Mom pooped her pants again

Tuesday, June 26, 2018
Mom was busily consuming all her beverages again.  She drank both my milk and juices and she even drank her tea.
She was upset when I took Edward's apple juice away from her.  I was trying to move her chair over so I could sit beside her.  She would have none of that. Eventually, she forgot about the juice and let me move her.  She was served first and wasn't interested in eating.  I didn't force her.  After my food came, I gave her a small piece of my "Kentucky fried"  turkey cutlet.  She ate it.  She then began using her spoon and ate about half her food.  Hurray!  I took a banana and an apple juice for her for later.
I took her back to the room to toilet her and my worst fear came to pass.  She had pooped her diaper.  Luckily this time most of the poop stayed in her diaper.  Unfortunately, she took it upon herself to wipe up the poop and got some on her hands and wrists.  Luckily, I had been giving her lots of toilet paper to distract her so she didn't get too much poop on her hands.  She was still pooping and doing wet farts as I got her to sit on the toilet.  I got toilet paper and wiped her as best as I could.  Then I used towels soaked in warm water and wrung out to wipe her bum and private parts.  It was hard to get all the folds.  Her trousers were fine.  I had to remove her shoes to take her trousers off and pull up diapers off.  She was standing in her stocking feet.
I removed her shirt and underwear because a bit of poop got on her undershirt and there was some on her shirt wrists.  I changed her socks too.
I washed her hands and wrists.  I got antiseptic wipes to use on her care home wrist straps.
I combed her hair.  Then I took her to play card bingo.
I came back and disposed of the diaper, towels, etc.
I helped mom and Donna play card bingo.  They were both engaged.  Neither won anything.
After mom was scolding me because I was leaving the cards on the table.  I tried to explain that they weren't mine.  Finally she acquiesced and let me lead her away from the table.
I brought her back to her room for a pee.  She had drunk a lot of fluids at dinner.
I gave her the apple juice and banana from dinner.  She drank all the apple juice.  She insisted that I share the banana with her.  She seemed very happy and calm.
I took her back to sit with Donna and the rest of the girls.

Sunday 24 June 2018

Ethel comes for a visit

Sunday, June 24, 2018
They were doing arm exercises when I arrived.  After the activity, I took mom to the washroom, but nothing came out.  The aide told me that she had had a bowel movement at lunch.
I took mom back to the fish tank room to sit with Donna and Zorka.
I wonder if they drug the residents more on weekends.
Ethel came for a visit.  I wanted to take mom and Donna outside.  It turned out to be an ordeal.  The automatic door doesn't work.  Ethel had to open the door for me.  I had to back Donna's wheelchair outside and now there is a gate that separates the two courtyards.  Mom was reluctant to come.
We probably spent all but two minutes outside.
Donna was agreeable, but mom was uncooperative.
We went to sit down for coffee.  I bought some red bean buns.  We all ate our buns, but mom didn't eat hers.  I ripped off a small piece, but she wouldn't eat it.  I then put the small piece in her hand and she ate it.  She didn't drink her tea at all.  She only ate another small piece later, but I ate most of the bun.
Mom talked a lot, but she seemed to be expressing her anger about something.  I wonder if she needed to be toileted.  I asked her, but she said it wasn't necessary.  Of course, I can't go by what she says.
Weight class had started.  I wheeled Donna over and had a bit of difficulty coaxing mom.  Once mom saw what was going on, she was happy to participate.

Friday 22 June 2018

Sheila

Friday, June 22, 2018
Mom had already drunk all the beverages when I arrived.  I took her to the washroom because I didn't want a repeat of Wednesday.  The care aide told me that mom had her bowel movement at 4:30.  Hurray!
Mom ate about 1/3 of her meal.  She fed herself.  She ate some orange and spit out the fibrous bits.  She ate some ice cream.  She ate a piece of the crusted sole with tartar sauce.  She spit out a fibrous ball.
I took mom to the washroom after dinner for a pee, but nothing came out.
While she sat on the toilet, we went through her photo book.
I brushed her teeth, washed her face, etc.
It was supposed to be horse racing tonight, but as there were no volunteers, Ming changed to hitting the ball with a foam stick.
I labeled mom's new shoes and put them in her room.
There is a new guy.  He has a heart problem.  His mind is pretty good.  He's nissei.  His daughter's name is Sheila.
After the balloon activity I went to take mom to the toilet, but she refused to get out of her chair.

Wednesday 20 June 2018

Poop running down her leg

Wednesday, June 20, 2018
Mom was sitting at the table being fed by an aide.  She had drank most of the beverages:  her apple juice, my apple juice and some of her Boost.  Everyone had their meals except me.  Spaghetti with a red meat sauce.  It was good.  Caesar salad and garlic toast.  Lemon meringue pie.  Mom had pureed green and orange stuff.  Some mashed potatoes and some pureed brown stuff.  She was not happy.  After I was served my food, I tried to coax her but she would have none of it.  I just dug into my food and enjoyed it.  I tried to give her a taste of my garlic toast, but she wasn't interested.  I put some food on a spoon and put her hand on the spoon and then she fed herself.  I had to repeat this motion a few times and she eventually ate about a 1/3 of her food.  I got her drink one tiny container of cream.
I took Donna to the fish tank room.
Then I tried to get mom to get up, but she was reluctant.  Eventually I pushed her chair back and she came with me.  She was walking stiffly.  When we got to her room, I could smell poo, but I didn't know where it was coming from.  It was mom!
After cleaning the toilet seat with disinfectant and wiping it down with a towel, I pulled mom's pants down and sat her on the toilet seat.  She hardly had any poop on her diaper.  I was mostly running down her leg, on her trousers, and some even on her shoe.  Luckily I was able to calm mom down and keep her hands away from the poop.  I removed her diaper, the pants, the socks and shoes.  I got lots of towels and wiped her down.  I started with her legs first.  The fold between her stomach and her legs, etc.  Luckily I have a bad sense of smell.  There was a lot of very soft poop.  Apparently there was some poop in the hallway as well.  Near the nurses station I think.
I had mom sitting on the bed and was getting ready to put a pair of pants on her when Chris arrived.  He said they were cleaning poop from the floor.  It must have been mom.  I got her to put a pair of pants on mom and get her a new pair of shoes.  I cleaned up the mess as best as I could.  I put the poopie clothes and towels in the laundry hamper.  I wiped her shoes with the disinfectant cloth and it came off from her shoes.
Chris was so helpful, not.  Why don't you buy mom some slip ons?  I did, but she pooped on them.
We played cards with Zorka, Donna and Michael.  Zorka is so agreeable.  Mom was grouchy even though she won twice.  She didn't like Chris touching her cards.
After we played, I took mom back to the room.  She took a pee.  I got her to drink some of the Boost and eat some of the banana.  We went through her photo book.  Then, I took mom out to join Donna.  I put the banana in mom's hands and she continued to nibble at it.

Summer clothes

Monday, June 18, 2018
Mom was seated at the table as were Donna, Jacquie and Edward.  They had all been served their meals.  I pushed mom's chair over to Donna's side to make room for my chair.  I put the spoon in some food and then put her hand on the spoon.  She started to feed herself.  I felt happy.
We had pasta, salad and garlic toast.  Dessert was vanilla pudding.  Mom ate a little pudding.
After dinner, I took mom back to the room.  Her bum looked fine and she didn't grimace in pain.
I gave mom her Boost to drink.  I drank my tea.
I brought some summer clothes for mom because it has become very hot recently.  Mom was wearing a short sleeve cotton sweater and a cotton shirt.  I removed them and put on a short-sleeve cotton t-shirt.  She was happy.
She brushed her teeth albeit very briefly.  She swished and spit.
We went to join the balloon activity.  I played "war" and "go fish" with Michael.
After the activity I went to mom to get her to stand so I could toilet her.  She didn't want to get up.
I let her stay there.

Saturday 16 June 2018

Watermelon

Saturday, June 16, 2018
Mom was sitting with Donna and Edward had just arrived at the dining table.  I took mom away to toilet her.  Her diaper was mostly clean and she did a little pee.
We had pork roast with mushroom gravy, mashed potatoes and corn.  Mom had pureed pumpkin, mystery meat, mashed potatoes and gravy.  She was served first, but didn't want to eat.  She had drank all her beverages.  She had drank four creams and had filled the empty containers with milk.  I guess she was bored.  Donna was just rolling her eyes.
After we were served and started eating our meals, mom started feeding herself.  I was happy.  She ate most of the mystery meat and some pureed pumpkin.  I also got her to eat half her custard. I gave her a few orange sections to eat.  She liked them, but chewed on the fibrous bits for a long time.  She eventually swallowed everything with a chaser of custard and milk.
I took mom and Donna back to the room.  I toilet mom, brushed her teeth, wiped her face, etc.  She didn't complain about her bum hurting today.
We went to play card bingo.  Even though I had told Alan that we would be playing card bingo at 6:00, he took his mom to the dog park.  He brought her back about halfway through.  He said he had lost his phone and left.  He asked me to take Shanta back to her room after the game.
Michael won 4 times so he was very happy.  Mom was sometimes participating, sometimes not.
A Chinese lady from the kitchen gave me a piece of watermelon.  It wasn't that great, but I ate it.
A nurse tried to give mom some Tylenol, but she wouldn't have it.
I took mom back to the room and this time she did some poop.  I didn't notice until I went to wipe her bum.  I had her sit back on the toilet and she did a little more.  It was quite liquidy.  I changed her diaper too.  I brought her back to sit with Donna and then went back to dispose of the dirty diaper and towels.  When I got back, they were both having hot cocoa.

Poop under the fingernails

Wednesday, June 13, 2018

Mom’s Alzheimer’s is getting worse.
Last Monday when I toileted her she had a very dense, large ball of poop stuck in her sphincter.
She wanted to use her hands to dislodge it.  I kept putting toilet paper in her hands to distract her.
Finally it dropped.  I think she is constipated because of the Tylenol she gets 3 times a day.
I was told she may have arthritis.
Today at dinner, I noticed she had poop under her fingernails.
I took her to the nurses station.  I got some Q-tips to clean under her nails.  This is not the first time.  I soaked her fingers in dixie cups of warm soapy water, scraped under her finger nails with the stick of the Q tip and then used the cotton to clean up the loosened poop.
Apparently she gets up and walks around at night.  The doctor has put her on Trazodone 50 mg
Mom is being fed pureed food.  She doesn’t like it.  She will cry if any force is used.
After I cleaned mom up, I went back to the kitchen and asked for a banana.  I peeled it for her and she ate it.
I gave her some strawberries.  She pulled off the leaves and ate one.  One of them was large so she pulled it apart with her fingers.  I put a large one in her mouth and she was able to bite a piece off.
The other day she had forgotten how to brush her teeth.  I brushed her teeth and then gave her some water to rinse.  She drank the water.
Today she was able to brush her teeth and rinse.  I always give her a second brushing.
She is still friends with Donna.  They like to sit together.
I am thankful that mom is not alone.

Mom ate some dinner.  Larry was feeding her.  But I had to take her away because she had poop under her nails.

We played card bingo.  Zorka joined us.  Mom was agitated at first, but eventually she was able to participate.  She was trying to gather her cards instead of letting them lie. Chris played cards with us.  Then we took mom for a walk around the facility, took photos, etc.

Monday 11 June 2018

Mom is singing at the dinner table.

Monday, June 11, 2018
Mom is seated at the dining table with all her table mates.  She hasn't been served yet.
Pork cutlet and sauerkraut, mixed Italian veggies and a baked potato with sour cream and onion.  Vanilla pudding for dessert.  Mom has imbibed all her beverages.  She refuses to eat her pureed food.  I give am able to get her to eat one spoonful of pudding, one spoonful of my baked potato with sour cream, a tiny piece of breaded pork cutlet, and some banana.  She drinks a little of my milk.
Mom was singing a lot.
After dinner I take Donna to her room.  Mom refuses to come.  She is more amenable when I come to get her later.  I take the half-eaten banana with me.
She takes a heavy round poop.  It is stuck in her sphincter for the longest time.  She insists on using her fingers.  I keep making her hold toilet paper so she doesn't touch her bum.  When I wipe her bum their is a small round piece of poop still stuck to her bum.  Mom is much happier now.
I give mom the half eaten banana and she bites off pieces and eats it.  This is good.  She is hungry.
I take Donna to play with the balloons.  She is hesitant at first, but then joins the group.
I go and get mom.  She has eaten all the banana and has laid the peel on the dresser.
I take mom to join the balloon activity.
I play cards with Michael.  He was kind of pouty.  Because there were only the two of us, we played War.  He enjoyed it.  He even cheated.  He told me, but I knew.

Saturday 9 June 2018

Hiroko visits

Saturday, June 9, 2018
Mom was watching a movie when we arrived.  She was very happy to see Hiroko.  She was giddy with excitement.  Hiroko and mom went through her photo book.
Suddenly she started telling Hiroko to hurry so I thought maybe she had to use the toilet.
I toileted mom and she seemed more calm.
We went to have coffee.  It had already been served, but the little Chinese lady served us anyways.
I brought anpan and strawberries.  I gave Donna strawberries because she's on a diet.
Mom ate the strawberries and anpan.  I held the strawberry for mom to take a bite.  I gave mom bits of anpan.  She also drank her tea with some coaxing.  I hope I didn't ruin her dinner.
We took some photos.  Mom became agitated again so I took her for another pee, but nothing came out.  A hymn sing was starting so I took mom and Donna there to watch and Hiroko and I left.

Field Trip to SFU

Thursday, June 7, 2018
Mom was doing an arm activity when I arrived.  I went to her room to tidy up.
I couldn't find the cards.  I reported it at the nurses station and the person there told me to see the front information desk.  The front information desk told me to go to the nurses station.  Michael told me that he had the cards.
Then I took mom to the washroom.  Her diaper was clean and she just took a pee.
I combed her hair and wiped her face.
Mom hardly ate anything.  I gave her some of my pizza and some pineapple. I thought maybe she had to take a poop.  I was taking her back to the room when an aide scooped her up.  She wanted to make sure that mom was ready for her outing.
Mom just took a pee.  I went over mom's photo book with her.  She finished off the pureed beef barley soup and the Boost that I had brought with us from the dining room.
I gave mom a couple of pieces of orange and brushed her teeth.
I was hoping to hear the violin concert.  I didn't know about the outing to SFU.
We waited a long time in the hallway for the residents to be rounded up.
It took a long time to load the bus as well.
Mom wasn't happy about going.  She didn't want to get on the bus.  I had to coax her.  She was upset when she found out that I wasn't going.  I tried to reassure her.  She didn't even wave at my from the bus.  Michael waved.
I forgot my tablet so I had to go back to pick it up later in the evening.
Mom was sitting by the nurses station in a fluffy pink house coat.  She was wearing a pink night gown.  I took mom back to her room.  Donna was getting her diaper changed. I brushed mom's teeth.
She accepted a hug from me in her room, but she refused a hug when we took her out to the nurses station again.  Maybe I should have taken her back to the room.

Mom's ring

Monday, June 4, 2018
I got a phone call from St. Michael's this morning. Mom was found chewing her ring.  She has this beaded blue and white ring which actually looks really good on her.  Apparently she had been chewing it.  She must have been hungry.  Poor thing.  The nurse asked if it was okay if they discarded the ring.  Apparently she had a good appetite for breakfast.

Sunday 3 June 2018

Mom refuses to eat

Sunday, June 3, 2018
Haven't seen mom for more than a week.  I had a bad cold.
It looked like mom was scolding someone when I arrived at 4:00 p.m.  I think the woman had something under her nose.  Donna was sitting at the table too.  She was wearing a new dress.
I took mom back to her room and toileted her.  Her diaper looked relatively clean.  I trimmed her bangs and washed her face.
I found a pair of pants with mold growing on it.  Gross.  Lots of pee soaked clothing.  I put them all in the communal laundry hamper.
There were a few "new" nightgowns in mom's closet.
I gave mom a mandarin orange to peel and eat.  She put two sections in her mouth and realized it was too much.  After that she asked me to help her.  She spit out the fibrous bits.
We went over her photo book together.  I took mom for a little walk.  She was quite talkative.
We had ham and scalloped potatoes for dinner.  Mom was not interested in her dinner.  She was refusing to eat her food.  She told me to eat it.  She drank her apple juice, her Boost and ate her Jello dessert.  She barely touched her pureed food.  She asked me if I had children.  I told her that I was her daughter.  I don't know if she understood me.  She was way more talkative than usual today.  She was even joking about stealing my apple juice.
After dinner we went back to her room and I toileted her, brushed her teeth, etc.  Today she had no clue what to do with the toothbrush even after I demonstrated for her.
We played card bingo with the usual group.
Mom was unsure of herself and kept her hands under the table, but her competitiveness eventually got the better of her and she started asking if she could flip certain cards.  She could guess the suit but not the number.
After the card game everyone went to watch Titanic.  Shanta said she wanted to go to her room.
