Michael is leaving.

Wednesday, January 31, 2018

Everyone was there eating at the dining table.  Mom wasn't sure what to do.  I put a fork in her food and she started eating.  We had baked chicken, rice and mixed Italian veggies.  Dessert was orange cake.  It tastes like a creamsicle.  Yum! Mom ate about half her meal, her pieces of orange and one spoonful of orange cake.  She also ate part of the orange peel.  I wonder if she usually eats the peel if I am not there.

When I went to mom's room, I noticed the smell of poop.  I couldn't figure out where it was coming from.  Then, I found it sitting on mom's night table, a poopy diaper.  I disposed of it.  After dinner I toilet mom.  I changed her clothes because there were stains that I suspected were pee or poop.  There was poop caked on her bum.  I used two warm towels to wipe her bum.  I noticed some red streaks, that might be sores.  I finished off with the usually paper towel and moisturizing spray.

The care aide said I should mention to the nurse that mom had dried poop on her bum.  She said that she should have been checked earlier.

I combed mom's hair, wiped her face and brushed her teeth.

We played card bingo in the kitchen with Michael, Donna and mom.  Chris was there too.
Michael told us that he was leaving tomorrow to go to White Rock to live on his own.  I was in disbelief.  We will miss him.  Now, there is no one to play cards with.  I will have to find a new activity.

Tuesday 30 January 2018

New roomie

Tuesday, January 30, 2018
Everyone was seated and eating when I arrived.  Mom had consumed my apple juice.  She was eating her baby potatoes with her hand.  I put a fork in her plate and she started using the fork.  Someone had poured a tea for her, but mom said I could have it.  We had fish, baby potatoes, and mixed veggies.  Dessert was a turnover.  Mom ate everything.  I gave extra fish to mom and Edward.  Mom ate the fish without complaining.  I told Edward that I was helping him to get fat since he had lost 15 lbs.  I gestured this mainly as I don't think he can hear me.  Donna blew her nose in her bib and then she blew her nose in her napkin.
After dinner we left Donna at the nurses' station.  I was going to give Donna a tissue, but there was none to be found.
I toileted mom.  She peed and pooped.  I changed her diaper.  Her hair was fluffy because she gets her shower on Tuesdays. I brushed her teeth.  Today there was less blood and she didn't have any food trapped between her teeth.
Mom has a new roommate.  I think her name was Zorka or something like that.  She said she was Italian, but born in Canada.
Ming was running a card bingo game.  Mom kept telling me to watch her cards.  She was confused about turning the cards over.  They all enjoy the game.

Mystery of missing cutlery

Sunday, January 28th, 2018
Mom and Donna were seated at the dining table when I arrived.  Mom had finished off all her  beverages and my apple juice.  Coffee and tea had not yet been served.  Suddenly mom told me she had to go to the washroom.  We made it mostly in time.  As mom was pulling her pants down, she dropped some cutlery wrapped in a napkin.  She had a pee and a poop.  I changed her diaper.  We went back to the table.  Edward, Donna and Jacquie had already been served.  I told the kitchen I needed new cutlery.  We had sweet and sour pork, rice, beans and fruit cocktail.  Mom ate most of her meal except for the beans.  She ate her half and orange.  She kept saying she couldn't possibly finish it, but she did while Donna and I waited for her.
We left Donna at the nurses' station while I took mom for another pee.  I brushed her teeth too.  She had a piece of pork stuck in her teeth.  She is often picking at her teeth.  Poor mom.
Jacquie said that the singer did not show up for the birthday tea as there was a sudden family emergency.  She also said that Barbara had had a stroke and then passed away.

Arm Exercises

Saturday, January 27, 2018
Mom and Donna were sitting at the nurses' station when I arrived.  I took mom to her room and toileted her.  Her diaper was clean.  I brushed her teeth.  There was some bleeding.  I don't know if it's her gums or her teeth, but she is on the list to see the dentist.  I noticed she picks at her teeth after meals.  Especially after eating oranges.
I took mom for a little walk while Donna was being toileted.  I found out that arm exercises was starting at 12:45.  An episode of the Crown was being shown at 1:30.
Mom participated in the hand and arm exercises.  She seemed happy.  She wasn't quite following directions and I tried to help her.  She's so cute.
Dropped off a box of tissues at the nursing station.

Wednesday 24 January 2018

Flashy blue ring

Wednesday, January 24th, 2018
Everyone was seated when I arrived.  Again mom was saying she wasn't hungry, but started eating when everyone else was eating.  She ate her orange sections early on in the meal.  I had to show her that she didn't eat the skin, just the inside.  She polished almost everything off her plate.  I gave her a little bite of the apple crisp and the last of the milk.
Jacquie was wearing a flashy blue ring.  Very nice.  Mom also has a nice blue beaded ring.
We had pork roast with gravy, oven-roasted fries, Italian mixed veggies and apple crisp.
While we were chatting, one of the aides must have taken Donna away.  We were all wondering what happened to Donna.  We found her in the fish tank room.  Donna said she would rather be at the nurses' station so we took her there.
I noticed that the toilet had been used and there was a poop in it.  Mom must have gone to the toilet by herself.  She peed a little on the floor.  I took her for a pee and cleaned her bum. Her diaper was clean.
We went to play card bingo.  Chris came.  We just played for half an hour because Chris had to leave at 6:30.  We left mom and Donna in the fish tank room.

Mom wins a bag of Dorito's

Tuesday, January 24, 2018
Mom, Donna and Edward were seated at the table.  Mom had drank all her beverages and my juice.  She had been served first, but was not eating.  I think she's forgotten how to use her cutlery.  She says she isn't hungry.  My food comes and I start eating.  I put the fork in her potatoes.  I tell her to use her hand to pick up her fork. Eventually she starts to eat.  She eats most of her food.  I get her to eat a couple of pieces of sausage.  She eats her orange sections, but she's unsure what to do with the peel.  I peel the orange for her.  Then, she becomes interested in her cherry tart.  I spoon out a cherry for her.  She tries to copy me, but she only gets sauce.  I feed her the rest of her tart.
Edward is quiet as usual.  No more funny stories.
Dinner was beef sausage, scalloped potatoes, broccoli and a cherry tart.  Yum!
Michael stops by to tell me that he will play card bingo with the big group today.
After dinner, we drop Donna off in the fishtank room seated at the activities table to play card bingo.
I toilet mom.  I change her diaper.  She does a poop!  Her pants are wet so I change her.  I brush her teeth.  Soon it's time to play card bingo.  Mom has difficulty.  I help her.  She is very happy and proud to match a card, but then she is confused about what to do next.  We all tell her to turn it over.  Mom wins a game and is presented with a box of chips.  I pick out the Dorito's because I know that is her favourite.

Sunday 21 January 2018

Quarantine has been lifted.

Sunday, January 21, 2018
Mom and Donna were already seated at the dining table when I arrived at 4:05.  They were chatting about something.  Juice and milk had been served.
It looks like the quarantine has been lifted and things are getting back to normal.
Edward came by to join us shortly.  He was talkative today.  I was surprised.  First he asked me how to get fat.  He said his doctor told him that he had lost 15 pounds and he needed to gain weight.  Then he told us how he had lost his watch.  He looked for it for two days.  Then he found it in a shoe.  He thinks a mouse put it there.
Donna had her fingernails painted black.  It looked good on her.
Jacquie joined us for dinner today.  We enjoyed turkey with mashed potatoes and gravy and peas.  Dessert was banana cream pie.  Yum!
I told Jacquie I had to leave early today because I had a country two step class.  Donna was dawdling with her napkin so she took it from her.  I got mom to wheel Donna to the nurses' station.  Donna said she needed a tissue so I reminded her that I had just given her one.  It was up her sleeve because she had no pockets.
I took mom back to the room and toileted her.  She did a poop and her diaper was clean.  Hurray!  I brushed her teeth and then brought her back to sit with Donna before I left.
I gave Ailene two clementines and she was very happy.

Wednesday 17 January 2018

Donna doesn't feel well

Wednesday, January 17, 2018
Mom, Donna and Edward were already seated when I arrived.  Mom had consumed her beverages.  She didn't seem to have an appetite.  She was very interested in her orange segments.  She wasn't sure about the orange peels so I demonstrated how to remove them.  I helped her with her fork and spoon, but she really didn't seem to be interested in the food.
We had chicken stir fry on rice and carrots.  Dessert was a cherry tart.  Mom ate a few pieces of chicken and carrot.  I asked her several times if she had to go to the washroom, but she said she was fine.
After dinner we took Donna back to the room.  She said she was tired and coming down with something.  I told the nurse so she came to check on Donna.  The nurse assured me that there was no sign of the flu on my mom's wing of the building.
I did the usual toileting, combing of hair, brushing of teeth, etc.  Then I took mom to the dining area and Chris was there so we sat with him while he ate his dinner.
We played cards in the kitchen area.  I took mom back to the room and Donna was waiting in the doorway.  Chris pushed her out to the nurses' station while I toileted mom again.

Runny nose

Tuesday, January 17, 2018
Mom, Donna and Edward were seated when I arrived.  Mom had already drank all her beverages except her tea.  I got served last.  Mom kept saying she wasn't hungry and couldn't possibly eat her food or something like that.  I don't think she knew what to do.  I tried to feed her, but she refused.  After my food came, I put a fork in her mashed potatoes and pork stew and tried again.  She was more responsive and eventually she started to use the utensils to eat her dinner.  I was worried that maybe she had to go to the washroom, but she said it wasn't necessary.  Mom enjoyed her orange sections.  She tried to eat her orange with a fork so I peeled it for her and removed a section.  After she was fine.  She ate those and then started back to her main meal.  She ate most of her meal except for her bun.
Donna's nose was quite runny.  She was blowing it in her bib.
I really enjoyed the Nanaimo bar.
After dinner, mom wheeled Donna back to the room.  I helped Donna get her tissue paper.  I toileted mom.  Her diaper had a poop streak, but otherwise was fine.  I changed her diaper, wiped her bum, etc.  She had had her shower today so her hair looked good.  I combed it.  I brushed her teeth.  She tries to pick her teeth because the orange fibres get stuck in them.  We went through mom's photobook.
Then we went to play cards with Michael.  He was in the television room.  The woman who cleans the floors doesn't like us to be there.  She has a certain way she cleans the floors.  She suggested we go into the chapel to play.  It took a bit of muscle, but she helped me moved a table and I moved the chairs.  Michael played two hands because we only had four players.  He likes that.
I had to leave at 6:30 so I had to wrap up earlier than usual.

Sunday 14 January 2018

Mom's nails are getting long

Sunday, January 14, 2018
When I arrived around 4:00 p.m., mom and Donna were sitting at the nurses' station with Anka, Joe and another man (I forgot his name).  I took mom away so I could toilet her.  I changed her diaper.  She had a small bowel movement.  She tries to touch stuff with poop on it like her diaper and toilet paper.  Yikes!  Her hair wasn't matted.  She had a stain on the front of her top.  There were a lot of clothes in her laundry basket, but I don't know if they were dirty.  I just put them in the communal hamper.  I read her the Country Mouse and the City Mouse and she tried to read along.  We looked at her photo book.  The two oranges that were leftover were still there so I told her to eat one.  She peeled it and then seemed confused so I told her to eat it. I gave her a bean cake, but she said she didn't want it.  Then it was time to go for dinner.
I talked to Michael briefly.  I told him that I had a country 2-step dance lesson and couldn't play card bingo but that for sure I would play Wednesday.  I think I may even have time on Tuesday.  I didn't think about Tuesday before because I forgot about the quarantine.
Donna was already seated.  Edward came by shortly after.  I helped serve them their beverages.  I told them about what I was doing the last few days.  I helped mom, Donna and Edward with their bibs.  Edward was very grateful.
We had roast beef with gravy, mashed potatoes, 4 kinds of veggies and Boston Cream pie for dessert.  Yum! Mom mushed up her food and ate maybe half.  At first she didn't know what to do, but I put some food on a fork and fed it to her.  Mom ate her two orange sections although Donna scolded her for eating her orange before finishing dinner.  I gave mom a couple of spoonfuls of the Boston Cream pie even though she only ate half of her dinner.
After dinner mom wheeled Donna to the nurses' station and I took mom back to the room to toilet her, brush her teeth, wipe her face, etc.  I took mom back to the nurses' station to sit with Donna.
I'll have to cut mom's nails next time.

Wednesday 10 January 2018

Shanta is in the hospital

Wednesday, January 10, 2018
Mom, Donna and Edward were seated and served when I arrived.  Mom didn't seem too interested i her food.  She hadn't even drank her beverages. I was worried maybe she had pooped her pants.  She said she was fine.  I was sitting in Jacquie's place, but I moved beside mom.  I thought maybe she didn't know how to use her cutlery. She said she wasn't hungry.  She did try some Greek chicken, oven-baked potato and Italian mixed vegetables, and even her apple crisp, but she didn't eat much.  She used the fork a couple of times, but I had to break her potato and chicken apart.  I fed her a few pieces.  She ate her two pieces of orange and drank her apple juice, but I had to bring the apple juice to her attention.
After dinner, mom pushed Donna to the nurses' station.  I toileted mom.  Her diaper was clean.  I brushed her hair.  It wasn't tangled.  She was dressed properly with an undershirt.  I brushed her teeth, washed her face and applied some Vaseline to her cheeks.
Shanta wasn't at dinner today.  Apparently she has been in the hospital since Monday.
We played cards.  Chris was there.  Donna's vision is very bad or she just can't tell the difference between cards.  Mom can focus on one attribute like the number or suit.
After cards we left mom and Donna at the nurses' station.

Sunday 7 January 2018

Dirty toilet

Sunday, January 7, 2018
Mom, Donna and Edward were seated when I arrived.  Mom was playing with her beverages.  Donna was trying unsuccessfully to scold her.  We had ham, scalloped potatoes and peas.  Dessert was chocolate cream pie.  Yum!  Everyone enjoyed their meal.  Donna didn't get a dessert so we gave her mom's.
After dinner mom wheeled Donna to the nurses' station and I took mom to be toileted.  The toilet in her room had poop that wouldn't go down the drain so I asked an aide to get it cleaned.  He directed us to the washroom in the shower room, but that toilet was plugged and water shot up when I tried to flush it.  Yikes!  We used the usual washroom next door as I was originally planning to do.
I groomed mom.  Hair, teeth, face, etc.
We picked up Donna and went to play cards.  We played in the television room.  I had to ask Alan to put the volume down a bit.
Michael likes to feed the racoons.  He leaves bits of apple on the outside deck and then watches for them.  They usually come around 9 p.m.
I brought Donna back to the nurses' station and took mom back for her final pee.  The toilet was nice and clean.

Saturday 6 January 2018

Quarantine

Saturday, January 6, 2017
Mom was upset when I arrived.  Apparently she had just pooped her pants and had been changed.  She was wearing her pajamas.
A-wing is in quarantine.  Jacquie did not join us for dinner.
This flu is a lung flu.
We had Maryland chicken, mashed potatoes, beans and corn and a mixed fruit cobbler.  Yum!
After dinner mom wheeled Donna to the nurses' station.  Donna wanted a tissue, but there is no tissue for the residents so the aide gave us a napkin. I took mom back to the room to comb her hair, brush her teeth, wash her face, apply Vaseline, etc.
Then we picked up Donna and played card bingo with our usual group in the television room.  I asked Alan to join us but he preferred to watch the news.
Towards the end of the game, Donna said she had to go to the washroom so I took her.  Of course the aide was on a break.  I went back to the card game and we played two more games.
I went back to the room and Donna was being toileted.  Mom and I sat at the nurses' station.  We did some leg and arm exercises and counted.  I checked in on Donna periodically.  I decided to toilet mom one last time before I left.  Donna was being toileted so I took mom to the washroom next door. She had some skid marks on her diaper so I changed it for her and wiped her bum.  It was clean.  Mom insisted on walking me up to the nurses' station when I left.

Wednesday 3 January 2018

Joe joins us for card bingo

Wednesday, January 3, 2017
Baked chicken, rice, Italian veggies, and orange cake.  Mom ate everything.  Apparently she started with dessert.  After dinner I got mom to push Donna to the nurses' station.  I took mom back to the room to toilet her, brush her hair, brush her teeth and wash her face.  Her toothpaste cap is missing.
I tidied up mom's closet.  I found out that the purple diaper is for day and the green diaper is for night.  We looked briefly at mom's photobook and read briefly from the City Mouse and the Country Mouse.
We played card bingo.  Joe joined us today.  Chris joined us as well.  I had to take Donna midway to the toilet so Chris had to take our places.  He complained that his throat was beginning to hurt.
After cards I went back to the room to return the cards and get my jacket and bag.  Donna was being toileted.  Chris brought mom back to the room so I suggested we take her to sit with the gang at the nursing station.

Monday 1 January 2018

New Year's Day

Monday, January 1st, 2018
Mom, Donna, Jacquie and Edward were all seated at the dining table when I arrived.  Donna, Jacquie and Edward were served first and mom and I had to wait.  Mom was peeved.  She kept saying "something is missing."  I told her not to worry.  Our food was coming soon.
We had roast beef, gravy, mashed potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, carrots and cake.  Everything was delicious.  Mom enjoyed everything.  She didn't eat the cake.
Santos said he needed a Vick's.  Jacquie said that they couldn't buy them any more from the thrift store.
After dinner I changed mom's diaper, combed her hair, brushed her teeth, etc.
I noticed there were a lot of damp clothes in mom's closet.  I wonder if the dryer had broken down.
We played cards in the fish tank room.
