mom and Donna played the balloon game while Shanta, Michael and I played cards.  Chris joined mom playing balloons.  Zorka asked Chris to help her stand, but this was a no-no.
Chris didn't have kick boxing tonight so we stayed a little longer than usual.  After cards, I joined mom and Chris hitting the balloon with a foam noodle.
